This notion of him being a Maverick Republican is a fiction, good media spin, just like Obama being a far left liberal. He's not. Lieberman pretty much said he'd still caucus with the Democratic party when he won in '06 but that's pretty much a lie. Now granted the Democrats in Congress haven't been worth much as far as change goes since then but still Lieberman is a GOP man, pure and simple.

The deepening of the recession is being caused by high oil prices - Obama has nothing to offer except more taxation and dragging oil execs before idiots in senate committees. McCain will talk about increasing drilling and refining and will be the next president. High crude prices have driven the recession - lower crude prices will drive the recovery.

Actually Obama is going to lower taxes for middle and lower class, so on the whole for most Americans it will be less taxes. And an increase in drilling won't have an effect on prices for what 4 years at the earliest, more likely 7 or 8. We need a better Energy policy in this country and McCain is more of the same old system that is failing. It's time for, dare I say it, a Change.

The simple threat of the US increasing drilling and refining capacity will lower the price of crude. If you want to stop the speculators, start talking about increasing the supply. To ensure lower prices in the future, increase the supply. Socialist economics has never worked - Obama won't make it work either. The type of 'change' promised by Obama is the same thinking that has exacerbated the energy problem. The time has come to put the Arabs out of business.

There isn't a quick fix to this problem. It's been coming since the Carter Administration and both Democrats and Republicans are going to have to make some hard choices. Americans are going to have to make some tough ones. The cheap energy party is coming to an end with Oil. Nuclear, Wind, and Solar are the future. We need to invest in those and not Oil. We need to get a start on the transition now, not put it off with drilling and hoping that will save us.

I agree with your basic premise that there is no quick fix, but being overly independent on foreign oil is the biggest problem right now. I disagree with going all alternative. I believe a two-pronged approach involving increasing oil drilling/refining and advancing alternative sources is the best for a short, mid and long term solution. Increasing US drilling/refining isn't contrary or in opposition to the advancement of alternative sources.

Good luck selling the left on nuclear. There's too much NIMBY out there (Not In MY Back Yard!). The trouble is the left does not understand that power must come from somewhere. They don't want water flow altered, coal burned or the atom split. Turns out that windmills don't look good and kill the odd stupid bird. Natural gas generation increases the cost of natural gas, thus raising home heating costs. Electric cars might be nice but they do have to be plugged in. More demand = more problems.

I'm in the electric utility biz and have heard it all. The latest thing is conservation (again). This ridiculous notion has failed every time, yet it still gets resurrected regularly. Trying to tell the enviro-fascists about the benefits of nuclear power is futile.

Well France is basically investing into Nuclear energy and I agree that the problems with are two-fold: 1) It's bad rep, and 2) disposal of waste products.

With Oil I don't think it's a question of places to drill so much as it's just not worth it to the companies to explore the areas they already can. I could be wrong but from what I read drilling isn't the answer, at least not even a temporary one.

If drilling would drop the price by at least 25 - 30% in two years I'd be for it. Sure the possible environmental problems are a concern for me, but if it's something that's not going to have an effect on the price of crude even during the next president's term then to me we need to spend that time and money investing in energy solutions that are gonna be around for the next 50 to hundred years because the conversion from oil is going to take decades at least. Let's starts ASAP IMHO.
