the similarities between sambo, judo, and jujitsu are unbelievable! obviously judo came from jujitsu, but i find it interesting that there were men of the same genius in russia as there were in eastasia, who created such effective and brutal martial arts.

With the russian domination when judo became an olympic sport, new rules have been implemented into judo to balance their advantage and it killed the spirit and agressiveness of the sport. Now its a great martial art for kids, but I wouldnt rely on the newschool judo for self protection. A lot of techniques and grips have been banned because they were qualified as too effective. "great evolution". They're still thaught in sambo.

@RUSSKISAMBIST My friend,i think that Greco Roman Wrestling is more explosive than sambo due the fact that,since you can't attack below the waist you need much more explosiveness to perform a takedown.

In sambo the use of gi and the fact that you can also attack to your opponents legs makes you be less closer to your opponent than in greco,where you have to became "one" with your opponent...

@wozzi71 Sambo is derived from a combination of Judo and the native wrestling styles of the former USSR/Russian Empire. The rules are different (e.g. leg locks are allowed in Sambo competition but not Judo), but they're very similar sports. They're even closer these days: in 60s, the Soviets started competing in Judo and it resulted in a further mixing.

Sambo is very similar to judo, about 80% judo I say. Add some wrestling, remove chokes and add leglocks you get sport sambo.

Combat sambo you add boxing and keep chokes :D !

You can tell this has an serious judo influence but BJJ does also. I will say watching a Sambo match even a combat one doesn't appear to be as exciting as a Vale Tudo match. That being the case I'd still love to learn t& train in this discipline, too bad ain't no place to train in Indianapolis.

You might find an interpretation but it's not like Kodokan judo, where everything is indexed.  Any one throw will have different names in different schools, and there isn't really a unified way to execute things.

As for today, Combat Sambo is probably the most lethal martial art of all. It's even better than brazilian jujitsu because it does have striking techniques + lot of joint locks. Awesome.

ya lots of them do apply without gi though with elbow and behind the neck tie up. Just the same that BJJ all the greats train most of time with gi on and make the transitions.

actually, using the gi is more realistic for self-defense, and yes, it is easy to grab someone's shirt, jacket, pants, etc., but i appreciate no-gi techniques because you don't need to rely on them. Most techniques can be modified from gi to no-gi application.
