Many moons ago @ the Benelmans bar in the Carlyle Hotel in New York the resident pianist+vocalist Barbara was singing a Cole Porter song when Alice Faye and her escort entered the room from the hotel entrance. The pianist immediately ended her song and on her piano quietly slid into YOU'LL NEVER KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVED YOU.
Miss Faye's eyes lit up, and was by hand signal invited to join the pianist on the piano bench, to sing this song.
@johnrosa800 Actually, this song was introduced in "Hello, Frisco, Hello"in 1943, which came out about four years after "Rose of Washington Square". But you are right about it being a big hit.
@faye5515 She makes a film in 1945 with Dana Andrews, but hen argues with Darryl F Zanuck about giving some of her lines away to the female co-star in the film. The we never see Alice again until 1962. I guess when Alice got angry she was not going to reconcile here differences. I use to love her films.. They trimmed In Old Chicago by 20 minutes to 95 minutes.
@is1531 Even though that was the ultimate reason, Alice was getting tired of making movies anyway and wanted to devote her time to being a wife and mother. They tried to get her back several times over the years, but she said she was happier after leaving Fox. She was angry at first, but eventually got over it and felt her time as a star had ended.
I have her record in my collection when she was very young. So relaxing listening to it..classy. It's sad to think of the music now. Not even close....
Alice had great depth in her acting (and singing). When she fell for the wrong guy, you could actually believe it was for the right reasons. A beautiful, calm, curvaceous, talented and, yes, underrated star. She did great musicals at Fox, but really deserved to be at MGM.
You have GOT to see this song in context in "Hello, Frisco, Hello" from 1943. Alice Faye singing her devotion to John Payne's character whose heart has yet to open up is one of the great romantic moments in movies.
It was in the 1970's at the Carlyle Hotel cafe in New York when one evening, unnnounced, entered Alice Faye. The pianist quickly changed her tune to YOU'LL NEVER KNOW HO W MUCH I MUCH I MISSED YOU, patted the piano bench beside her inviting Miss Faye to join her at the piano; then MAGIC...Alice Faye quietly purrred the song that belongs to her alone and brought everyone to their feet.. WOW!!

Friends and I have tried to describe Alice Faye's extraordinary voice. I suggested her voice was like flannel. My uncle suggested satin. The best was a friend's suggestion of: liquid caramel.
I love this song--the sentiment of it, the vulnerable words and beautiful melody--- sung in a tender, intimate way by Ms. Faye. It won the Oscar for best song of 1943, by the way. The song really spoke to all American GI's who were away from their sweethearts in a horrendous war. I love Ms. Faye.
@meemaw9534 I'm so sorry. My dear Dad loved this song--and now he's gone. Lets remember our loved ones and comfort each other by listening here--remembering them!
@nikiichan This particular version of the song is from a cameo appearance in "Four Jills in a Jeep" (1944). But it was also featured heavily in another one of her movies, "Hello, Frisco, Hello" (1943).
My nana loved her and all her films, tin pan alley, weekend in havana and the gangs all here, were her fav's she made me obsessed as well when i was a boy, im 21 now and becoming obsessed all over again, such an underrated talent, she could have been so much bigger!
One thing I've noticed, that nobody has mentioned. Alice had a great expressive face that could instantly convey her emotions in a scene or musical number.
You'll never know is one of the greatest songs of all time and your'e right nobody knows it was hers!!! She is amazing! After I saw her for the first time I bought all of her movies and I have an autograpg pic of her!! I'm a little obsessed lol. She is so present in the moment. Her singing is so pure and real. thats what puts her above everyone else!
not underrated by those who love great music and great singers. she was terrific. the first time i saw her in a movie, i was almost blown out of my seat. amazing.
@sherwoodbreedrough Very true. The only problem is there are so many people who don't know she is. "You'll Never Know" should cement her status alone, but not many people know it's her song. I just wish more people appreciated her talent and that of other celebrities from her era.
Wow, sensatonal....great music, great voice, and oh, yes.....great looks...hard combination to beat. No stars like this today...Too many Lohans, Hiltons, etc.etc.etc. who have absolutely no talent and only minimal looks.
Alice Faye personified all the necessary qualities one needs to be called a super star; in her time.
