@belkeSMASH. The EEE PC 900 is wierd. Some brands of 2GB ram work and others dont. I understand Asus gimped the bios to only officially support 1GB to keep Intel happy, but I have found some brands of 2GB ram do actually work. If you go down the Linux route you should be able to use up to 3.5GB.

what is your system? EEE PC? Something Else?

There could be a number of things wrong with your computer which causes firefox to open slowly.

1st. Get SP2 for Vista, it rocks

2nd. Defragment your drive. download JkDefrag (just google it) works much better than the Vista defragger imho

3rd. Check what programs are running on startup and see if you really need them starting up.

4th. If you still don't like how slow things are, then go for it! Wipe Vista and use XP.

Get more RAM, will cost much less. Another 2GB RAM will cost around $20 while Windows XP will cost $128 at places they still sell it.

Vista is better than XP. I haven't seen much to tell me otherwise. I use Vista daily and its awesome. I used to use XP till I couldn't take its hanging, slowness and ability to get viruses for absolutely no reason. So no, Vista isn't a bad system. Its just been given bad publicity. Move on to Vista or wait for 7, but they are the same exact thing, with 7 adding a few new things and better performance.

Getting viruses has to do with the user, not the Operating System. I've never gotten a virus and I use a free anti-virus. It depends on how smart you are that determines if you get a virus.

Really. I've run XP since it came out and there were some early problems, but I've run for years and years and years without any problems with viruses or anything. I am a programmer so I keep closer tabs on running processes than most anyone else does, but a properly configured and maintained XP install is _rock_solid_. as was win 2000 pro/server.

Either that pc is a 32bit or it has a lot of info that slows down start-up. I got a 64bit pc and it runs in half the time with vista...people are afraid of change and won't let go of XP, but any how people WILL have to adapt to a new OS 'case XP will no longer be supported, if you like windows upgrade is out of the question, but windows 7 is getting a lot of buzz. We'll see how it turns out

The fact that computers struggle with Vista is not down to the power of the machine, but rather the fact that Vista is badly written bloatware.

Microsoft is busy adding "updates" to XP to make that slow as well, so when windows 7 comes out we can all marvel at how fast it is, microsoft hoping we forgot that XP used to be fast.

Anyway thats all history for me as I used Ubuntu Linux and Centos Linux now.

All I have to say, is that XP runs faster than vista in an environment with the same configuration (hardware/software), and I don't know of any 32 bit program that runs on vista and doesn't on xp. So for performance, I'll stay with XP, I'll be waiting for the new windows though, they say it will be "better"

EEEPCs are rugged devices ( well the SSD models). They are cheap, and easy to replace-ideal for a school environment, or a workplace. Moreso than many of the so-called rugged laptops which have one faliure point which most of the EEE's lack; the HDD.

Laptop choice is purely subjective so hence cut the slandering.

3D Mark 03 is not a game, its a graphical benchmarking stress test. Its not an optimised gaming code. You use the score to compare performance with other systems.

I know this, I have used it heaps before, but it is designed to benchmark the GAMING ability of a computer. And yes i would certainly expect more recent versions to run very lagy, but this is 03, almost anything can run 03 now days smoothly

I have had Vista on my laptop since September last year (when I bought it). So far it runs as fast as it did when I got it and I have never reinstalled the OS. I know I may be one of the "lucky" ones but still, it's not the worst OS ever. That'd be all the Mac OSes before 10. Vista also has more functionality than XP easily. Or are you one of the many who jumps on the band wagon without actual knowledge or experience?

Actually - I have very thurough knowledge of Vista and XP. See - I work with computers for a living. I can likely tell you more about the technical issues in vista than you'd EVER want to know. Vista will get you by if you are not a power user AT ALL. But if you use your PC for anything beyond browsing the web and email, you WILL eventually have issues with Vista. I have found vista to be less stable than XP when using SERIOUS video editing software and powerful Photoshop apps.

Unfortunately, Windows 7 is just an improved version of Vista. There isn't any new kernel written from the ground up. The system requirements remain the same as Vista.

Support for WinXP Home (for "nettops" and "netbooks" like EeePC) is being extended to 2010.

At the very least Windows 7 will be "slimmed" with binary-level backwards compatability being removed (think it uses over a gig of space atm). I can't imagine too many people use the compatability mode feature anyway.

On the plus side without a new kernel all current Vista programs and drivers will work instantly and there's also work going into improving boot times etc.

As for benchmarking, I think you should at least do startup times... but I don't have any alternative ideas.
