  • Alice Faye personified all the necessary qualities one needs to be called a super star; in her time.

  • Many moons ago @ the Benelmans bar in the Carlyle Hotel in New York the resident pianist+vocalist Barbara was singing a Cole Porter song when Alice Faye and her escort entered the room from the hotel entrance. The pianist immediately ended her song and on her piano quietly slid into YOU'LL NEVER KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVED YOU.

Miss Faye's eyes lit up, and was by hand signal invited to join the pianist on the piano bench, to sing this song.

Eyes watered, never to be forgotten evening.

  • Beautiful performance....Love this song, the lyrics and the voice...Beautiful woman!

  • this song was a big hit in "ROSE OF WASHINGTON SQUARE"

  • @johnrosa800 Actually, this song was introduced in "Hello, Frisco, Hello"in 1943, which came out about four years after "Rose of Washington Square". But you are right about it being a big hit.

  • @faye5515 yes thats right sorry, i was mixed up with the other tune about heaven, I NEVER KNEW

  • @faye5515 yes thats right sorry, i was mixed up with the other tune about heaven, I NEVER KNEW- Youll never know was the real big hit of hers

  • @johnrosa800 Yeah, they are both very beautiful songs, as every song is by Alice. I'll see if maybe I can post that one too.

  • @faye5515 She makes a film in 1945 with Dana Andrews, but hen argues with Darryl F Zanuck about giving some of her lines away to the female co-star in the film. The we never see Alice again until 1962. I guess when Alice got angry she was not going to reconcile here differences. I use to love her films.. They trimmed In Old Chicago by 20 minutes to 95 minutes.

  • @is1531 Even though that was the ultimate reason, Alice was getting tired of making movies anyway and wanted to devote her time to being a wife and mother. They tried to get her back several times over the years, but she said she was happier after leaving Fox. She was angry at first, but eventually got over it and felt her time as a star had ended.

  • I believe that this is what was called her "Torch Song".

  • I have her record in my collection when she was very young. So relaxing listening to it..classy. It's sad to think of the music now. Not even close....

  • They don't make them like this anymore.

  • Alice had great depth in her acting (and singing). When she fell for the wrong guy, you could actually believe it was for the right reasons. A beautiful, calm, curvaceous, talented and, yes, underrated star. She did great musicals at Fox, but really deserved to be at MGM.

  • Alice Faye OWNS this song. Many, many people have recorded it...but it all belongs to the beautiful ALICE FAYE.

  • My mom used to sing this to me when i was a baby/kid to get me to sleep.

  • You have GOT to see this song in context in "Hello, Frisco, Hello" from 1943. Alice Faye singing her devotion to John Payne's character whose heart has yet to open up is one of the great romantic moments in movies.

  • tHANK YOU for sending this amazingly beautiful video. I love the song and the singer she had such a lovely lovely voice.

  • song poped into my head this moring and its been stuck there all day.

  • thanks for this very nice

  • I love her voice, so clear, rich and deep. Back then people knew how to sing!

  • Thanks for this gorgeous video of a true super-star!

  • It was in the 1970's at the Carlyle Hotel cafe in New York when one evening, unnnounced, entered Alice Faye. The pianist quickly changed her tune to YOU'LL NEVER KNOW HO W MUCH I MUCH I MISSED YOU, patted the piano bench beside her inviting Miss Faye to join her at the piano; then MAGIC...Alice Faye quietly purrred the song that belongs to her alone and brought everyone to their feet.. WOW!!

  • Friends and I have tried to describe Alice Faye's extraordinary voice. I suggested her voice was like flannel. My uncle suggested satin. The best was a friend's suggestion of: liquid caramel.

  • I adore this song, and I loved Alice Faye in anything she did. She was so beautiful and so talented!

  • I feel like I heard this song in an animated movie...but maybe I'm crazy XD I still like the song.

  • This song was featured memorably in the film alice doesnt live here anymore

  • I loved Alice in her radio show she was a wonderful actress!

  • Harry Warren wrote so many beautiful songs--most unsung song composer.

  • I love this song--the sentiment of it, the vulnerable words and beautiful melody--- sung in a tender, intimate way by Ms. Faye. It won the Oscar for best song of 1943, by the way. The song really spoke to all American GI's who were away from their sweethearts in a horrendous war. I love Ms. Faye.

  • This song was my deceased husband and my favorite song. I still get tears when I hear it

  • @meemaw9534 I'm so sorry. My dear Dad loved this song--and now he's gone. Lets remember our loved ones and comfort each other by listening here--remembering them!

  • heard this on big love :)

  • what movie is this from? I should get my hands on it and check it out, her voice is so calming I am loving it :)

  • @nikiichan This particular version of the song is from a cameo appearance in "Four Jills in a Jeep" (1944). But it was also featured heavily in another one of her movies, "Hello, Frisco, Hello" (1943).

  • She was married to the popular band leader and comedian Phil Harris. Part of his schtick was that Alice henpecked him.

  • thanks- a beautiful classy talented lady. You did a nice job on this- and its such a wonderful old tune, and very appropriate- lovely video.

    -Bill

  • such a beautiful melody! my ma used to sing me and my brothers to sleep with this!

  • Excellent post, a great singer, and a beautiful song!

  • A great song, very well performed.

  • My nana loved her and all her films, tin pan alley, weekend in havana and the gangs all here, were her fav's she made me obsessed as well when i was a boy, im 21 now and becoming obsessed all over again, such an underrated talent, she could have been so much bigger!

  • thank you for posting this video. it means more to me than "you'll never know". peace to you.

  • Beautiful, my Grandma is a year older than Betty, & she is still around to talk about this wonderful era.

  • wow! love this

  • thanks for posting. She made this song famous and nobody knows who she is!!!!

  • She made this song famous and nobody knows who she is!!!!!!!!!!!!! she is amazing!!!! Thanks so much for posting this. There needs to be more of her

  • One thing I've noticed, that nobody has mentioned. Alice had a great expressive face that could instantly convey her emotions in a scene or musical number.

  • Alice Faye was a fantastic voice and this was the song that drove it home for me. Vera Lynn's version comes in second.

  • my granda who is not here, loved her, I know all the words

  • my granda loved her

  • You'll never know is one of the greatest songs of all time and your'e right nobody knows it was hers!!! She is amazing! After I saw her for the first time I bought all of her movies and I have an autograpg pic of her!! I'm a little obsessed lol. She is so present in the moment. Her singing is so pure and real. thats what puts her above everyone else!

  • not underrated by those who love great music and great singers. she was terrific. the first time i saw her in a movie, i was almost blown out of my seat. amazing.

  • @sherwoodbreedrough Very true. The only problem is there are so many people who don't know she is. "You'll Never Know" should cement her status alone, but not many people know it's her song. I just wish more people appreciated her talent and that of other celebrities from her era.

  • She was lovely

  • Wow, sensatonal....great music, great voice, and oh, yes.....great looks...hard combination to beat. No stars like this today...Too many Lohans, Hiltons, etc.etc.etc. who have absolutely no talent and only minimal looks.

  • Beautiful!

No one has a voice like that these days........

  • THERE never be another one like her.SHE sure deserved more

    than she got.

  • DunDeagh,

Alice Faye was the top box office star in 1940, ahead of Bette Davis & Marlene Deitrich!!

  • @SoulSister66,

    I totally agree with you.

  • My Aunt 0:>).....Songwriters like Berlin & Warren wrote songs specifically for her to sing.

  • Lovely tribute.

  • She's sooo pretty

  • I love her voice it is so clear, deep and smooth, why can't people learn how to sing anymore???

  • Wonderful original version featured in a latter movie " Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore"- really appreciate for your efforts in uploading it.

  • i heard lois griffin sing this on family guy and thought it was just the most beautiful song i EVER heard :D so beautiful *_*

  • lol, that's why I looked this song up! XD

  • What in heaven's name did she see in Phil Harris?

  • @cheefoo36 Maybe he made her laugh--he was a funny guy as you know (Jack Benny radio show, etc)

  • i adore alice faye.

  • @ricmarc one of my favs, just found Hello Frisco Hello on DVD
