The line above the 4 is another way to write division. So by multiplying something by 4 and then dividing it by 4 means it stays the same.. they cancel each other out. Another way to do this is by dividing one of the 4's by the other one which gives you 1. Anything multiplied by 1 stays the same.

But I can't even say that's basic, cause I'd be overdoing it.

@u2betime08 Multiplication is the opposite of division right. So if you multiply the result of x/4 by 4 you are left with just x, so you can simply cross them out.
