Sounds like a clip from Computer Chronicles. Joysticks predated and instead of opto-mechanical reading of X and Y it they had potentiometers to read +/- X and Y. Those with the red lights and no ball have the successor to the opto-mechanical - it's a laser led that reads the movement visually rather than mechanically. Trackballs are opto-mechanical mice upside down with a larger ball moved by hand rather than by the surface. I still use a Mouse Systems trackball for graphics work.
My first mous was a Logitech 3-button-mouse for MS-DOS (was before Windows) for about 350 DMarks at that time. It never broke and I even never had to clean it over the years. I lost it when I moved to another place.
Damn, I remember the old mice we had with the ball underneath. Those things were a pain in the ass. They had to be cleaned every so often. Thank goodness for the laser at the bottom now, much smoother.
@FinestCitizen No, most mice don't have lasers in, laser mice the human eye can't see the light, They cost more and have better tracking. Often used for gaming mice and apple Mouses. Optical mice are the red light ones
can anyone help me? sometimes my mouse just stops moving when im playing video games and stuff on the computer -.-. then i have to restart the computer and stuff :P
You should checkout the new Jelfin Mouse. It's dramatically different design makes it very comfortable and it's covered in a soft gel cover. Not to mention it looks very stylish sitting on my desk.
Its a Laser Mouse, Its a mouse with a Camera who check every Mili sec to check if the surface have change. If it dont have change the cursor dont move. Its why you better have some Mousepad with some Design.

Actually the so called laser mouse has no laser at all it's just an LED,a 64 element CCD or CMOS optical sensor and an 8bit micro controller.
I took apart quite a few they are a good source of low res optical sensor for robots and super bright red LEDs.
