  • Absolutely fantastic sound stage! It's just so natural and was presumably done with two Neumann condenser microphones. Apart from the artillery, the only thing that reveals the age of this recording is the tape hiss.

It may be worth uploading this again as YouTube have increased their bitrate from 128 to 152 KB/s AAC since this was uploaded.

  • Superb balance, depth and soundstage; that and Gieseking is superb and so is the orchestral part.

  • ich bin begeistert, wieder was dazu gelernt.

  • A wonderful performance and recording!

  • Just wonderful! A superb early Stereo recording and an equally superb performance!

  • 70 years ago it was possible to create a perfect sounding record... Superb audio quality of DVD- audio, SACD, ultra-high bit rates and other stuff looks like a total marketing BS after hearing this!

  • @Parkinson9999 you know they restore old recordings now.....

  • What is the exact recording date?

  • Großartige Aufnahme und außerdem eine technische Glanzleistung der damaligen

    Ingenieure und Techniker.

    Danke für das Hochladen!

  • Thank you so much for posting this remarkable document, and the sound is stunning. Does the First movement also survive - and if so may we have it please!

  • Fantastic!

  • The recording is amazing musically and in the first movement approx 16 minutes in there is VERY distinct gun fire and bomb noises - and that was the first movement of the concerto!

  • @Mkombozi do you have a link to find it?

  • What are you going to do as your national culture is crumbling but put out this kind of beauty?

  • According to Music & Arts and the German Radio Archive the recording was even made a little bit later, on 23 January 1945 (!).

At the same time, pianist Michael Raucheisen continued his Liedproject for the RRG (until March) with the finest singers of the period. In Leipzig, the Gewandhausorchester recorded also until mid-March 1945 (for example a beautiful Beethoven Symphony 6).

  • I'm simply amazed from the bravery of this orchestra...they play noverthless the air raid...fantastic and admirable|!!!

  • I cn hear the bombings at 2:30!

  • @salsadance999 It's just a quiet drum head sequence, evenly marking the rhythm of this piece. Romanticism? =)

  • Yes, and the sound!

  • I can't believe this was recorded in 1944. It sounds better than some CDs. Incredible.

  • It must've been a bit risky to attend concerts during air-raids- -i guess people just got used to it?-proof that it didn`t break morale as was the intention.

  • Amazing!

  • very fast

    beatiful
