  • I was stationed in Armstrong barracks from June of 65, to Jan of 68.

My service could have been a lot worse !

  • I was there from 61--63 3rd armor division.

  • I was C batt 3/61ADA 81 to 82. Lived above Monicas with 2 other GIs. Does anyone remember Monicas ?? I was quite young, and quite awestruck by this mystical place. And the locals were wonderfull, and understanding folks. A time of my life I will never forget!

  • @winroper You must be talking about Moni's place up in the old city.. She closed a few years ago.

  • Have alot of fond memories of this place was there frm 92-95

  • The best town in Germany...

  • Just returned from Budingen on March 10. 2010 after a 3 week stay. First visit was in 1999. I love this city and the German people. I have family living in nearby Orleshausen. Hello Harris Family!!!

  • I live in Büdingen and I love this town :-) Couldn't live somewhere else ;-)

  • I was also stationed there from 81-92 in B 3/61 ADA. Had some really good times and good memories

  • @brianobrian1812

Lol, what did I do now?

  • I was stationed ther from 1965 to 1968. It sstill looks the same.

  • @Rallow My father in law was stationed there from 64-66.

  • Hello German folks. Yes that was home for my familia and I for 3 years. I worked at Armsgtong kasern and lived in Dudelshime. I love Germany. it will always be in my heart. From San Antonio Texas cheers.

  • HOME.

  • the houses at 5:04 are ok now..

  • Where were the army barracks? Outside the city a ways? I have been a few times and haven't seen buildings that look like family housing either. When did the base close?

  • They are outside the city...direction Lorbach (main entrance) and Orleshausen. Of course now they are abandoned. It was fun having the soldiers in Büdingen!

  • @aceroadwheel The base closed in 2006/2007.

  • My husband was stationed there for 5 years and we LOVED it! I hated the thought of living in government housing so we found an amazing house in Aulendiebach(if Im spelling it right) and just loved it. My landlady didnt speak much English and I had just taken a "conversational German" course before arriving, and she would take me out to see Buedingen, the fun spots for coffee, breakfast, etc. I loved it there and this video deff takes me back. I never wanted to leave!!!

  • @susie4larry

    I lived there in 1985-1988

    I cried when I left.

  • I really loved this travelogue and am grateful to a beauty from Budingen who shared it with me.

Andrew I love your style and I am a very enthusiastic new subscriber in South Florida, (with links to Ludwigshafen and Malsch from my cherished grandparents!) ~Terry ★★★★★

  • A very nice tour around a place I have never been! Thanks for sharing! 5*+ Thank you Christel for sharing!!

    Dr. Med. Howard Ritter

  • I just found that my family lineage in the United States started with Elias Ritter, born in Buedingen, probably in early 1600s, and emigrated to Maryland about 1650. Ironically, 30 yrs ago I was stationed with the US Air Force in Wiesbaden, 90 km away! I knew nothing of my connection to Buedingen at that time, of course, only that my ancestor had come from Germany many generations earlier.

I hope to visit Buedingen in October 2009. I invite email hlritter(AT)bex(DOT)net.

  • Meine Heimatstadt! Ich liebe sie, Danke für das tolle Video, Du hast Büdingen gut getroffen. Die Villa Alfred ist inzwischen verkauft.

  • I was there 59-61 U,S.B troop 3rd Armor Div. 12 Cav.

It was a nice town. My favorite Bar the Post Horn,it was a GI bar. I see the empty base is still there I see it in Google Earth.

  • I was also stationed in Swingin Budingen from 82-90. I was in B Btry 3/61 ADA. After I got out, I worked for a German Construction Co. in the Castle.

  • hey you too ha..Me 90-93 worked at dental clinic. I really miss that place..I lived in Dudelshime..nice little town..

  • I lived there...

  • I was stationed in Budingen from Oct 69 to Apr 70 when my unit 2bn83FA moved to Babenhausen. It was my impression that the kaserne had been used as a Nazi R&R center during WWII. We had a very bad rat problem in our barracks..so much so that they would get into the drain pipes and crawl into the toilet bowls after having been flushed. Sorry to hear the old place is closed now but it was getting a little long in the tooth even back in the 60's, however it was a pleasant alternative to Vietnam

  • Swingin' Budingen. Yeah, I remember being there. I'd much rather go back someday to my old stomping ground--Berlin.

  • Great Video. I am also an old Budinger from the Army 86-89. Sort of sorry to hear the Kasserne is deserted - it was a neat old place. Always meant to get back, but never have - yet.

  • My husband and I were there at the same time!!

    God,I loved Germany!!

    We lived in Alendiebach (sp?).

  • heya you too. I was there in Armstrong Kasern 90-93. I worked at the dental clinic that white builing. I live in Dudelshime. I miss that place.

  • and we miss the yanks :'(

  • After a 24 year absence, I got to visit Budingen once again, this February.

The town has changed a bit, grown a bit and even the now-deserted Armstrong Kaserne, did not look too familiar (and I almost got detained for taking a picture of the entrance, to this empty Kaserne!)

Old town pretty well looked the same.

Walhalla is now gone and in its place is a Chinese restaurant!? Oy!

Cafe Hell was still there... So was the Hole in the Wall but, Wolfgang had forgotten me! lol

  • 24 years is a long time, of course. I always find it strange visiting places you knew long ago: it's *almost* how you remember it, but so many things are subtly different from what you thought you knew. It's as if you've slipped into a parallel universe.

  • Nice video. Brings back great memories. I'm from Tinley Park, IL. which is one of Budingen's sisters cities. I hope to go back soon!!!!!

  • I like your video. I live in Büdingen and I love the city. It is a great place to be...not to small and not to big. It's calm and so beautiful. I could never ever live in another city!

  • If I remember correctly, the Hole in the Wall was not too far from the cinema?

The Prince of Budingen was a bit advanced in age and back then (circa 1982,) he was a bit "upset" because some idiot GI's had poached a few of his ducks. (I was commissioned to do drawings of Budingen locales, for use in a cookbook and we presented it as a gift/apology to the Prince.)

  • I was stationed at Budingen (Armstrong Kaserne, HHB, 3/61st ADA, 3rd Armored Division) 1981/1983 (lived on post) and it would be great to stumble on friends from that era... I have many pictures from this time period and btw, the owners of the "Hole in the Wall" were my friends! (Wolfgang and wife) There was also Walhalla (a GI hang-out) and Schlossmuhle and a "no Americans" bar with an antique bicycle as its sign...

  • I was with the 4/7 Cav there 3rd AD from 89-91

  • I was there in the US Army from 73-76. I lived on the street that goes through the main entrance to the old town. It was called Obergasse. Used to drink at the 'Hole In The Wall'. Good times there! Danke!

  • my hometown! <3

  • I spent 3 years here in the army, Met my wife here. A really nice video of a nice german town.
