I have Brother starter cartridge that came with 7860DW, how would I know how much toner to pour into cartridge?. If starter cartridge doesn't have flag gear how will printer know that it's empty?, If I just refill and put it back in shouldn't it work?.
@send2raj You can pour in 85g just like the regular cartridge. Note that the InkOwl bottles have exactly 85g in them, for convenience. The printer knows it's empty by counting the pages. You have to purchase and install the flag gear for the printer to accept your refilled cartridge. Check out our video on how to install for more details.
Folks, it is important not to over tighten the screws, because it will strip out the holes the plastic. Also, a good idea to replace the original screw back into the same hole. It will help prevent cross threading.
I was wondering if, it is ok to just reset the flag gear to use up the toner left in the cartridge? Once toner is the same type do you have to dump out old toner?
Where I used to work, we used to shake up "used toner" in "used bottle" and put it into toner bottle.
@Erneyman1 Yes, you can reset the flag gear to use up all the toner that is left, but this will only work sometimes.
Once the toner is the same type, you don't technically have to dump it out, but it's always advisable because your supplier might change manufacturer.
I'm not sure what you mean by "and put it into toner bottle", but if you're talking about potentially mixing some OEM Brother powder with refill toner, I would definitely advise against that!
@axt947 The problem with the old toner is not the age. It's that because of the slight differences between the new (compatible) powder and the original powder, having both of them mixed in the cartridge creates severe and unpredictable quality problems, known as toner contamination. For this reason, we have found it best to instruct our customers to empty out all the toner that is inside their cartridge before refilling.
@sumoexpertoennada ¿Ah, sí? ¡No sabía! ¿Cuántos gramos de toner ha puesto en la cartucha? Si entiendo correctamente, ¿ha utilizado el mismo engrane que se utiliza para las cartuchas TN-420?
Just did my first refill on a 450 and a 650 - eager to see how it works once the current cartridge gets low. I recommend getting extra fill caps. Mine was slightly difficult to get out - used pliers and damaged it - fortunately I had ordered 5 spares with my refill kit.
I just did a refill on the stock cartridge that I received with the printer and I also installed the new flag kit and all worked surprisingly well. I am so happy that all I spent was less than 20 bucks compared to 45 or more and for now on it will be $10 to refill several more times, great job guys!
@mrbing70 We recommend you perform the reset procedure again. Ensure that you really are putting it into the "Full" position. If this still doesn't work, do not hesistate to contact InkOwl's excellent technical support service.
@sinmagnion Since print quality is dependent on the drum, and Brother printers have separate drum units, you will be able to refill these cartridges 5-8 times or more with minimal degradation in quality.
Your kit supplies 85g of toner. The original TN-420 requires 65g and the TN-450 requires 90g. So your toner bottle is too much for one cartridge and too little for the other OEM cartridge. Will this cause a problem with overfilling of the TN-420 or short the number of pages printed from the new OEM TN-450 toner cartridge??
@hytek01 The TN-420 cartridge is identical to the TN-450 just with less toner put in by the OEM. So yes, the bottle will fit in a TN-420. Our kits are rated for 2600 pages per bottle at 5% page coverage although this will vary depending on what you are printing.
@orioncheung The TN-420 and TN-450 print exactly the same, just that the TN-450 will yield 2600 pages whereas the TN-420 will only yield 1200. The darkness and quality will be identical. Essentially, the TN-420 is intended for people who print very little. However, when either cartridge is refilled, you'll get your full 2600 pages.
@orioncheung That's a great price, but refilling is still and will always be much cheaper. In our videos, we always quote prices from the original manufacturer, as shown by the screenshot. Your information is still appreciated.
@InkOwldotcom This video is great too. I might get a refill later on. I order the HL-2270DW for $80(on sale) at Newegg. But one thing I don't get is 420 vs. 450. Yea, I know there is more powder is in the 450. But is the quality the same when I print?... Is it the same darkness when I do a regular print? Are does the 450 print in draft mode?.. This is my first time using a laser printer. So, many question. haha.

What's exactly is wrong with the old toner? It may have been in the printer for only a few weeks.

@sumoexpertoennada ¿Ah, sí? ¡No sabía! ¿Cuántos gramos de toner ha puesto en la cartucha? Si entiendo correctamente, ¿ha utilizado el mismo engrane que se utiliza para las cartuchas TN-420?

What I am trying to say is.. If the 420 prints darker, than the 450. I might stick with 420 toner.
