I love animation and Miyazaki, but I would have expected more from a review of this film. It is a good start of a review, but there is so much missing from it. It would have been great to have some critical observations and highlights, and even a little more background, but "This is a great film and if you like Miyazaki you're going to go see this film because he's such a great guy" just does not constitute a review!

i have to say... I really don't like the Art Work in these Studio Gibli films, they seem to lack some of the traditional anime charm... *expects a million thumbs down :P *

@shadowcontroll ghibli films are the epitome of anime, and Miyazaki is the godfather of Japanese anime. However, there's something to be said about the difference of styles between this and the more cutesy manga style.

I would even say I was haapy it finally ended... It was definitely not as bad as Tales from Earthsea tho (that one I almost fell asleep and had no idea what was it all about) but still it felt kinda empty. Missed that little something, that you can feel from miyazaki's older movies...

@KillerkoUK Tales from Earthsea was terrible. But that was a product that his son directed and adapted from the books. His father even criticized it saying it was the worst film the studio has produced.

Ponyo’s father was a man (also wizard) and her mother was a goddess, making her a demigoddess. Her actions resurrected hundreds, possibly thousands of extinct species; increased the gravitational pull between the earth and the moon, causing the oceans to rise at least a hundred feet flooding countless cities in the eastern hemisphere, and we are expected to believe that there was actually a happy ending? I’m curious to see what happened next. How long until Ponyo gets dissected? Just a thought.

@hlgnomz I agree the dub's theme song was absolutely horrid. On the other hand the original is no gem either. That's the only bad thing I can say about the original Japanese sound track. I generally hate English dubs, and Ponyo's is no exception, but I don't hate all dubs. The Italian Ponyo dub is actually pretty good. And most people who have heard it say that the Porco Rosso Italian dub is actually better than the original Japanese version. Maybe English dubbers should learn from them.

I honestly thought this movie would be awesome like Spirited Away because I use to love that movie so much! But Ponyo wasn't as great as I thought it would be. In fact the animation changed to a point where it was decent to just plain funny looking. The storyline wasn't very outstanding either... It was okay overall :/

The LA times seems really out of touch with what is current. I agree with GrawrPeeps response. The public has started to admire Miyazaki just when he is becoming mainstream/safe. Hopefully his next film will produce the creepy charm that I admire him for.

Ponya os cute, and the child like-ness of it that Miyazaki is amazing at representing is there - but I don't think its one of his best.

I really recommend Princess Mononoke and Naucissa of the Valley of the Wind - they, In my opinion, are his best works.

i have an entire collection of anime dvds that are movies originally straight from japan made by studio ghibli. i enjoy all of haiyo miyazaki's films. ponyo is one of the greatest films ever made.
