Boy do I remember this stand. 4 shows in 5 days. That was almost TOO much, and the last time they played Alpine. Every Summer, the high point was the trek to Alpine, some of our fondest memories of the 80's. Jerry's comeback in '87, people parked all over the golf course. There had to be 50,000 people jammed in there. I remember being under the pavilion and turning around during "Around and Around" and seeing people with their backs against that wall. And the heat of '88! What times those were!
That is probably the worst cover of any song by any group of human beings in the entire history of the human species, which means, about 200,000 years. And I love the Dead, so it's not that!
This was the second part of an encore on the last night of a 4 night run at Alpine Valley, it was quite special to me and many others at the time when it happend.
This band is incredible, they have countless of amazing live albums, but obviously they were stoned out of control here, because this is fucking rubbish.
@mzackim I think you're right. I just can't appreciate the original vibe, the spirit of the crowd, the atmosphere of the venue, AND the massive amounts of LSD that needed to be ingested to get though this song.
I can't believe all the arguing over bands ... all the ones mentioned here were great in their own ... it's like arguing over what's the best flavor ice cream.
@silentdreemz85 How did they sell out? They did a few movies, a couple of which are quite good, in fact a hard days night belongs on everyones must watch list. They had a cartoon which they had nothing to do with. It is important to remember that at the time, bands had little say in what their name was used for. If you must blame someone, blame the record company.
If you think that the beatles are the only four people who decided on what songs to play than you dont know what commercial music is all about. it wasnt just the four beatles who made the song....it was probably about 20 people.....A Company. That might seem weird but believe it.
@silentdreemz85 I would believe it if it were true. Their manager didnt want to release Hey Jude as a single, they did. They wrote the songs, they played the instruments, and they had more to do with production than any band of that time. It was only later that artists got control over all aspects of recording. So, yes, they had a manager, an engineer, and a producer. The 4 band members had complete creative control, if they did not like how the song was being produced they said how they want it
The beatles have sold more albums than ne other music group/band in history. And it all happened long before michael jackon was ever thought of. Michael jackson has nothing to do with the amount of albums the beatles sold.....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The dead doesnt and never has cared about how good they sound....thats why the beatles are the biggest sell out band of all time....they only cared about money there band was a corporation.....the dead never cared about any of that shit.....after all the beatles never did get along with eachother and they were supposed to be hippies???
What are you talking about? Sgt Peppers was hardly tailor made for the public? They made that album for themselves... and they made some of the best records of all time you cannot blame them for making money for being so fucking good?!
The GD were always about making music, not $. Beatles created to make $, ultimately huge cultural impact, changed 'pop' music/how people listened to music. Band ditched commercial viability early for introspection & to explore other genres of music. Pioneered psychedelic rock, opened doors to social/political awareness. Root of counter culture, first time music influenced people's views/lives, still does. I'm a longtime GD head, still give credit where due.
@bellablue108 Look, I love the Dead, If I had to pick one band to see live it would be them. The Beatles however were not about money, It was George Harrison who arranged the Concert for Bangladesh (a clear predecessor to all charity shows since) John who had the bed in for peace and made songs that were not commercially viable except for the fact that it was john lennon. They started out doing commercial songs, but better than everyone else. Then they "pioneered" EVERYTHING.
The beatles made songs because they wanted to see if they could do it. Hey Jude was over 6 minutes long and never before had songs that long been hits. The White Album? Are you serious, that is commercial? They were just geniuses, having hit songs and albums does not mean you are commercial, or in it for the money. It just means that you are good. Was touch of grey about money? It is one thing to laud the dead for being about the music, but dont diss the Beatles because you are ill informed
Lol!!! I dont think you understood me...there is a limit to the # of words here. My comment was NOT about the GD...I was giving all props to the Beatles. Actually they played this twice as an encore, this was the second and far better attempt...they all knew they couldn't really pull it off hence all the laughing and "ohhh goddd not again" at the beginning, but its just truly classic and beautiful in my opinion. On a side note, this was the last song the Dead played before i was born, so it will always be close to my heart.
I saw Bobby and Rob Wasserman do this tune when they toured with JGB in 90 or 91; it was a moving rendition. This tune was not one of the Dead's better choices for a cover, but is a great song.
usually i love the grateful dead, but this doesn't even sound like them to me. they are much better singers than that... its a pity though, such a great song.
i liked it

This shows how bad a band can be. Did they have one singer in the band ? Let alone someone that could play it on guitar?

Perhaps the worst cover of Blackbird I've heard. Am I supposed to take this seriously?

Love this tune...I think ABC played this on Monday Night Football after announcing Lennon's death.
Fnny, while I think the harmonies are pretty rough on this, I can easily imagine this being a Robert Hunter / Garcia collaboration.
