I'm not for hunting either, however I find it necessary to own a firearm. I never want to pull that trigger, and I never know if I ever will. Hell, I may never have to use it. However, crime does happen. Muggings, rapes, murders, hate crimes, and gang crimes happen every day, and I hope that if I am ever in a bad situation, I'm going to be alive, for my right to life is a fragile and precious thing. so is my family's.

as far as I know, Switzerland has a very low crime rate, so I think that it is inaccurate to directly compare crime rates of two nations that have notably different cultures. I'm not being hostile, just different perspectives.
Switzerland has about 6.5 deaths per 100,000 people per year that are firearm related - higher than most other countries worldwide. The US has nearly 16 per 100,000. The UK has about 0.4 per 100,000.
Homicide rates, on the other hand, are lower than the U.K. by a small amount - where they are much higher in the U.S.
The difference lies in that the Swiss have an incredibly low poverty rate - and poverty more strongly correlates with all crime than any other factor.
The U.K. is a much more similar country to the U.S. culturally, economically, and ethnically than Switzerland. But do you know what a much, much better country to compare the U.S. to is? Canada. Gun control there is only a little bit stronger than it is here - and both rate of death by firearm and rate of homicide per capita are LOWER than the U.S. but higher than "no gun" countries like England.

@itinkuno Unlike England, once people realize that the majority of rules, regulations and codes actually don't apply to everybody as with the tax laws per say; the carrying of arms should be by everyone; Florida, Arizona, Rhode Island and Alaska are great examples that when the common criminal knows that the general public is armed and potentially carrying; they have second thoughts about robbing and stealing, especially rape. I feel safer in an armed society than more cops beating up people.

@bxlxix69 ... same to you. A little research into the homicide and rape rates per capita shows that the United States ranks higher than other first world countries by a long shot in both. Perhaps disarmed criminals are less capable of the intimidation required for rape? Either way, saying that our crime rate has gone down due to gun ownership is simply not true, regardless of how safe it makes you feel.

@tac94540 You just made that up. England has much less violent crime. Wikipedia? It's a free encyclopedia. If you don't trust it, the sources are listed at the bottom. A "fact" is an item of information that can be proven true or false. So, yes, that's a fact, but it's false. Looking it up is sooooooooo easy.

@curbsideprophetlz uh they have less violent crime but thats not ratioed when you do the ratio of number of americans to UK folk you find that we actually have about the same gun deaths but much much less robberys and muggings. We end up having more manslaughter charges but you guys have more mass murders.

@armypenguin This is a ridiculously inaccurate statement on your part, and that can be shown with two seconds on google or wikipedia. Per capita (which means ratio'd to the population) the United States has approximately 33 times as many firearm deaths as the United Kingdom.
I volunteer at the Center for Homicide Research in Minneapolis, but I won't bore you with academic papers when you can't be bothered to google what you're saying before you say it. And your mass murder thing is made up.

@armypenguin Well, I told you where I'm finding my statistics. Wikipedia, and my volunteer job at the Center for Homicide Research where I send Uniform Crime Report data to the FBI for filing purposes. "Agree to disagree" doesn't exactly work with statistics anyway... we have higher firearm death, homicide, rape, robbery, and overall crime rates than the U.K.
I don't know how that qualifies as "safer" to you. We do have more freedoms. I PREFER freedom, actually. ... and truth.

Lots of people don't realize by how I talk that I am very pro second amendment. I just prefer accurate information; I think it serves the freedom agenda better than fear or anger that lots of people show (not really anyone here, but you've met them before I am sure). And I'm not sure if you were clear on this, but I am an American, living in America.

@curbsideprophetlz How do the homicide rates in England compare to those of Switzerland? I do not have direct access to the statistics you do, but I do know that every Swiss citizen is considered a part of the military reserves and has an assault-rifle in their home.
as far as I know, Switzerland has a very low crime rate, so I think that it is inaccurate to directly compare crime rates of two nations that have notably different cultures. I'm not being hostile, just different perspectives.

Switzerland has about 6.5 deaths per 100,000 people per year that are firearm related - higher than most other countries worldwide. The US has nearly 16 per 100,000. The UK has about 0.4 per 100,000.
Homicide rates, on the other hand, are lower than the U.K. by a small amount - where they are much higher in the U.S.
The difference lies in that the Swiss have an incredibly low poverty rate - and poverty more strongly correlates with all crime than any other factor.

The U.K. is a much more similar country to the U.S. culturally, economically, and ethnically than Switzerland. But do you know what a much, much better country to compare the U.S. to is? Canada. Gun control there is only a little bit stronger than it is here - and both rate of death by firearm and rate of homicide per capita are LOWER than the U.S. but higher than "no gun" countries like England.
I only started giving stats on England because people were bashing it. (bxlxix69).
