Hurricane Gustav remains a category 3 storm. Its current motion is towards the northwest at 16mph and the outer bands of thundery rain and winds up to 64mph will be reaching New Orleans.
The power is out here now. It's been raining since 9ish. Wind gusts are about 60mph. It looks like it's heading west of here. Our power just went out. We're on back up generator 1 right now. No flooding yet.
The levees won't be complete until 2011. The levee up the street from me is just a pile of dirt. They're no where close to finished. The one's that have been rebuilt should hold. But there's some vulnerable spots.

Blanco didn't even bother to run for re-election. SHE could have called out the Guard herself, afterwards she lamely tried to tell Congress that she didn't have any because they were all in Iraq. The Commander of the Guard testified that he told her how many he could deploy (he called her BTW) from LA and other states and exactly how long it would take to do so.

There is a reason the southern part of North America is shaped like it is. It's like a hurricane alley. These storms are normal and have been taking tiny bites out of the gulf for hundreds of thousands of years. Eventually New Orleans will be completely under water. New Orleans shouldn't be there. We live on an ever changing planet and this is all natural no matter how horrible it all seems.
