my dad had a bike just like this. made in 1978 and everything. I wonder where that thing is... I am defiantly going to get a bike when I move out. moving to arizona for college. I can't afford the 10mpg my 4runner gets but it will defiantly be a fun off roading truck in arizona. :)
My first bike was one of these. It had the first monoshock suspension available in the UK. Very quick if you took the spark arrester off. What a great bike it was!!!
Very nice bike. I have a soft spot for these old dual purpose Yamahas, specifically the DT series. I wanted to get a DT175 from a friend but I was just a couple of days late.
It didnt get a whole lot, maybe like 25mpg? Some people claim like 40, I find they are liars lols, but who knows. I mean it's a two stroke and it's 250cc, my moped was only 80cc but it got only 50mpg after modifications.
@ganjar420 have you re-jetted it? whats your plug look like when you pull it? it might be a good idea to check if the choke plunger is sealing properly. my 93 cr250 got 25 mpg full throttle most of the time. i cant imagine only getting 25 mpg on an enduro... i wouldnt even make it to school and back!
@rawimpact Hey. My 283lb 6speed NX250 gets 70mpg and tops out @ 90-95 depending on gearing. 2strokes fire fuel EVERY TIME they're at TDC. A 4stroke, every other. That's why the MPG is so bad and 2T's will never "be on top" again. 4T's GENERALLY have half the HP and twice the torque as a 2T, and vise versa.
2T's are fun, but not PRACTICAL. (sure that'll get me some thumbs down, but it's true)
oh trust me i know that i had a 85 kawasaki 700 ltd and i drove it a good 4,000 miles with bad valve clearances.
(ya i know but i had no choice it was my only transportation for about four months so i had no time to fix it) but ya when i finally did the valves wherent even bad so ya just thought id point it out to him
No two strokes don't have valves, most all of the bigger ones have petal type of valve, it's not really a valve though, it's a stiff peice of plastic or something. It flutters and kinda acts like a valve, but gives more power. The only moving parts inside a two-stroke engine are the crankshaft, the connecting rod and the piston.
However things are always changing, and there is now 2 stroke technology with smart valves for more usable low end. to me a 2stroke means no valves though
@evanparker yes,the mixture is actually sucked UNDER the piston and is pushed thru 'scavenging' ports to the pistons top. You'll see these ports if ya pull the cylinder off. That's why there's a cutaway on the intake side of the piston skirt. They fire every up-stroke. 4 strokes fire every other up-stroke.
@noblepuker yes noble, less moving parts reduces friction & weight (no valves/cams/camchain etc) which produces a lighter, faster machine....BUT,technology and emission laws have made the 2-str obsolete.4-str are now fast and light, and have linear power so even mom can ride'em.
Emission law for sure, and somewhat technology have replaced 2 strokes for the very most part. They are not 2x as powerful nowadays, but that vertical powerband and that huge horsepower increase in a matter of a few hundred rpms give you an adreniline rush unlike any 4 stroke. From 20% horsepower to 80% 90% horsepower in an instant. Raced out 4 strokes from the newest technology get close, but still not comparable for that quick thrill. For some this is bad, for me very good : )
@ganjar420 (BTW,420 makes riding extra fun) ..agreed.I own an old 91' KX250 that will anger new thumper owners. She's modded for 50+HP and weighs 225lbs or so.The power to weight ratio on my KX is like a F1 car.I'm not sure what the new thumpers weigh, but i doubt they're lighter than that...not to mention thumpers have to be 400cc or bigger to compete. If your into hill climbing,woods/relaxed riding, dislike shifting/clutching,and are to lazy to mix gas...a four stroke is your bike.
@ganjar420 just wait... 2 strokes will be on top again soon. they are developing 2 strokes with direct injection and a oiling system that supplys oil only where needed, and uses it all for lubrication - no blue smoke! the only reason 2 strokes have problems with emissions is the unburned fuel in the exaust. i know arctic cat is working on this and have made running prototypes that exceed the 2012 emissions standards, and did it without a catylatic converter!
That's in pretty nice shape, I've got the '76 175C Model. Doesn't even have 2,400 original miles on it yet. I have videos. My 175 runs pretty quick for something so old and small. I bet the 250 moves right along. I didn't see that you posted a video of you riding it yet, did I just miss it or is it not there?
Yah i sold it a while back and never did get to post a video of it being ridden : ( I really wanna get another 2 stroke enduro though in the future for sure.
Thx, the longer i keep it and the more i ride it, I don't think I wanna trade it at all. Pretty close to a title, just waiting on letter back from original title holder hopefully. If not I'm gonna send a certified letter to him, hopefully DMV will take that proof of delivery if he doesnt send back my plain jain letter, I forgot to include return postage even lol---
New piston rings and hone to come soon, maybe new piston and bore.
hang on to it man i had a 73 dt250 in realy good shape great bike liek u said pretty quick to i could smoke my budy on his 87 kx125 with dg exhaust boidsen reeds wiseco piston n bigger jets and i was also 100pnds heavier then he was cuz the bike.but all in all a great biek i traded it for a 1997 ninja 250 needs rebuild tho.i wish i never would have traded my old bike if i still had it i wouldnt have ever sold it:( hang on to that old bike man u will regret it if u sell it
