To whoever said this was just convention and not an actual city. Wrong... first off, anywhere people congregate and live for any amount of time, can potentially become a city. And you think just because they're importing things in that it demotes that status? Over 90% of the food at your store is shipped in from elsewhere. So yeah, maybe it takes away from the "self reliance" a bit, but it still functions as any other city would. Just in a temporary fashion.
@zigertube So is your redundant and non-constructive response, and you can say whatever you like. I've done this time and time again, and not just at Burning Man. We did the same thing in countless drop-zones in the service, and often for 6-8 months at a time. Not a thing I said was un-true. I'm certainly not advocating that we all try to comform to a system like this, because it isn't built for the long term, but all the basics are there for a small society.
ummmmm....you can't really compare Black Rock with New York City.
1.) New York exsists on a 24 HOUR, ALL YEAR basis. If this were the case for Black rock, which would be required to supply it's residents with food and warmth, the city wouldn't last three months.
2.) If you made 50,000 people live in the same place for longer than a month...in the desert...yeah, not so hippie happy anymore.
part of it is appealing but being spiritually aware, the symbolism of a burning man has always concerned me. it seems concerningly close to satanic somehow. it's like a live high voltage wire dangling near a pool of water. without clear definition of what is meant by that burning man it seems to be a spiritual pitfall waiting to happen.
@kudjo24 actually didn't know about that but shows how right the intuition is.
there is also the more blatantly satanic ritual performed by the bohemian grove club where they burn a man in effigy and call him 'care'. burning of care.
@DanFrederiksen well man thats the thing about the Burning Man that attracts so many people, is that it doesnt have any specific spiritual meaning. You could look at it like a, i dont know, an alter to satan or whate ever. Or you could look at it like a sign from god.
Me, im an athiest, so i dont really take any spiritual meaning out of it. But it is so, so cool to see all these people becoming friends and sharing stories. Definitely going next year, its a great experience.
anyone remember in Easy Rider where the Hippies in that commune are trying to have a utopia out in the desert and it was sort of ambiguous if they would be able to make it. looking back on it now, we know they probably failed.
I think i saw Nicolas Cage in a movie like this. It was strange. Like the Idea of how this is like a..how to say..uhh...mini utopia. No trash is left behind and it all goes back to the way it was before they came. +1 for creativity :P
@TheMostAnnoyingTroll cmon man you cant have a name like that and troll effectively; you're a fucking amature. But, your comment is a step in the right direction.
@RealArcalian I've seen people grown enough food for a family of 4 off 1/10th an acre. Very down to earth honest people doing stuff like this because they don't like how dependent we are on this system.
People need to work on expanding their vocabulary. Why are people calling these people hippies? Is that the only word you know for people who aren't like you?
Anyone else think Burning Man is very ass- backwards? No commerce (well, except for drug sales) but yet you have to buy a ticket? No cars, except "art" cars? one of the "art" cars in the video is an extremely large delivery-van with some red lights on it. I'm all for large festivals of people, but I can find ways to relate to the earth, and the people who inhabit it, better than burning a gigantic wooden structure and shooting off fireworks every night. Fireworks? Seriously? AM-UUUR-ICA!
@YomamasGaming If you have never been there, then you have no idea of the hard work, sweat, spirituality, and manpower it takes to pull this off. Stop commenting on things you know nothing of, it makes you look like a jackass.
if i had a nuke, this is where it would go. even though these people have good intentions, they are still extremists and no extremist should be allowed to live. and i know its extremist of me to say that but if there weren't any extremist then there would be no need for these thoughts of mine.
@AndreProductionVideo sorry those politics have clouded your mind. even though i am not one of those... "extremists" as you called them, how is that so if you said your self they had GOOD intentions... BTW stop trolling.
@AndreProductionVideo hahahaha the fuck? Really? They? Extremists? If anything, they're just "extremists" towards love, art and drugs. Big fucking deal -_-
@dfitz93 and i didnt mispell shit except for maybe the plural form of "hippy". go fuck your self in the ass with the larger cock of your semantic bulll shit!
i'd like something like this to exist in central park and the rest of manhattan the way it is. you should have fun sometimes but things still need to be done.
The economic part- as much as I do agree with the Left of economics, I must do so pragmatically, and point out that, again, Burning Man is a temporary city, with lots of inputs brought in from elsewhere. It's not a long-term settlement that produces all of the things consumed there; making macroeconomic observations on it and trying to apply them to permanent settlements or societies that produce, manage resources, invest in capital, etc is problematic.
My other concern is the trash- people don't 'take care of their own trash'; they bring it to the dump themselves. You still need a municipal dump and waste system. That said, making people bring their trash to dump themselves? Could be nice. But, it would also require either more, smaller dumps, or burn a lot of fuel- lots of trips to the dump as opposed to one big round by a truck. Of course, reducing the amount generated is always good, but not universally applicable.
Wow, I cannot believe the comments I have read about this video. Burning man is an incredible experience that half of you could not hope to withstand. The amount of hate generated at the tips of your fingers is staggering.
I came into this video skeptical- Black Rock City is both temporary and attracts people of a certain cultural and ideological bent. I remain skeptical. The banning of the car, beyond raising ethical questions of public vs private power, is not feasible in most American cities- the American city is designed and zoned for the automobile. They aren't 'walkable'. This would also disenfranchise rural people, like myself, who aren't served by public transport and are far from needed amenities.
That's why many cities have public transportation. I'm a suburbanite myself and work in the city. I take the bus and the subway and it is faster than driving my car to work. Most office workers in the city spend hours a day in car jams then take up valuable city space to park their cars for 10 hours a day.
@INatalkaI Well, obviously, public transportation, long-term rezoning to allow more mixed-use zones, and other efforts to make cities more walkable and bike-able, are all laudible. My real concern is rural folk- I have to go to town to get supplies, there's no way around it (unless I want to significantly lower my standard of living- and even then, classical self-sufficiency isn't always an option for us), and that means I have to drive, and bring a vehicle into town.
But there is such a stigma attached to taking pub. transport. It's like you have to be super poor or have leprosy to get on. It's an imagined barrier that keeps many people from saving money, time, natural resources and space.
@INatalkaI That seems bizarre to me; if I had public transportation, I'd take it all the time. We've begged the state to extend the North Star line, and I've written stern letters about the lack of intercity public transport. But, as far within-the-city transport, I must admit ignorance; when I'm in town, it's with a car- how else could I get into town? It's a few hours by bike, even longer by horse or cart, and a day by foot, and I need to buy things I can't grow, make, or get from neighbors.
another example of why we need to expand our prison system. since when was dicking around and rallying around hollow "liberal" ideals a good thing? enough of this nonsense! i'm 24 and i can only hope that my peers, and moreover my future generations, will still understand that hard work and time-tested values are needed for society.
these "liberating" activities only spawn more excuses to not contribute to an orderly society.
@sfg078 Orderly societies are important to fascists.
I understand. At 24 I thought I had things figured out too (though I wasn't as far off base). Hopefully with some life experience, you will open your eyes/mind over the next 24 years and maybe question the brainwashing you were given by your ignorant daddy. See you at BM 2035
And regarding prisons - Too many of our citizens are in prison unjustly. Keep the violent ones, let the rest out to be productive members of society (orderly or not).
Yeah, no.1 thing cities should learn is: don't let diluted new age trash have any rights and keep yuppie douche bags from realizing these atrocious unicorn-esque daydreams...anybody can do acid and think well with the Vedas and Native Americans...but these are the same shit bags bastardizing the same cultures and ceremonies...rule number 1: INDIANS HATE HIPPIES!!!
...though they are hilarious to make fun of...kind of like a social special olympics team...they'll always be retarded...always...well, 'til they die I guess...and thats a good thought...dead garbage, setltling thought...
Lol, look at these comments. People are so freaking cynical. But seriously, this looks like a lot of fun. I'd love to go sometime. Man, if the world looked like that all the time, that'd be my kinda life.

1) Not goinna happen.
2) Nothing self-reliant about Burning Man. It's a convention, and like all such, it requires outside resoures to even exist.
3) Destroy the economy? Oh great. Just the idea we need right now. And please don't pretend you're not trying to manipulate people with your message.
4) There's nothing virtuous here.
5) Society already does this. Just not in such a pointless, deconstructed way.

Wow, talk about insta-hate <.< Usually you'd have SOME people defending it, but it seems EVERYONE are STRONGLY oposed to this video? o.O
What's up with that?
It's got 64 likes for crying out loud, where are the comments that DON'T think all artists are america-hating commie terrorists?
aerion111 5 months ago
@aerion111 the vid is fine, the hate comments come from idiots. US is going down because of those.

@dumbnetworks
US is going down because of feminism and racial tolerance. Not because of trolls.

another example of why we need to expand our prison system. since when was dicking around and rallying around hollow "liberal" ideals a good thing? enough of this nonsense! i'm 24 and i can only hope that my peers, and moreover my future generations, will still understand that hard work and time-tested values are needed for society.
these "liberating" activities only spawn more excuses to not contribute to an orderly society.

Yeah, no.1 thing cities should learn is: don't let diluted new age trash have any rights and keep yuppie douche bags from realizing these atrocious unicorn-esque daydreams...anybody can do acid and think well with the Vedas and Native Americans...but these are the same shit bags bastardizing the same cultures and ceremonies...rule number 1: INDIANS HATE HIPPIES!!!
altnoiseproject 5 months ago
@altnoiseproject ...just a bunch of lost people trying to create culture to make up for lack there of...bottom feeders.
altnoiseproject 5 months ago
...though they are hilarious to make fun of...kind of like a social special olympics team...they'll always be retarded...always...well, 'til they die I guess...and thats a good thought...dead garbage, setltling thought...

Lol, look at these comments. People are so freaking cynical. But seriously, this looks like a lot of fun. I'd love to go sometime. Man, if the world looked like that all the time, that'd be my kinda life.
