Australia has the answer to voter turn out. For us voting is compulsory, once your 18 you MUST register and they find you and fine you (heavily) if you dont. There are ways of getting out of it but thats less than 2 percent of population (criminals serving for serious crimes cant vote until after they get out).
But... For the love of God America dont make voting compulsory. You might have the problem of no one voting. We have the problem of stupid people voting. And ours is far worse
Yes - I have never been in favor of fines - but I disagree with your premise that the non-voters are stupid - I think the FEW who DO vote are stupid and a LOT of those non-voters have it figured out - they don't vote because they KNOW what is going on and they don't want to be part of greed and murder - the problem is - their lack of participation means we get stuck with chronic BAD gov't.
Oh I didnt make that claim that non-voters are stupid. I just say that in Aus system the stupid and misinformed have to vote. By and large I think that 2/3rds of US non-voters are intelligent human beings and perhaps i might actually be higher.
Objection to voting is all well and good but the moral power doesnt translate into political success. As cicero put it force will always best lack of force- Indirectly thinking that the government will change because you make the moral stand is basic
you forgot about the regestery system it pulls people in for Jury duty also ...thats why some dont regester...they dont want to do jury duty....cover all your bases man.
Jury duty is WAY TOO EASY To get out of - and if I could count every time I have heard someone say that they don't vote because of jury duty - I would guess it is about 1%
you can only talk for so long before people stop listneing - so to devote any time to 1% of theproblem would take away from the other 99% - see?
The System is NOT BROKEN! To say that is to BELIEVE that it was whole once. Noting could be further from the truth. The 'system' was created by religious undesireables who were kicked out of Europe and wanted to keep it all for theswelves; wealthy, white male land-owners and tyrannize women, abogiginals, dark-skinned peoples and working people. The STSTEM IS WORKING exactly how it was Designed to work!
no - it is not ever going to change - too many people reject it like this and run away from it - there are genius ideas in this system - like impeachment - but they simply do not have any potential to work - as long as over half the people don't even vote much less anything else - no the system is broken because no more than 43% has ever participated in it - try walking on 435 of your legs - you can't - but you don't throw out your whole body
Damn straight. Run for office. Do you realize that the Bush administration, I believe, not only has raised a great deal of interest in this campaign, but I think will breed an entire new wave of politicians? Ahem, including muah, should life not be cut short.
Just to make 1 thing clear, Everything on my homepage is true. I posted YT comments on RP videos saying "write RP in, even if he's not one of the top 2" I was Very passionate about it and told others to spread the word cause RP can win. I just feel we can't be neutral about the subject right now. Even if obama is worse than RP, voting for obama is one vote against McCain. Some elections were lost on a few hundred votes. Let's band together, then vote RP 2012. Peace!
Lawrence, I used to think you were a little "corny", but through your relentless messages and unwielding perseverance of truth with redundant statistics, you have won me over!
WHAT! - Now I am reading your last comment saying YOU are giving up?
You need to vote third party, just to get them in a position to debate next go round. It won't happen overnight, and waiting two more years is just against the laws of logic if your agenda is serious.
This would be a great year for non-voters to VOTE for the independent candidate of their choice. (Y'all know there are a bunch of other parties, right?)
And that's just for president. For your local races and other federal offices, you can make a difference there too, if you work together with others and each take a precinct.
"Politics is won by those who show up." Start showing up.
It's not the machine's that concern me. I just think that real power and control go way above elections. freedom is merely partial and a borderline illusion. The real corruption occurs as we are all arguing over over Republican vs Democrat. I DO however, appreciate your motivation and it IS inspiring that there are small groups of people out there who want to make a difference. Keep up your efforts and who knows, I may just make make it to the polls this November. Couldn't hurt, right?
The machines are a known issue. Check some of the recent issues of 2600 for more information on Diebold and how our electoral process is being compromised. The biggest thing that will always impact us as citzens is our neighbors sitting at home. Watching CNN/FOX/Whatever... and seeing reports from the first regions saying such and such is projected to blah blah blah. KILL YOUR TV AND GO VOTE!
This is to all the non voters! If you say you wont vote ontill "They" fiks the sis tum then you should wake up! The Government works for you! You don't work for them! YOU Mr. NonVoter have to fikx it not them!
im dropping out completly. this is not america. this is not my society....its all poison.. i live in my own world. good luck with all your bullshit......i vote for my balls.
I wonder about incentives ? Like a $10 gift card for a correctly cast ballot ? Small, but enough to get the voters out. Or you get a card with an income tax credit coupon. Gets $10-$100 off your tax bill ?
well - look what they advocate - VIOLENT REVOLUTION - I had one of them talk about -"we get guns and go to DC" and he proceeded to tell me hiw KNOWS how to use guns and all that - so I invited him to bring them and meet just me (without the full militiary detail he would run into in DC)he said he was a pacifist - LOL
He sure sounds more like a democrat than a pacifist, he wants OTHER people to die by OTHER PEOPLES hands but wants to be thought of as innocent. THAT is the "loser" I'm talking a bout.
turnout will NOT increase one bit this year - I don't care aboutthis 2008 election anymore - on to 2010 - that will be easier for me becasue when I say VOTE - people will stop talking about the president - they will more readily realise the importance of Congress
thats very true. but its a long process to raise awareness. getting people registered should be a yearlong process regardless of when the bipartisans try to shove their candidate into the presidential office. more voices, more choices.
You are thinking people are not as naive as you think? Only naive people focus on the presidency (worthless). Truth be told, those people are too new to things and don't understand that CONGRESS IS THE ANSWER and people like Cindy Shehan and other people who are NOT Republicrat... oh I could go on, but I don't have the energy.
I appreciate the sentiment - it is true people have no expectation to KNOW anything about politics - it is ALL THE MEDIA's game and they set the rules
The turnout will definitely increase if you keep at it Lawrence!! Even if it only increases by a few thousand, you will have done a fantastic job... keep it up dude!
I'm glad you said that, voteforpeace. It's about time Americans got off their butts and did something. All they want to do is sit around bad mouthing their country, but they don't even vote or become a part of the panacea to fix things. You're exactly right!
and then these non-voters leave comments like "don't vote, it only encourages them" - and I am like - NO - Karl Rove is not encouraged by people voting - he counts on 100 million to not vote for anybody
voteforpeace, yes! That's exactly right! They don't want all of America to vote, because if that happened, they men behind the curtain would be in big trouble. :)
I've said it all along. If America collapsed, American citizens would be to blame as much as anyone else in government, because they allowed it to happen.

I always vote and I always vote for Nader.
My vote has never been counted.
In Oklahoma I voted and I always voted Democratic. It didn't matter. My vote has never counted.
The system is rigged. They took the desert place and turned it into twenty states and gave each one two extra votes.

tenagliac 3 years ago
hummm food for thought, but its still rigged, cause out of 300 million people our two options are these two, its rigged just on that alone.
photofu 3 years ago
what are you talking about? look - AT most McCain and Obama will get 55 million votes each - that leaves over 100 MILLION that could vote for Barr
Nader Baldwin or McKinney - not to mention half a dozen others that are on some ballots nationwide
So I don't like to say that our options are limited - I would say are non-voters are too plentiful - THAT IS THE PROBLEM
