It is being recycled as an artificial reef. It won't negatively affect the environment as all oil, gas/fuel etc is removed and the whole thing is cleaned before sinking. It's a beautiful wreck to dive :o)

Scrap iron needs to go thru the same process to make new steel.. They use a certain percent of scrap iron in the melt to make new steel too.

A ship used as an artificial reef is sanitized of hazardous material and reusable parts and materials.. What they sink is basicly the empty hull which will be gone in a couple of years. Iron oxide is found naturally in nature..
