You know, I've found that having the triple tech "Twister" with these 3 characters and just using it repeatedly usually takes this guy out pretty quickly.

I remember when I first fought this guy. I was like, ok joke battle, I just have to die right? I was shocked, but it only took me a few more times to figure out how to beat him. :)

If you use the Rubbles for Tech grinding you can get Luminaire before Ocean Palace

Yeah, you have to go and leave the mountain to restore them though. Plus, they lock your techniques, and they're really hard to hit. The 100 tech points is worth it though.

My first time through, I think Crono had dark and fire absorbing armor... the fight took 40 minutes since I was under-leveled, but he couldn't hurt me. Good thing you didn't go that route Garland :)

no such armor, but there are armers that will absorb one but not both.

but i don't think it would be possible since you would have to grind the crap out of your characters to get the money for items and and exp to be powerful enough

Chrono Trigger doesn't seem like a good game to play challenges in... The low level game is easily the best thing you could do, and though you could solo with any given character the beauty of this game lies in the double and triple techs you could execute.

I'd recommend trying out a speed run without resets.
