Rofl my family once ran an American insurance company. I have never in my life heard of the treatment of spousal abuse related injuries being treated as a preexisting condition. The only scenerio I can imagine is if your spouse has had a long legal history of this behavior before you applied for insurance. IMHO in that situation the company is very much in it's right to say "no the hell we won't pay for you to allow yourself to be beaten!"
