He wanted to become a police officer, so he should have just stuck to that. Instead, he just sunk himself lower than the criminals he was passing judgement on. @iPsychopathic His mindset before and after (Of course not that long after) he found the deathnote did not change, the Deathnote mearly allowed him to put his ideals into action. The reason I talked about Capital punishment is because that is what he is really doing, of course it isnt right for him to be "Judge, Jury and Executioner" but its because of his resolution from when he first found the deathnote he said he would give up his soul and life to make the would a better place.

Anime: It is said that after Light dies, Near is offered the "Death Note Eraser" by Ryuk and Near erases L's name

Movie: Well, in movie 2 L finds out that Light is Kira, and so Light dies. But in "L. Change The World" L writes his name in the death note to avoid being killed by Rem. But he never knew his real name (birth name) so he wouldn't die :)
