Scott, thanks for your help. You are a real resource as well as a gifted player. Learning a Tommy song is like going back to school. This is a beauty.
You can make the stretch on the second chord of the intro much easier for yourself if you turn your wrist upwards, so that your thumb is naturally pointing towards the head of the guitar. The palm of your hand is really wrapping around the neck now. If you watch ScottTsai closely, you can see that he's already in this position from the start. Hope that made sense...
My hands are just not big enough to play that intro section. I can't play the basses with my thumb. I nearly hurt myself while trying. Unfortunately, if I use another fingering, the strings don't ring properly.
It's a really tough piece but so difficult. I hope I will find a way to play it as well as you do. Thank you very much for sharing. Greetings from belgium
which tommy emmanuel song do you recommend learning first? haha i'm trying to reignite that old love of playing... i lost motivation halfway through :(
awesome spirit you have man. sharing your love 4 music and sharing your knowledge which is admirable. so many guys out there who dont admit to the simple fact that it is hard work learning songs and it takes alot of time.
A tip for those who can't do the second or third chord, try using a capo (2th fret) first, once you can do the chord, remove the capo, you'll notice that your stretch has increased. I've been blessed with long thin fingers, so I guess this song isn't for everybody, but try it.
I'm having alot of trouble with the second chord of the intro. I can't seem to find a way for my fingers to adjust to such a weird feeling..any ideas?
@dewbieman2001 At first I tried the song with a capo on fret 1 seeing as my fingers were far from being able to stretch for the original... then once my fingers had stretched a little I tried it without the capo
@dewbieman2001 You can use an alternate fingering (which I use that is easier...instead of: an A on the G string (2nd fret) and D on the B string (3 fret), after your G on the low dropped D string (the low E string, 5th fret) and your G on the D string, (5th fret), bar the fifth fret an then use the A on the 7th fret of the D string and D on the 7th fret of the G string...much easier! hope that helps :)
I have only recently discovered your videos and I must say that I'm so glad that I did! Thank you so very much for what you do here. You have been most helpful!!!
Nice playing dude! I saw you played together with the master, nice! A little question, can you explain how to pick that way? I don't understand when to use your pick or fingers. Because I see you pick some high notes with only your finger, and my thought was to use for single notes and strumming only your pick and when it comes to 2 or more notes you combine your pick and fingers... Or is that not efficient/easy?
dude, where did you learn this piece? i really, really want to learn it, and so far i'm just watching your video over and over trying to figure out what you're playing. is there any other way? thanks man. i don't find the tab helpful, it seems different to what your playing???
@AnPgaming I pretty much learned it the old fashioned way by watching Tommy's live performance videos a million times haha. The tab is different because I didnt write it but I just felt it would be a good starting point for beginners. Which part specifically do you find different?
@ScottTsai well i've pretty much got the intro and verse going, but i literally watch this over and over to try and get the chorus. it's such a nice song, and i want to try a learn it so bad!! haha, but thanks for the video heaps man.
hey there Scott ! This is my first time to view your tutorials on TE music. Aside from the "master" himself, your tutorials are very detailed and quite a pleasure to understand easily. THANKS, and keep up the good work, you make learning guitar all over again really fun this time around. Now I can feel more competent about my skills.
Thanks for the lesson!! For those who feel the "stretches" are too hard to reach try dropping the tuning on your guitar a half or whole step then capo up to where you feel you can make the reach, even if the song sounds a little "higher" it's still beautiful!!
Scott, you were lucky to have been born with not only the talent and desire, but the fingers to play the guitar. I don't think I can reach those notes..
Scott, this is truly informative - you play wonderfully. I've just picked up my guitar after many years of neglect. This is somewhere to get started...I'll let you know how I get on.
When the thumb frets the 3rd fret on the sixth string and your index and middle fingers fret the "d chord"...your pinky is supposed to fret the 5th fret on the 4th string. That stretch is damn near impossible while trying to keep the first and second fingers down. When the ring finger comes up and frets the 5th fret on the 6th string, that surprisingly is a little easier. Its almost as if when my thumb frets the 6th string, the rest of my hand tightens and i have limited range of motion.
Yes i am having trouble with that stretch in the intro as well. I even recently posted a comment about this on Tommy Emmanuel's forum hoping to get some response. That stretch is really tough for me. My pinky needs to stretch about another centimeter. It makes me feel better that Scott eventually got it
I'm having trouble with the second hand position in the intro, the one erman3155 is asking about, except i have my thumb on the base D string... I can't seem to hold down the D string with my 5th finger :((
the chord is 3x523x. and i think you meant the thumb is on the bass E string right? pinky on 5th fret d, index on 2nd fret G, and middle on 3rd fret b.
if you cant reach it, just try and move your wrist around. its just practice, i couldnt reach it at all when i first started learning this song.
in the intro do you have a 4th finger on the base D 5th fret, 5th finger on the D string 5th fret, middle finger on 3rd fret B string and index finger on 2nd fret G-string?
scott. i cant begin to thanku you enough for sharing accurately! what u know, please please dont stop , i have the best guitar in the world now a " cole clark fat lady " and thanks to u, i have good insruction and chords ......... i cry for joy
What I am wondering/having major difficulty understanding is... how can we know which notes to pick and which notes to pluck (and with what finger)? Or does this not matter much? Has Tommy told you anything about this?
I was about to ask the same question. Is this the best way to get into hybrid picking? Do you just work out for yourself when to use the pick, 1st finger or third finger? And what would make you decide to use hybrid picking as oppose to using a thumbpick?
hello..you are the best of play guitar.Yes...I love your video somuch...but can you tell me how to tune the song of those who wait.....Thank ...you ...so much...I am not good for English...
