  • my father witnessed the french massacre at setif--he never forgave france--this film was the exception--a masterpiece is a masterpiece

  • those are some seriously pissed off swans

  • i'm proud to be French

  • swan attack at 1:45!!! LOL

  • @CarrieCatherin Man, that is EXTREMELY gutsy to keep lying there while those things are hissing. I live next to a river and NO ONE tests a swan's patience.

  • Wow! I think the best fantasy films were made during the 1940's!

  • thanks .

    -

love the fact that they managed to make us wish for the beast as beast. i am sure that is the case with adults watching this (including reportedly garbo ). no doubt some children will be disappointed at that twist(but they have the enjoyable disney)

  • excellent, magique, on retombe en enfance!!!

  • Wonderfull movie, but the translation is not quite accurate.

  • brava brva bravissima!

  • HOLY SHIT!!!! They flew away! Epic ending lol

  • What a masterpiece! This was phenomenal..a visual delight. Thanks for uploading!

  • I believe this ending is even more suger like then Disney's... But a beautiful movie, no doubt! Thanks so much for uploading! I'm glad I watched it.

  • Bravo!!!!!

  • no ending can match this one. film editing with reverse footage for its very end, when the beauty and the beast fly off the ground. the first time in motion pictures. directed by the great jean cocteau. this artist forever transforms film with his visions and new ideas.

  • Magnifique, merci.

  • Merci d'avoir offert ce film a nos yeux.

  • Just as lovely as the first time I saw it so many years ago. thank you for posting this masterpiece.

  • anyone reccomend any other movies similar visually?

  • @kath09is Cocteaus' Orphee (Orpheus) - as surreal / beautiful, yet different. If you can find his wild essay into surrealism, "Le Sange d'un Poete" (the blood of a poet) you are in for a wild treat - no plot, a series of utterly bizarre and surreal images.

  • thumbs up if the book beastly and alex flinn's refrence led you here

  • What a lovely movie! I was reading a book and it made a reference to this movie. I was curious enough to watch it. Im glad i did(: Btw, the ending somehow reminded me of disney's aladdin ending.. Flying off, i guess(;

  • @nncee29 That happened to me too! were you reading Beastly?

  • @aggured no, actually it was a Susan Wiggs' book.. it was about a month or two ago when i read it and it mentioned something about the french Beauty and the Beast not the Disney version and that's where my curiosity kicked in (:

  • I rewatched this today after listening to Ridley Scott's commentary on Legend and I have to say that Legend after he said what he wanted to do was create something of a companion to this film. Stylistically he really does do a wonderful job at paying homage to this.

  • l'envolée finale est sublimissime (09:10)

    quel film magnifique

  • Ca fait du bien de voir ça...

    Merci.

  • Wait she liked Avenant? o-o Wasn't he a bit of a creeper?

  • A loving look? Damn, I would have saved him a long time ago. Anyone that spoils me rotten will get all sorts of loving looks!

  • I saw this when I was a teen in maryland and cried why can't some of these americans have class like the French whom I aLWAYS LVOED SINCE i WAS 9 ANS Wonde rif I was French in a past life?

  • @oceansdream84 I'm English, and I've always thought the same thing. As I've said in my post below that I used to live in Saumur, France from the age of 5 to 8 which was when I first saw this film on French TV. I'm now 23, I'm still speaking French and I still spend an extensive part of the year in France with friends from my time living there.

It really is a special country, French statesmen from the renaissance and de Gaulle and onto Chirac have likened France herself to a guiding light.

  • I saw this when I was a teen in maryland and cried why can't some of these americans have class

  • Brilliant, wonderful, magical film.

  • Truly a gorgeous film and that ending? To die! Magnificent!

  • :*( that was beautyfull

  • I used to live in France when I was a child, and I remember watching this film in either 1997 or 1998 on television, I have never forgotten it.

  • super film, magnifique!

  • Just one thing...I never understood why he had no shoes on at the end. It made it look kinda dumb, especially because all the other things are so beautiful.

  • i love the enchanted castle and the treasure room. so magical. ----------Fly away to a castle in the sky xoxoxo

  • I have to say, I do somewhat prefer this ending to that of the Disney's version. Good metaphor and you actually get it more.

  • XD odd ending but I loved it

  • Wow the Beast didnt turn into a MAN but into SUPERMAN!!!!!!

  • Wow....Jean Cocteau was like the Miyazaki of his day....an absolute genius! I love this movie!!!!! :D

  • It's aged. I can think of a dozen things to bring the movie up to date. But genuine charm, like this movie had, is ageless

  • It's so weird how most of the parts are all smushed like that. Oh, well. Thanks for it anyways. Maybe this is a sign: I should buy the DVD. LOL.

  • Thanks so much for posting these! Haven't seen this movie in over 20 years and had forgotten so much--loved the chance to see it again.

  • This. Was. Amazing. I'm speechless.<3

  • I'm a costume designer so my computer is covered in drool right now. WOW

  • I'm a costume designer so my computer is coveeed in drool right now. WOW

  • am0123, thank you for uploading. thoroughly enjoyed every second of this

  • It's cool that her brother is friends with Justin Timberlake.

  • did you notice that Ludovic's hat fell off, when they rode away on Magnificent.

But now, in this scene, he has his hat back on again. Magic hats too. hmmm.

Thank-you to the person who posted this film. it is ALL quite BRILLIANT.

    And I simply LOVE it.

    5,000/5,000 or 1/1

    ACE film, from France.

  • am0123, thank you for uploading this movie.

  • All I want to do is chop those swans beaks off! They're scarier to me than Le Bete!

  • I don't get why everyone's complaining about it being smushed or something it looks fine to me

Movies weren't always made wide screen, taking movies not meant to be wide screen and doing so messes things up

  • The swan looks sneaky!

  • what the f*** is with those swans, they're all pissed off, super weird

  • Bravo!!!!!! i loved it....such a gud movie!!!!!!woooooooooooow.a must c film

  • to the english speaking people. This is a masterpiece. But one has to understand french language to really apprieciate.

  • Thanks for this wonderful film-fairy tale.ƸӜƷBella

  • Was this film translated differently for different countires? The version of this film I've seen alternate subtitles in alot of the scenes. For example here he asks if she's disappointed that he looks like what's his face and in the one I've seen he asks her if she minds. Gah! I wish I spoke french!

  • @eblovesdb I can only hear "êtes vous (something) que je resemble cet ami de votre frère"... But "to mind" and "to be disappointed" are kinda close to each other, sooo yea lol

  • @ijdeltuit ahhh ok thanks :) I was just curious

So I guess it's possible for people to translate/interpret what is being said differently?

Maybe I should take french lessons so I can do that for myself lol!

  • @ijdeltuit The same with the beast/human opposition; it's metaphor. A human can be more beastly than an animal, an animal can be more humane than a human.

  • lol they flew away at the end

  • @animefreak13ever lol yeah i couldn't help but chuckle at that

  • can someone explain the ending to me? so was avenant the beast the whole time or was it just a coincidence that the beast turned into him?

  • @kasumimoon1961 It is the metaphor throughout the film "don't judge a book by its cover", and "all that glistens is not gold".

The 'beautiful' man did not have the true heart, it was the 'ugly' beast who had the true heart.

To complete the lesson, the man became the beast he was inside, and the beast became the virtuous prince he was inside.

  • @sferemonk

    @sferemonk

but avenant transformed after he's been shot,

and then the beast transformed out of nowhere,

beast says that he transformed because of belle's love or something,

but... why does he look like avenant? Why not someone else? Is it because avenant is greedy and when he got shot a spell made him ugly? And since hes rotten, the spell passes his good looks to beast? And beast THOUGHT the reason hes human is BECAUSE of belle's love?

    Man im confused lol

  • @ijdeltuit The director chooses to make the changed beast look exactly like Avenant to make the point explicit.

The outwardly beautiful (Avenant) is ugly inside, and the outwardly ugly (Beast) is beautiful inside.

The beast becomes the beauty that is inside him. Avenant's appearance represents beauty.

Reflection, mirror image and metaphor are the language of fantasy, dreams and the subconscious.

  • "I'm not scared im just thinking"

    "Same thing"

    LMAO (:

  • So does 'what's his bucket' become the new beast who must find love and the will take the form of the next guy who breaks into the secret room when ironically at the same time the girl he loves tells him she loves him back?

  • oh no not the diabolical device... dumdumdum(dramatic music)!!

  • 5:58 "Give me back my Beast!"

    -Greta Garbo

  • @balrog13571 Ya got that right!!!! I think Garbo spoke what all of us were disappointed about the ending of Beauty and the Beast, and that is that everyone loved the Beast for who he was.....and in a way he was more beautiful as the Beast

  • Great movie but one thing...how come he has no shoes in the end? It looks dumb.

  • belle must have been heavy, all that dress material. I still can't believe avenant is the beast, were they related somehow or is just the way he looked before the curse?

  • I just saw this movie yesterday on tv, and I just had to watch it again! It's just different and fresh film than those of today's film. It's beautiful, thanks for uploading this.

  • very nice .thankyou for uploading

  • so where did they fly to exactly?

  • isn't it something awfully wrong with this ending? not wrong in the sense that would make it lesser art, but...

  • what a strange, lovely film XD

It almost makes me want to learn french.

  • This is the first time I am writing a comment on youtube. I first saw this swell movie when I was a little fellow in NY on t.v. 50 years go. It was dubbed in English. I would like to see this movie dubbed in Engilsh, colorized and maybe use Disneys music to enhance it even better. I think the Janus Film Society has it in English. Its a great movie. Thanks for making it available.

  • They barely show any deep and meaningfull movies like this anymore. Of course we have all heard that the interior is more important but it is still so nice to watch something like this where they make a big deal out of it anyway.

  • put the video in 480p and REFRESH! worked for me.

  • Is it just my computer, or is the video screen thinger long and skinny..?

If its just me, how do I fix it? D:

  • i loved this! i watched one part per day and looked foward to it...

  • How weird...I'm a male British student. I like tarentino and beer and heavy metal and junk food and all that sticking it to the man stuff. Just finished watching this for the first time. It is as of now, the greatest film Ive ever seen.

  • It truly is great isn't it?

  • IT REALLY IS. Just...timeless. For one thing, amazing how a film this old can avoid looking dated in its effects, when stuff like dune from the 80's just looks laughable now.

  • Completely agreed... Dune is laughable. Still, this is timeless. It is so cleverly constructed. Clearly this film was somebody's baby. Such a nice twist at the end too which appeals more to an adult audience. If only they made films like this these days! Everyone relies so heavily on CGI now.

  • Haha! That's so cute!

But yes... I didn't think I would like it much. I thought it might be too simple or a little clumsy with the scenes. But I love it. I absolutely adore it. It's so different from the Disney version... from any other version I've seen. Wonderful story, wonderful movie.

  • @nwcrouch This film has reached into the true you. Continue to embrace only goodness and beauty like this. Cast away all else. It is false.

  • @nwcrouch I'm impressed.

  • @nwcrouch Genuis in art can reach / touch anyone!

  • @nwcrouch This film is the key. Welcome to the kingdom.

  • Thank you for uploading this (-:

  • Thank You So much for Posting this movie. Loved it =)

  • Wow that was great! Thank you so very much!

  • I want a beast to turn into a man and fly ME away to his kingdom..lol just kidding.

This is a wonderful movie. The costumes are fabulous, too.

  • demon swans did anyone else notice them attacking the actor's hands lol

  • Dude, yeah. Swans are mean! Those things were hissing and trying to rip off Belle's hand when she was putting the glove on Beast. Haha! Creepy, demonic things.

  • They actually put string round the swans necks and pulled them to get that effect. :P Animal cruelty clearly wasn't quite in action that year.

  • It was AMAZING!!!! until he was wearing puffy shorts....those should be agaisnt the law lol

  • Hmmm... so I guess the next guy that falls into that building will turn into a beast and the beast will look like that guy>??? WHAT if a girl fell into the building? Would the soul of that guy look like a girl! LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL if that makes any sense...

  • And they lived hapilly ever after and had long children.

  • thank you so much! I used this for my English class. We have to watch old movies from a list and this was one of them, helped me a lot.

  • THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for posting. I LOVE this film that inspired my all-time favourite movie.

  • Could you upload part 9 again, please? Thank you ;)

  • thank you so much for uploading! your amazing! been looking for this all over

  • i watched this in french class and i loved it. :)

  • why are they all smushed now? do you have them posted normally?

  • it used to be normal, sorry i will try to upload it tomorrow but i've been really busy lately.

  • If you have a little "HQ" button on the bottom right of your youtube viewing frame. . .press it and it should work out fine

  • Other then the annoying music, this movie is really good. Though the heck did she get there before them on foot?

  • I quite enjoyed seeing a Belle who missed the Beast AS a Beast.

  • She wasn't on foot.

She used to magic glove and was transported to the palace instantly - thus arriving before the men got there.

  • Ah, THAT makes sense. Thank you.

  • I agree!! I really didn't like the music either. It would have been so much better with a different soundtrack.

  • lovely, very beautiful, the score is very very powerful. i love it!

  • this is lovely. old romantic movies r great

  • Evil swans! lol

  • Toujours magnétisante. Merci mille fois!

  • What a fantastic fairytale. The visuals were stunning; way ahead of their time. Thanks so much for posting!

  • ehh... what's with the vicious swans too? :-/

  • jean cocteau is a genius!

  • Thanks for posting! I've watched it twice, it's so good! I'd buy it, but it's $30 at Borders! :( Ah, well, maybe I'll buy it anyway! ;) Great film, thanks for posting!

  • The prince looked like the other guy because it is the same actor!!!!! Hes does the 2 parts!!!!!

  • he does ^^ his name is Jean Marais very well known actor

  • Considered to be one of the top films of the 20th century, this is indeed one of my favorites. Pity that Disney based that horrible thing on this, far superior, work. I simply cannot thank you enough for posting it here. It was wonderful to see it all again!

  • I love the Disney version. It wasn't based specifically on this, they were both based on the same fairy tale, so obviously they'd be the same in a lot of ways. The Disney version is one of my favorite movies, I like it more than this, but this is of course a brilliant film, especially considering when it was made. Thanks for posting! I'm seriously considering buying it! :)

  • JE L'AIME! The beast kinda grew on you. His fuzzy ears moved. tee hee!

  • Oooh. I loved how dark this was! What a twist in the tale. I can't say I loved it- after all I had been expecting Belle to say she'd marry him and we'd see a different guy- but nice twist all the same.

  • Wow, that was cool! Thanks for posting this, it was good. I'd heard a lot about it, and I finally got to see it! Thanks! :)

  • i was disappointed to see that the prince looked like the other guy...but i love this fairy tale just the same, thanx for posting this up

  • Merci!!!!!!

  • real magic, thankyou for allowing us to pluck this from ether!

  • Thanks for posting this! I've always loved this movie, even though the ending still doesn't sit right with me.

  • thank you for putting this lovely film up for everyone to watch. i kind of miss the furry beast too, as a prince he looked kind of untrustworthy
