Wow the harmonica at the end makes me very nostalgic... this and "Can't Buy Me Love" are two songs that I heard as a tiny tiny kid and have always stuck with me.
There is something so powerful about the moment where they sing "Like I love only you", it's almost like this profound moment of realisation and recognition that you love one person above all others, I can't quite explain it but that line really gets me
How to sing There's a place Beatles vocal harmony breakdown lesson
You get to see the breakdown of this incredible and awesome harmony. The beatles were in a league truly of their own, and its a frickin tricky harmony to say the least.
Haha 1:23 "I CARN'T SPEL" I love you so much Ringo!! XD
All my friends think I'm mad for being in love with 2 old and 2 dead lads from Liverpool, but it doesn't bother me one bit. They're amazing! And this is coming from a 13 year old. ;)
asdfghjklsdrifuherouhfewo this song makes me wanna punch a child because it just makes me so happy. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK I LOVE THIS SONG SO DAMN MUCH.
Lennon's harmonica was his hidden soul, and his art too defined that soul; I really believe the other Beatles were all catching up to him from '61-'66 as he led them creatively and you can hear it in Paul's and Ringo's memories. George absolutely adored John, and therein lies the genius.
@wwweddynu i agree with you 100%..in fact i was going to write the same thing before i saw your post..LENNON'S harmonica has a strange haunting sound to it..the song even sounds a bit off-key but still flows nicely..
@MinecraftMarines Are you kidding me? I don't know where you live, but at my high school there are tons of Beatles fans. I mean they are those Beatle fans that only know the mainstream songs or only wear the t-shirts to look cool, but still. I can't imagine someone getting bullied at my school for liking the Beatles. I actually see so many fans that I get sick of it sometimes. And I love the Beatles. If I didn't I wouldn't be listening to this song.
This is my favorite Beatles song. "There's a place where I can go, when I feel low, when I feel blue. And it's my mind, and there's no time when I'm alone." Resonates with me a lot.
I really love this song, I could say that it's my favourite one. Thanx and congratulations for this version,it's extended, isn't it? The voices sound like far...the guitar is awesome. Why don't you do the same with some other songs? "PLEASE,PLEASE US" A really goo job and how do you do it?
@artsyfartsme I have read four titles concerning the Beatles; "Shout", "The lives of John Lennon", "The Last Days of John Lennon" and "Magical Mystery Tour". I no longer have those books but the passage I refer to was in one of those, I am sorry I cannot give you the title and page number. You might want to Google this and see what you come up with a well. There has never been a group like the Beatles then and now and I believe it was not just due to chance.
@stonegrooved It's not "singing flat". John sings the lower harmony for the verses, Paul is singing the octave above John in the middle chorus, and Paul then sings harmony on the final chorus with John still on the melody line.
If you really want to dig and discover some of the theories of the Beatles success, it may shock all of you....I read that Lennon admitted at a young age while looking into the mirror, his face would distort and change and he heard voices...before the Beatles hit it big it was written Lennon asked this "voice" when he would "hit it big", the voice responded "soon"..Lennon himself admitted something came over him and would see the music and lyrics in his head....nonsense?...I dont' think so
The wild harmonica sets the tone of this fantastic early Beatle song...Lennon provides the main vocals....a clean and revolutionary sound the world had never heard before...once heard, you could never forget....in my opinion, that is what it was, their early work was like nothing ever recorded or heard and subsequently astounded the whole world.
Like everyone, I LOVED The Beatles; however, that having been said, this is one of my top five favorite Beatles' songs. Great music, great memories! Thanks for the post.
Years later I read McCartney said they were covered in ink because their suits where dyed purple before they left and when they played on stage the sweat made the ink run and it covered their hands and when they would scratch their faces it made their faces purple as well, and if you google "Savage young beatles" go to the first website that comes up, Look up August 1960 and you can see pictures of them on that day. Although its in black and white, you can see their hands are discolored
If you can believe it, my father saw these guys at the Indra club in the summer of 1960 when he was in the US Navy. They got shore leave in Hamburg and went down that Reeperbahn looking to get laid and heard Little Richard and went down into the club and there was nobody there, but they stayed for a beer and saw "these morons covered in purple ink" (as he put it) then they left because the beer was too much. Years later I read McCartney said they were covered in ink because their suits
@GGTarz Yeh, but john & paul worked out the harmonies themselves when they wrote this & all their early songs.George Martin wanted the Please please me album to sound like a gig at the cavern & just let them play their repetoire of originals & covers. It wasnt until later with Eleanor Rigby & Strawberry fields etc that Georges talents really showed through.
Fabulous song...you could clearly hear these guys had talent. The vocals are terrific really cutting through the mix. BTW This song was recorded in February '63....and not in '62...not that it really matters ;)
I read something about this song, about what is so brilliant about John--if that bears repeating--how he could capture musically and lyrically, his feelings. Listen to that forlorn harmonica. It's as if, the persona wants to get to that place, but really the sadness is always going to be there. John said himself about "Help," that he wasn't really aware of what he was doing until after writing the song. That was his incredible ability. So sad he's gone.
It's amazing how the 4 men changed the entire world. Truly amazing. I don't think they themselves know what they did even before we lost John and George. I did read where they didn't understand their popularity in the early years. They just went with the flow 'SO TO SPEAK'.
@msmomo2u Thanks. I work with an Iranian that was there in Iran back then and he told me they had the same effect in the middle east also. He said "it was just crazy they way everyone loved them."

No, todays music has little melody or distinctiveness. 50 years from now folks won't be able to hum or sing what melody?
