  • one of my all time favorite albums!. i was lucky enough to see this tour with this lineup in mass. one of my favorite concert experiences jamie and jacquin just cooked on guitar!!!

  • Rob the schools of music programs, and over time music requiring this level of skill will go away.

A lot of purely privately-instructed musicians are unlikely to pursue jazz - runs counter to classical tradition and is perceived as impractical relative to job-oreiented training a la symphony/philharmonic/studio gigs.

  • I like it this music.

  • I still have this on vinyl, through some what worn. Ralphe Armstrong on fretless P bass, awesome !!

  • I was two years out of high school when this album was first released. I had already heard lots of talk about Jean-Luc Ponty and his violin... and when this album arrived I immediately purchased it... and am still transported to something like heaven-in-my-head when I put my GRADO headphones on and cut out the stimulation of the rest of the world for an hour. This album is pure bliss! All of his music is blissful soul transforming sound!

  • Nice

  • I was intoduced to Jean Luc'cosmic messenger an era of my growing and going thru passages of my life that I missed years of listenin to this awesome musican. Just re establising my connection to his muzik I love this piece

  • one of the best or better yet the best till now.....

  • Real music

  • Ralphe Armstrong was the best bass player Ponty had by far. Tom Fowler was fantastic on the Aurora album, but no one else coud ever match Ralphe. I've been playing 4 string for a gazillion years and I still can't come close to Ralphe. Having said that....Jean's band was always stocked with over the top musicians giving us wonderful musical memories that last forever!

  • Me and my aunt went to his show yesterday, São Paulo, and man, he's a genius.

    Totally awesome

  • I saw him at Berkeley community theatre when "the gift of time was his big hit". At that time he had a female drummer that was off the chain. It was an incredible show. And yes I can remember that far back :)

  • I saw him last november 16 in Concepcion city-Chile.It was an outstanding concert with the ATLANTIC years band.

A TASTE FOR PASSION a beautiful melody.

  • Jean Luc Ponty - one of the greats

  • i grew up in DETROIT listening to WJZZ,this station tought me how to really listen to jazz.i heard it is off the air,so people who really love jazz should fight to get it back on the air not just in DETROIT,but in other major cities as well

  • this is to smooth !!!!!!

  • Not to mention the fact he is(was) awesome live every frikin time!!!

  • I love the piano in this!

  • All I can say is WOW!!! I just dug out the LP copy of this classic (yes - vinyl), put it on the Dual 601 turntable with a Shure V-15 Type IV cartridge, played thru an Onkyo amplifier which fed a pair of Klipsch LaScala speakers (augmented with a fifteen inch subwoofer) and.............Holy Cow!! (what makes me wonder about the world today is people "jamming out" on ther cell phones or what-not, thinking that they are actually hearing the music - they cannot imagine what they are missing)

  • @MrTrunkjunkmonkey i've oftened conjectured about that. when i send somebody a link to, say an electronica piece of mine, i feel compelled to say 'use speakers' or headphones, at least, instead of their crappy laptop speakers. I think digitally produced music sounds fine, but re-mastered 16-bit analog recordings sound real harsh, and render the content almost unlistenably shrill. for those of us who are older, we suffered music on little radios, though, same difference? :D

  • mega killer

  • From back when cassette tapes actually wore out wehen you ike the music this much.

  • @bahbcat haha. i destroyed many LPs and cassettes of JLP's practicing along with them!

  • The loss of intelligence by record company executives, in not promoting JLP, and like-talented musicians, is a crime!

Where shold our younger generation loook to for inspiration? No hate toward "Snoop" or Jay_Z, or anyone, but I am not in a rush to see the oldies tour of the west coast rapper-scene in thirty or so years!

  • @free2bpoppie heh, LOL.. though, i would say that the record company model is pretty much history, by now, esp. after RIAA has largely given up its assault on civil liberties, lol... If one is diligent enough, promotion can occur in a viral nature. I used to play JLP at work and customers would always ask 'who is this'? meaning he has a wide appeal, so, go ahead and share with your friends, and screw the shortsighted record moguls who only care about crassness, they're obsolete, yay!

  • Truly a great Love Song, as it was written in that vein.

  • nice....:)

  • Prince of the Sea starts almost inaudible & slow at 1st, but be patient 'cause it cooks & is one great piece!

  • I love this song. Check out on youtube- Lenny White: 'Prince of the Sea' & 'Mating Drive'-Superb Jazz Fusion

  • SUPER BAD

  • volume is not loud enough

  • I would like too start an radio station like this someday!

  • @littlebigR try last fm. cheers

  • @littlebigR

    Try Last FM.

    Cheers

  • OMG! why isn't the music industry promoting classic jazz fusion like this anymore. I know there is no shortage of great musicians. What is the problem.

There was a lot of jazz fusion in the 70's but but Jean Luc remains outstanding. Absolutely beautiful music.

  • @pluggedin2u The problem is that Jazz/fusion does not make them(the music business corporations)millions or billions of bucks like pop acts do.So there's no support. They all want the next BIG act.(Read lady Gaga..Britney Spears...Justin Bieber...so on..)Musical virtuosity has never been a requirement. For THEM!

  • @gebass6 And its always been that way. With Youtube though, I know that so much more is available. I know I never would have heard of Boards of Canada, Air, Four Tet, or Piano Magic on the radio. Listened to alot of Jean-Luc Ponty and the Art of Noise in the 80's, but only on Alternative stations that only lasted a year or so and then folded.

  • @pluggedin2u because we live in shitty consumer world, i would give anything to hear this on radio stations every single day!!

  • @AORCrazy now now, the concept of 'radio stations' has been rendered obsolete due to the advent of internet radio and mp3 players. i am one of JLPs biggest fans. crappy consumerist music has always been there, remember the 50s? now we have the power to create our own soundscapes, and have instant access to all kinds of awesome music, new and old (yes there is new awesome music, look hard...) . what you focus on expands, focus on 'shitty consumer world', and that is all you will see...

  • @pluggedin2u 'For discerning cinema goers' - this is how an art cinema in a megacity was once advertised because only foreign or indie movies showed there.

It just wasn't for the masses.

Same with Jean-Luc Ponty, Pat Metheny and many other jazz artists. They know they only cover a niche. Perhaps they are far more proud of that than to be liked by the masses. Because what the masses like today could be easily taken over by something else tomorrow.

    Ponty is forever.

  • @pluggedin2u ; The kids today ,in a point and click world are for the most part unable to concentrate on one thing long enough, due to so many distractions ,to appreciate real music which you have to actually listen too.So sad. This is original not so ,re-hashed sample!

  • that piano rift. OMG hey guys fetch mp3 and this song is youre. free

  • that piano rift. OMG

  • left me stupid!! WOW

  • I love this song and I also lo the live version of Gift of Time! If you haven't heard it get the cd Live from Chene Park in Detroit! The CD is a KILLER!

  • Love this! Could you put up "Life Cycles"?

  • @jcapeverde Yes!"Life Cycles" is the high point of this disc for me also!!I second the request.

  • If I remember my credits correctly, ALL of the music was played by JLP & the tracks were laaid to create this virtuoso piece.

  • @newday613 Jean played violin and electric piano on this track. Joaquin Lievano played guitar, Ralph Armstrong played bass, and Casey Scheuerell played drums and percussion

  • I took lessons and played tenor for a year ('Trane's Naima), enjoyed it immensely, but I never got good enough to play along with Jean-luc on THIS track! Fantastic!

  • Comment removed

  • Eterno ..

  • This is truly one of the best tracks ever!

  • I forgot how good this was....

  • How long I have searched for this track. Reminds me of a certain section coming to Hanoi International airport. First time I heard it. Whenever I heard it it reminds me of that stretch of road. Weird.
