how great it must have been to hear this song as it was back then... before all the covers and even new order's live performances of it in the 2000s. a lot more pristine back then in 1986/1987.
Hooky used both 4 and 6 string bass. He played a Shergold 6 string, which is essentially a 30" scale guitar tuned an octave down. His use of a plectrum, chorus pedals, playing high on the fretboard and picking close to the bridge also contributes to the sound. It started in Joy Divison, to cut through the mud of Bernard's guitar amps.
P: The people with the money will always control it. I mean, I think you could do another punk thing now couldnt you? Put Duran Duran where they belong.
B: If I had it our way, Sigue Sigue Sputnik (80s band). In fact, were the only good group in the world really. We play live, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, and we dont do cold houses, and we dont mind.

Always better hearing the live versions from this era than the autopilot BLT played from 2001 onwards.

I have a hard time explaining to my brother that thing that sounds like a guitar is actually a six-string bass
ShortRoundMcFly72 1 year ago
@ShortRoundMcFly72 Did they use a 6 string bass?? The one here is only 4 strings right?

He might have switched from the strat to a gibson in between guitar parts. The bass is awesome in this song.
Stratocaster821990 4 years ago 2
The bass is awesome in ALL NEW ORDER and JOY DIVISION and MONACO songs. Fixed.

yeah I notice. that's a mystery. does he switch or what?
eublepharis 4 years ago 2
probably just had them do a few takes. used the Strat on one, Gretch on the other.
xiaoxia5 4 years ago 2
anyone else notice that Barney has a Fender Strat, then has his Gretch?
xiaoxia5 4 years ago
Not a Gretsch. It's a Gibson ES 335 TD with coil tap. Made from late 1970s to early 1980s.
