how does this compare to the spyder with manual tranny? even though its easier to live with does it lack the fun from the spyder?.... honestly i'm just interested in how u felt about this paddle shift tranny compared to the manual one
400HP is actually the base model. I've visited the factory a couple of weeks ago and they said you can order the engine in different power-stages. From stage 1 (400HP) to stage 4 (620HP).
@CardiffCentral the steering wheel is because of the us regulations where all cars should have airbags. in europe you'll get the original steering wheel
This car actually does have ABS, but no TCS or stability control. They did this to make it more of a drivers car (it's not like you would drive this in the rain or snow anyway)
Great looking cars (back is not that good looking do) But i see one thing that is bad on the steering/shifting. The shifts at the steering dont move with the steering wheel this means when your in a turn or something you cannot shift that way in a fast order because you have to move your hand... That is bad (A)
400 hp... at first I thought that was nothing in comparison to the 550hp-range Italian sportscars, but then I realized in the real world, you don't need more than 400... And for the rest the Spyker is excellent.
it also weighs less than the vast majority of cars that have that kind of horsepower. i don't doubt the spyker has fantastic performance. I think it was mostly designed to be stylish though....
Paddle shift... great. Making it 'easier to drive' for the increasingly incapable North American driver/market that just loves gimmicky shit and has no understanding as to what the 'thrill of driving' is really about. Spyker should have offered a manual-only for the Aileron, thereby weeding out all of the inevitable posers that will buy this car, purely to flaunt their gold watches and tasteless, manicured facial hair. You don't DRIVE a paddle-shift car... you just steer and brake.
@Blakeoffire So if you don't drive it. Does it have some sort of AI embedded in it? Or is it that you sir are clearly ignorant and have no real insight into anything relevant in the world, except for a fucking YouTube video
Your asking if I'm ignorant..? And questioning if I have no real insight as to what's relevant in the world.. just because I'm addressing the obvious cultural shift in the type of drivers that are buying these cars..?!? Wake up, please. There's a very clear reason why the new Ferrari 458 Italia is paddle-shift-only with no manual option available anymore. Ferrari even admits it openly. The Spyker Aileron is phenomenal, but you remove a crucial interaction with any car once you plop in a paddle.
the ferrari 458 italia is much faster with a dual clutch unit than it ever would have been with a manual. Ferrari didn't feel the need to reengineer anything for the car just to make it slower, when they designed the entire powertrain from the ground up to incorporate the DCT.
Well yes, we all know that any dual clutch system will be slightly faster (not faster overall though... really now) at shifting cogs than a human rowing a manual gearbox...that's a no brainer. My point is that Ferrari chose to not include a manual option because 90% of the people that buy Ferraris nowadays don't really know how-to, nor care to learn how-to drive a manual. And they'll never understand that you're losing out on vital interactions and feedback btwn yourself and the car w/paddles.
um.... not faster overall? what are you talking about? faster and more consistent gearshifts = faster overall. Ferrari chose not to include the manual option because it was unneccessary. you're either being needlessly pessimistic, or just playing devil's advocate, but there is nothing "vital" about the feedback of a clutch and a gearshift lever. Its more involvement, and a lot of people think its more fun, but its not "vital". what does that even mean?
Maybe .05sec faster on a racetrack/ straight-line perhaps... but in the real world..? Hardly a big enough difference. And why do you think Ferrari deemed a manual 'unneccessary'..? Market research plays a very large part in what goes into cars these days. Learn that please.. Nothing vital is lost without a proper clutch..?? Are you even aware of the 'thrill of driving'..? and do you understand 'vehicle interaction'?..and what is lost when you throw in an automatic (ie:paddle) transmission.?
back to back comparisons have shown most cars equipped with DSGs to lap full seconds faster than their manual counterparts, and get to 60 and through the 1/4 mile full tenths, to almost full seconds faster. Ferrari deemed the manual unneccessary for the same reason they deemed cast iron brakes to be unneccessary. It dilutes the car's performance.
Yes, but you're just reading the company-line/hype. Of course they're going to emphasize those figures in justifying their actions to the general public. Thing is, do you spend your entire driving life doing 0-60 sprints and lapping your local race track..? No, you don't. And neither do 95% of those that buy Ferraris nowadays. There's only two reasons why you'd opt for paddle-shift in a road car. 1. It's easier to drive, gimmicky, and makes you look good..or 2. You don't know how to drive manual
I think what he's trying to say is that there are two reasons for buying a paddle shift car:
1) It is the top of the technology pyramid and gives the car a more "exotic feel"
2) They don't want to, or don't know how to drive a manual gearbox.
The sad part is that most of the drivers who buy paddle shift cars have no intention of ever running a timed lap in the car, where the precious tenths would really make a difference, and that even though it's not as fast, stick cars are just more fun.
I have driven many Ferrari F430's, including the Scuderia, and the best one I've ever piloted was a 430 Spider with a stick, and hearing MY OWN throttle blips out the back while feeling the click-clack of a gated shifter on a downshift is much, much much more satisfying than the quarter second you've saved because you only had to hit a paddle.
Actually many people who own a paddle shift automatics usually don't use them. This is especially true with non-exotics like a Mercedes or Audi sedan. This is also the reason Maserati was prompted to offer an "Automatic" next to a paddle shift that can already be driven in just auto mode.
@TheSmokingTire I completely agree. The feeling of stabbing the clutch and throwing back the stick is much more fun. Plus it sounds better than an automatic for example which sounds all creamy. Just my two cents.
sorry let me correct this before i get stereotyped as a dumbass @Blakeoffire damn what crawled up your ass. all i hear about is how stereotypical Americans, or i guess North Americans are, yet you dropped a big one right there. kinda seems to me that maybe all of these people accusing are just hypocrites; judging by these kind of comments. however, i'll give the rest of the world the benefit of the doubt and stand that YOU'RE just a total jackass.
@rs200000000000 Don't know where you're getting Aston Martin from. Definitely an Audi/Lamborghini wheel considering their current relationship with Audi.
when you're only given 45 minutes with a car, and you only have one camera to work with, 4 minutes of usable good footage is really a lot. I wish it were longer, but sometimes we gotta work with what we can get.
WTF when did you guys mention you weren't G419 anymore its not even on your page!!!!!!!
You didn't put it on fast lane daily nothing I just got to woundering if you guys canceled or something and started finding people leaving comments on your old videos that your "the smoking tire"
Garage419 and all the rights to it belong to Next New Networks, which we are no longer a part of. Because we are (finally) independent of them, we are not allowed to promote our shows neither through G419's channel, nor Fast Lane Daily's. We have to start over, and hope our fans find us by chance. But I'm glad you found us, and you can continue to find us here.
As a car, it seems really good. The interior reminds me of a Veyron with all the aluminum. I hate the exterior styling, though. When looking directly at the front, it looks like a Dodge Neon, and the back is just too complicated to be taken seriously.
Now there is a work of art! Dutch engineering, me thinks!! Although Clarkson was right about the grill looking like a fish!! That engine sound is gorgeous!
You'd think that a car inspired by turbines would have a couple turbochargers strapped to the V8, instead of an off-the-shelf naturally aspirated Audi power plant. On another note, the paddle shifters seem awfully unresponsive. For the high price tag, Spyker should not be offered a ZF slushbox as an option. Guess I'll just have to opt for the 6-speed manual when I order mine! (yeah, right...) ;)
A big 2nd. Music is fine for the introduction and credits, but having the same repetitive music playing throughout the entire video is tormenting when all you want to hear is the roar of the engine and Matt's commentary.
Again, we only had 45 minutes with the car, which means we didn't have enough time to put a mic on the exhaust and really get the sound in. We work with what we have, and sometimes it's still not enough. Hopefully we will get the car for a few days when they have production versions and we can really take the time to get that sound right. But with 2 people, 1 camera, and 45 min, it's simply not possible to get everything we want.
I understand time constraints, and the music that is being selected sounds good, but you don't have to mask the lack of car audio with background music. Matt's voice does that well enough, amirite?
Matt great revieuw of a nice Netherlands product!. I'm proud of it!
Saw about 3 Spykers in my life, one at an event for sick kids, 2 on the road i guess.
Great cars and absolutly more exclusive then most Ferrari's and Lamborgini's. Only prob imo is the lack of pure power (@ 400hp a new Carrere S isnt that much slower) . I know they offer compressor version, but never really saw one on pictures or anyting.
I've only seen one Spyker and it was in a Maserati dealership. It was beautiful in orange and gunmetal gray because it was the very limited LM85 Edition C8. I was riding my bike going by the dealer and almost wrecked when I saw it and recognoized what it was.
we only had 45 minutes with the car and 1 camera, so we didn't have time to mic up the engine, shoot lots of b-roll, and do all the things we normally do. in fact, if I hadn't done the entire two monologues in one take each, it would be even less. It's very hard to get seat time in supercars, so we work with what we can get. This is the fourth Spyker i've driven.
Beautiful and unique. Amazing craftsmanship throughout! It's definitely worth the price - I'm a big sucker for leather, aluminum and chrome. People will all know it's worth something without knowing what it is.
I wish I could see the engine bay. Spyker engine bays have been nothing short of amazing. The Cadillac Sixteen concept's engine bay is like no other.
Matt, fantastic work. I have never even seen a review on the Aileron, hell i didnt even know they made them! But seriously, fantastic shots, fantastic music, and fantastic commentary.
This truly is what you guys have been striving for for so long.
There's good news, quite a few companies make blower kits for the Spyker. I know MTM, APR, and PES Tuning all make kits that bump power up to around 550
Unfortunately, we take what we can get, and we only had about 40 minutes total with the car, and one camera. So this was a short one, but what can you do?
now that you mention it, I forgot to talk about the fact that next year, the aileron will be getting a new engine that makes approximately 30% more horsepower than the current engine, as a result of Audi discontinuing that engine entirely. The performance should be stellar.
Wait til they put the engine from the ZR1 in this badboy. SHHHHH you didn't hear that from me

Matt u lucky SOB, how many time u drove a spyker?!
Stop using music this is a car show more engine music please!!
gt46c 2 years ago
we only had 45 minutes with the car and 1 camera, so we didn't have time to mic up the engine, shoot lots of b-roll, and do all the things we normally do. in fact, if I hadn't done the entire two monologues in one take each, it would be even less. It's very hard to get seat time in supercars, so we work with what we can get. This is the fourth Spyker i've driven.

is JF not on the team now?
brettvette 2 years ago
JF helps with some episodes, but he lives in NY and we are in LA
TheSmokingTire 2 years ago
this explains why Derek D still uses that JF/Audi geek voice...

WorldofLuxury 2 years ago
honestly, the engine bay isn't all that impressive, since it's essentially just an audi V8 like the RS4's.
TheSmokingTire 2 years ago
oh aha That's too bad.

Love the show!

Matt, fantastic work. I have never even seen a review on the Aileron, hell i didnt even know they made them! But seriously, fantastic shots, fantastic music, and fantastic commentary.
This truly is what you guys have been striving for for so long.
Jambajuicer432 2 years ago
Thanks, I wish it could have been a little bit longer, but we only had the car for a very short time.

TechWithLukasz 2 years ago
There's no more Garage419. This is our new and finally independent show.
TheSmokingTire 2 years ago

teamsleepnine 2 years ago
no, this is a totally new venture for these guys. they're their own production company now.
Elmo187 2 years ago
No, we left Next New Networks to make our own show.
TheSmokingTire 2 years ago
Can you leave a comment or video response on tomorrow's FLD explaining this?
Everybody's looking for G419 but doesn't know about the new show.
Anyway, I love the show
You're awesome!

Great review, it sucks you could have more time with the car. You used your time well =]

This is definitely one of your best reviews. Much cleaner and more refined feeling.

There's good news, quite a few companies make blower kits for the Spyker. I know MTM, APR, and PES Tuning all make kits that bump power up to around 550

Another good vid - a little short, would have liked to have seen a little more footage of the car, otherwise great stuff guys!
davebos582 2 years ago
Unfortunately, we take what we can get, and we only had about 40 minutes total with the car, and one camera. So this was a short one, but what can you do?
TheSmokingTire 2 years ago
Of course, work with what you got - besides, limited footage makes the car even more exclusive! Thanks for the response.

as Borat would say "Is nice!"

sounds awesome, but i would expect a little more power out of a car that prestigious and rare
konascrap888 2 years ago
now that you mention it, I forgot to talk about the fact that next year, the aileron will be getting a new engine that makes approximately 30% more horsepower than the current engine, as a result of Audi discontinuing that engine entirely. The performance should be stellar.
TheSmokingTire 2 years ago
Sweet thanks for the info...now i just gotta work on affording it haha. Great review.
konascrap888 2 years ago
Where did you get that info?
That would be sweet!! ;)
