Do people really believe this movie portrays the truth? I wonder why this movie doesn't talk about how severe the persecution of the saints was. Its a completely 1-sided and historically inaccurate movie. Brigham sent word for the saints to NOT attack. This message arrived 2 days after the incident took place.
They are very similar to terrorists. This mormon church just sounds like that cult of Islam. Smith just made up new rules so he could satisfy his lust and have more wives. Muhammad did the same thing. Mormans marry underage girls. Muhammad did the same thing. Smith created a whole new way for his people to live, harshly treating any who leave the church. Muhammad's Islam does the same thing and Islam is the work of the devil as sure as Jesus is the son of god.
I think Voight is a good man at heart, but obviously misinformed as to what actually happened in Mountain Meadows - which was basically a tragic mistake that a very small group of scared Mormons made while fortifying themselves against their persecutors. This tragedy was NOT committed in any way, shape or form by Brigham Young, by the way.
all I can say to this is that the world can talk.... we'll let them talk after all we can do, it is up to them to decide. because in the end they know nothing about God... his ways are higher than man. his thoughts are not our thoughts. people who point fingers at the church are those who like to take the easy road. if you want to find out, please do yourself a favor and speak to missionaries. and last but not least.... pray...
These teachings included doctrines about God's vengeance against those who had killed Mormon prophets, some of whom were from Arkansas. God nor Jesus Christ would ever tell u to kill pple b/c of murdering someone their religion is made up by the founders of their cult.
The film was a complete sham, depicting unsubstantiated conjecture as "history," while leaving out the context of the story. It was an obvious attempt to mislead it's viewers and take yet another shot at Mormons, again.
I had not heard of the 'Meadows Massacre' until the hype about this movie. But it makes me want to research it a little more. Are you saying that Brigham Young had nothing to do with it? Are you saying Mormons had nothing to do with it? Please, if you can, direct me to some research materials on the subject. Who are these 1000's of Mormons slaughtered? Again, tell me where I can find this information.
There's some evidence that BY knew about it, but being the prophet of God, it stands to reason that he knew what the church was doing, doesn't it? After all, the church is supposed to be the same one Jesus established on earth, now restored, so wouldn't the savior of mankind let his prophet in on current events?
The truth is that Mormons were persecuted and murdered, but they also murdered others. Thousands? Perhaps.
@rkg62976 Hi, I'm glad you asked about the Mormon 'Meadows Massacre', and also about the persecutions of the Mormons. It made me think. Mormons are not perfect, but collectively they are some of the most wonderful freedom loving, and caring people I know. I joined the church when I was 23.
Due to space constraints, I'm going to send another message to you, of some quick, well-documented, powerful events...
1. Joseph Smith (the main organizer of the church) spent a total of 2 years in various prisons, on false charges - he was never convicted. He and his brother freely turned themselves in at the last prison where they were murdered by a mob.
((continued from message below)) Now, lets say Joseph Smith was a power-hungry, controlling, and a money-grabbing liar - with all the accompanying wealth, power, and militia at his command; do you think such a person would have even spent more than a single day an ANY of these little jail-houses, seeing he was so cunning and was so resourced with wealth and human power (or followers)?
((continued from message below)) 2. I forgot what I was going to say next.... I'll just say, I have a strong and spiritual testimony of the truthfulness of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The Book of Mormon is packed with astonishingly wonderful wisdoms and truths pertaining to how man should love and serve his neighbor, and what kind of being god, or, the creator of all living things, is like.
SEPTEMBER DAWN failed misserably at the box office and received 0/4 stars. It was purely political and Jon Voight should be ashamed of himself for appearing in it. Jon Voight should have woken up and seen that Mitt Romney was the right guy to lead us to victory, but instead we got McCain, who is a decent guy, but was just old and tired.
its been on Mormon websites for years...its never been covered-up...It just sounds better when you lie. If you did any amount of research you would no this
There has been no attempt to "cover up" It was a feature article in the church magazine "The Ensign", it as been spoke about at General Conference and researched and published on by many Mormon researchers.
It is disappointing to me that Jon Voight would be part of such a film. The film is wrong. It is also disappointing that Colmes had to take the time to argue about the war instead of taliking about why Jon Voight would act in such a movie.
Tying this to 9-11 is basically saying the Mormons are equal to terrorists.
John Vought is a has been not a "legendary actor" He can barely speak extempranously. He has to read some diatribe from Sean Penn?
He has no idea about the details of the event that happened 150 yeras ago. Anyone that knows the basics of screen writing is that the very essence of any "good" story is antagonism. Where are the movies about the thousands of mormons that were killed at the hands of the US government???????
I agree the Mormons were forced from there homes by our government and we focus on one bad thing that they did. To top it off the film is historically inacurate, Brigham Young had nothing to do with this event, if you do proper research. It was a horrible thing that happen but it would be nice if Hollywood would get it right instead of "Hollywooden It Up"
thanks, I stand corrected; RENAGADE is more appropriate. "Encounter" is a little understated. everything else I said I stand by. Oh, and I miss-spelled 'intentional'.
NOT "a runaway Mormon group" a highly ritualized, intential act of mass murder for material gain and grotesquely misplaced revenge.and orchistrated by BRIGHAM YOUNG and his underlings.
ignoring it only tacitly condones it. admit it happened , admit it was wrong and reform the dogmas that led to it. then we. we can agree to disagree and recognise religious divirsity as legitimate.
( btw- alan is a bit of a tool in this interview )
nobody is arguing the fact that it happened. but neither you nor i know all the details of this situation, and blaming the mormon church like it's a factual part of history is an ignorant and intolerant thing indeed.
"D minus.... Clearly "September Dawn" is constructed as an anti-Mormon diatribe disguised as a historical narrative.... Like most 'historical' pictures, [it] has serious problems in historical terms. But in this case they're exacerbated by the simple ineptitude of the filmmaking." - Dr. Frank Swietek who is not only a film critic, but also Associate Professor of History at the University of Dallas
"There isn't anything to be gained in telling this story in this way. It generates bad feelings on all sides...The Mormons are presented in no better light than the Japanese were in Hollywood's World War II films. Wasn't there a more thoughtful and insightful way to consider this historical event?" - Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times (24 August 2007)
Jon Voight is a great actor, but his political views are warped. He claimed on The O'Reilly Factor that we "shouldn't criticize the President during wartime", and that "America is not an imperialist nation". Hmm...militarily invading 41 countries, overthrowing democratically elected governments, implementing and maintaining dictatorships don't count, I suppose.

"while fortifying themselves against their persecutors"
uh, no. the Fancher-Baker party did not persecute the Mormons. they were obviously a peaceful emigration party that included families with children.
check your facts.
