  • Is that the spectrum beeper in action?

  • @telemetry9 Nice early use of the beeper.

  • much prefer the beeper to the AY chip that replaced it.

  • Wow i love those sounds :P. Never owned a Spectrum back in the days but i like what i have seen so far. A neat lttle maschine!

  • I had to quit this game, so difficult.....

  • My mate hates this game, he never got past the wall at the start.

  • Once, and only once I got all 5 scientists. I was on my way back with number 5, the palms were sweating, I was on my last life and yes, I got killed two TWO bloody screens away from the end.

Flying this copter was harder than flying the real Airwolf. Probably.

I never played it again after that.

A tough game that wasn't all that great.

  • Jesus Spinny your a master at this game- I remember it well and it was bloody hard!

  • 9Pix9 is the master! He's the best speccy player on yt. With a redefine keys option it would have been easier. Saying that it was always impossible to get past the laser thing at the cannon.

  • To me this was always harder then flying helis in Battlefield 2. I consistently sucked at Air Wolf.

  • Is that all that happens when you complete the game - a little noise and you carry on playing? Dammit, I'm quite glad I didnt persevere with this all those years ago if that was the only reward!

I just about made it past the walls, then got stuck on the big radars...happy days. Good work on finishing this one off, impressive!

  • Well, it's not actually completed. You have to rescue 5 scientists to complete the game. 9Pix9 has put the complete walkthrough up.

  • This game was written by Richard Wilcox who, along with myself and several other old 8 bit coders went on to make the TV shows Gamesmaster and Games World which UK folks may remember from the early 90s.

  • I used to watch Gamesmaster but I don't remember Games World. I must have been down the pub when that was on. Thanks for the background info.

  • i mean cheat because i kept saving on my spec emulator couldnt do that in the 80s!

  • yes took me 20 years to complete this i had to cheat though

  • I wonder how many young players (me included) became completely mad with this kind of games.

So hard that nervous breakdown is guaranteed.

  • More a game for older players. This still stressed me out making the video.

  • i think they coded the gravity last thinking it'd be cool without realising how completely impossible it made it

  • They got it wrong with the helicopter handling. Not impossible, but took a massive amount of playing and persevering.

  • Me and my brother spent hours trying to beat this game, we could only make it halfway. SO difficult! I slide an internet beer your way, fantastic job!

  • It took a lot of playing. You either gave up or persevered with it. My mate was good at it so I had to keep playing it to try and keep up with him. Thanks mate! I could do with a beer. Cheers!

  • @Revels i don''t remember completing a single zx spectrum game they were all hardcore lol

  • Soooooooooooo much respect is due due to you for being so good at this. My childhood was tortured by this game!!!

  • Holy crap!!! I had this game for years and never got past 0:26!! Haha

  • One of the hardest games to play. It takes a lot of perseverence to get to grips with. It also helps playing it with a few mates to build up the competitive side of your game playing.

  • good game for 84.

  • Very well played, a ridiculously hard game and I never had the patience to get half as far as you did.

  • I never played it, but it seems pretty easy on this video... I suppose it wasn't?

  • I assure you, this game is not easy. You mention Airwolf to any Spectrum fan and they know what it was like. Immensely difficult.

  • Then you did an excellent job! ;)

  • The key layout made it damn hard. This game would drive anyone mad.

  • I've never before seen that done and never thought I would. I used to hate that game for being so stupidly difficult ( hell, I was 9!).

Thank god for Spinnyfuck and Spewtube

  • I didn't think I would be able to do it 20 years later.

    Cheers mate!

  • This brings back some memories alright, i recall being the only kid in my class who liked this game which took me about a month to complete. Yes it was extremely hard as i recall, but from reading the posts people seem 2 think you`ve finished the game, let me assure you if you thought level 1 was hard wait until you see the final level, it`s insane without doubt my greatest achievment in gaming until Gunsmoke & Rygar came out on the arcades. People would slag this game but 4 me it`s just so cool

  • No wonder they think I finished it. Most people never got this far. I saw the final level years ago and know how tough that was. Just repeat this 4 more times without your hands falling off. It's not worth the pain nowadays.

  • super

  • Thank you!

  • Hard. Too hard. But I still remember easier way to pass second wall: Pass the screen with the second wall (fly to another screen on your left). Then fly low, back to the scren with the second wall from left side and straight into the hole. This was the easiest part the game for me.

Airwolf 2 was also weird. It was a side scroller but from right to left, unlike any other game I know.

  • I know the technique for flying low back through the screen. It's easier but it takes up precious time which you need later in the game. Oh Airwolf 2 was terrible! I hated that game.

  • This was as tough as a whores heart m8.I remember trying to get by the 4th screen. Thanks for showing me i've only waited 20 odd years for it.lol.1 Tough mofo

  • As soon as you loaded this up some of your mates would start complaining because they wanted to play something else. Not a game for everyone. Very, very, very hard! No bother mate!

  • this game was so tough. probably got to about the third screen and i thought that was an achievement in itself. who ever programmed this needed hanging by his testicles!!

  • Initially, the 2nd wall where you go down was tough. Took quite a few games to pass it. Then you have the nice kind of 3D effect below. Richard Wilcox is the man who programmed this and nothing else. I can imagine the makers of Airwolf were not happy and Richard received his marching orders! It is a bastard of a game though! A redefine keys would have made it a lot easier, if that's possible! I blame my RSI on this game, lol!

  • this pooor guy musthave died a thousandf times before he could do this

    :)

  • Well, not quite! This is the third attempt on the same day. Surprised myself really!

  • damn

u must have a real airwolf talent then

  • Just lucky at the time, I guess. If I hadn't succeeded on this attempt it was going to get switched off and probably forgotten.

  • Without a doubt you are the Airwolf don! This game was so hard - I used to come back to this and Murphy every few months for years when I was a kid. I never got past about 6 screens. I'm inspired!!

  • dude, you're awesome. long time ago, i only manage to past 5 frames only! lol

  • Thanks mate! A very tough game.

  • RESPECT !

This was probably the most difficult game ever made and you need bucket loads of patience for it. ...That and the cassette tape loader ! (5 mins... what an eternity !!)

  • Without a doubt a tough game! After getting to the scientist your hands were aching and it would cost you lives on the way back. At the time I enjoyed the wait for loading and the screen would put you in the mood for the game. Then I got a +3 which was so much faster!

    Cheers mate!

  • Dam this brings it all back for me. The good old days.

  • aggree! :)

  • outstanding! I remember my brother doing this, it had all of us glued to the telly watching him and yes the only way passed the laser barriers was to use the pause, amazing i was on the edge of my seat again!

  • That sounds strangely familiar! This game had me re-living all those moments again. Had to take a rest at the last wall with one copter left.

  • Thats understandable at that point i needed to rest as well!

  • You're an airwolf mastah!!!!

  • Hey, high fives dude! Thank you!

  • For some reason for the first time in 20 years I fancied having a game of Airwolf and came across your video first. It reminded me of how losing a life scared the crap out of me. Think I'll check out the game when I feel a bit braver. Thanks for the video!

  • It takes a few games to get back into it. Played 3 games the day before this video and just got frustrated. Next day played another 3 games and this was the result. Stick at it and you'll get a result. Cheers mate!

  • im sweating watching this the fucin hrs i played this when i was about 14 and couldnt get past the satellites hat off to ya youve made my day respect to you

    regards sizzy

  • Cheers mate! Sounds like all the bad memories came back to you watching this. Hope you've got rid of the demons now...lol!

  • l HATED this game. l couldn't get past the first screen. l wasn't very good at this type of game.

  • Needs lots of practice. But the keys can be tricky. Maybe easier on a joystick for some people but not me.

  • what is happening at 1:25 and 1:50???

  • I was using the pause key to get past the laser beam. It's a tricky part of the game trying to hover above it with a cannon firing at you all the time.

  • You need to rescue another 4 scientists after this and then you get the end message "Congratulations Pilot".

  • Wow that was a nostalgia trip for sure :) I loved the game but got stuck at one place I could never get past. Question: What happened in the ending? That noice and then nothing? Did it start over again? What?

  • For anyone who has never played this game, Spinnyfuck is probably more elite than number of people to have climbed Everest. I am sure that less people have managed to complete airwolf. Excellent job Spinnyfuck. (PS. Approximately 1400 people have climbed everest).

  • I was thinking of climbing Everest but too many people have completed it - no challenge anymore! Is that 1400 people successfully climbing it? Cheers mate!

  • Yep 1400 successful attempts.

  • I don't think I want to hear about the unsuccessful ones that never made it back. That must be pretty high as well.

  • This game....this game is superb. When u die, u know it is your fault 100%. Just one more go... I can do it

  • You sound a bit like a Codemasters inlay card...lol! I know what you mean though. Once you take off there's nowhere to land until you get back to the beginning. Pressure or what!

  • i think you'll find that the music to Streethawk or The Equalizer was way better. Was there ever a computer game based on The Equalizer? Old Edward Woodwardwood would(!) have raked it in...

  • No Equalizer on the speccy I'm afraid. Old Ted wouldn't have got a penny from it anyway as CBS would have taken it all. Just like when Buck Rogers got nothing when Fairlight came out.

  • biddy,biddy,biddy...

  • Twiki, Twiki, Twiki...

  • Probably would have been better if I had added the theme music but I don't have it unfortunately. Difficult game to get to grips with because of the keys. All I can say is practice helps. It can be a very frustrating game. Cheers mate!

  • Wow! I'm sitting here in absolute awe and jealously. I wasted HOURS as a teenager in the 80s trying to complete this game from Elite. Never got any further than half way. Respect.Totally agree about the lack of any physical tie-in to the actual TV series (have you all bought it on DVD yet? 1st Season's the best)... like where did Airwolf get skids from?... and the joys of that theme tune would have been great if the Elite programmers had worked out how to do Multi-channel music by then.

  • everyone raved about this game at the time but i couldnt see the attraction - plus, it's got nothing in common with the tv series! where's the old duffer that sits in the back??

  • A tv tie-in at the time would sell anything. I've got the original speccy tape signed by Airwolf. The old duffer is Koktoni Wolf...respect man!

  • Old duffer was Ernie Borgnine

  • Now I remember! It's been a long time since I saw the series, I'm probably the old duffer now. Airwolf 3 anyone?

  • I,ll give it ago as i,ve been a bit too negative about speccy games just recently to my eternal shame :( born again Fawltykog

  • A request! Can you post a video of you doing Airwolf and Airwolf 2? If you get the time, and there's no rush, a bit of Technician Fred would be great. I used to love that game! ;)

  • Totally useless game, played it a few times got absolutly no where and gave up in frustration :(

  • I think you need to give it a chance. Trying playing it again and see if you're right...lol!

  • one of the first games i played. Hard, really hard. I remmember dreaming of hellicopter crashing and crashing ;-)

  • It was the constant hovering and moving in confined spaces that made it so hard. Touch anything in this game and you lose a life.
