this is an actual thing that occurs in children. when they mispronounce sth, and someone repeats it exactly as the child said it, s/he will say that's not what s/he said. i.e. s/he recognizes how it sounds, but hasn't yet been able to say it correctly, yet still thinks s/he is saying it right.
