@TKUYG Yes, definite differences! The writing systems are the same for both, as with China as a whole, but the real difference is the way words are pronounced. The dialect is so different and distinguished that they almost sound like different languages. There are a few different dialects in China/Taiwain...but Mandarin and Cantonese are the two most used in the biggest populated areas... Northern/Southern china, etc.
@TyphoonBling i have been wondering why its all the same translation &meaning for Ai with those 3 languages. I am a huge music person! before 8months ago, I didnt know any words in Mandarin. I have a Chinese bf since April 2011. I have some Chinese singing covers on my channel. U r more than welcome to check them out! My bf teaches me Chinese on QQ, a social site in China!
@TyphoonBling i think I may of found an example: LOVE. For Mandarin, Cantonese & Japanese, its translation is Ai. Ive been wondering why its the same, but for Korean, its salang.
I've been learning Japanese for nearly 5 months. Is the Chinese Kanji the same as the Japanese. I know the Japanese Kanji originated from the Chinese but are the the same or not? :/
@CanadaxIreland The Chinese characters are similar to Japanese Kanji because as you knew, it was borrowed originally from them. Of course Japanese have their own two separate alphabets not affiliated with the Standard Chinese. The differences are basically of course the pronunciation and most importantly the meanings. A lot of the meanings are similar, but most differ with the way the radicals are depicted. So for instance one symbol could mean something in Chinese and different in Japanese.
@CanadaxIreland The meanings and pronunciations are the biggest differences, but many look similar and could have similar meanings like the use of "One" or "Person" mean the same in the symbol, but have different On and Kun pronunciation as they are two very different languages:) BTW I know Japanese and Cantonese, this is what I gather from differing the both, good luck to you friend.
OMG ok, this is traditional Chinese, I am American but I am trying to learn Chinese, and I was so confused about the writing, but that is just because it is traditional lol ok I understand now. Great now I am going to be obsessed with this song lol
