@TheDarkXzilla You can do it with 0,5l of vinegar and 50g of baking soda, but you´ll have less sodium acetate. Just scale it though. And, it does matter, what vinegar you use. You cannot use brown vinegar, because it has other chemicals in it. You can use any baking soda, just be sure it´s not baking powder. And thank you for subscribing :-)

3.) Turn off the heating ONLY when you'll see the crusty film.

4.) Put it into the freezer for about 10 minutes.

How does this physical reaction work? Does boiling it cause the evaporation of the vinegar, supersaturating the solution? I don't quite remember how we crystallize chemicals in our labs in university, but is the disturbance in the solution what causes the crystals to form? By placing it against something with some surface area, I think you allow it to crystallize.

Nice experiment, But you boiled it for way too long, You take it off the heat before it starts to crystalize, adding the water diluted it too much... It also works MUCH better with WHITE Vinegar.. Nice try tho

@pokepoo234 The reason you need to boil it is because you can mix more of a solvent (baking soda) into the solute (vinegar) when the vinegar is boiling. When you do this it's called supersaturation, which is what gives the sodium acetate it's "hot ice" properties.

Yes, wait for it, and when it´s done, add about 10ml of water into it to break that crusty film. But the homemade sodium acetate not works well like a bought sodium acetate (trihydrate or anhydrous), so on the first try doing it in home, it will maybe not work (in this case, get a equal amount of vinegar to the solution of hot ice and start boiling it just like before until you see this crusty film).,
