  • when they lower her voice she sounds depressed. i like her normal voice

  • As disappointed as I am by BBT's misuse of "negative reinforcement," it makes me kind of happy in a weird way that the top comments are viewers who also noticed that.

  • Psychology. :D

  • The actor who portrays Lennard also plays Mr.Piper on Good Luck Charlie! :DD

  • Look at 1:34 shes like trying so hard not to laugh

  • @MelonZephos wonder how often they had to retake the scene..XD

  • I found Sheldon really hot in this opening scene.... sorta in an evil genius d&s way... lol

  • @gigimc I agree.

  • To top comments, everyone here took psy101.

  • Glad the top rated comments have access to Google.

  • does penny own 5 accounts? =]

  • Where's the part where she catches it in her mouth?

  • We're getting smarter already.

  • 0:50 sheldons face :D

  • The analogy they use here for negative reinforcement is incorrect. Negative reinforcement is the "taking away" of an adverse stimulus to increase behavior. "Squirting her in the face with water" is positive punishment, or adding an adverse stimulus to decrease behavior.

  • @neuroticpsyc83 OMG. I was just about to post the same thing. Psych major? :D

  • @neuroticpsyc83 blablablablabla

  • @neuroticpsyc83 I yelled it at the TV when I saw it!

  • @neuroticpsyc83 It is negative reinforcement if he doesn't stop spraying her until she stops the undesired behavior.

  • @neuroticpsyc83 It's still hilarious :D

  • Mt psychology teacher showed this to us to teach us classical conditioning in my first year of college

  • @girlovesbacon MINE TOO! Go awesome psych teacher!

  • She's trying so hard not to laugh!!!! XD Hahahaa.

  • Obviously, waitressing at the Cheesecake Factory is a complex socioeconomic activity that requires a great deal of analysis and planning. BAZINGA!

  • Wish Penny was with Sheldon...

  • Pure brilliance

  • Day-um!!

  • we used this vid for a psych project....BEST PROJECT EVER!!!!

  • Genius scene here.

  • lol bad lenerd and chocolate for penny

  • ...this could work.

  • Doesn't it look like she's trying really hard not to laugh throughout this? lol

  • lmao the way he says,

    "Have a chocolate."

    Is quite hawwwt <3

    xP

  • Ok, look. He is using OPERANT conditioning, which has nothing to do with pavlov. It uses positive reinforcement, rewards, positive punishment, like an electric shock, negative reinforcement, taking something bad (like electric shocks) away, and negative punishment, taking something good away, in order to train behavior.

  • love how Sheldon says BAZINGA 0:18 out the corner of his mouth like that :') aww Sheldon <333.

  • Actually, electric shocks are still positive reinforcements....

  • @yauyuso I would still rather have sex, or chocolate

  • @yauyuso Technically, positive punishments.

  • ROFLMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Oh why don't we directly go on to Pavlov? =D

  • @GattinoSproetje because pavlov trained dogs and that would be calling her a bitch in a joke that hardly anyone would understand

  • @cheeseshoes True!

  • i wish netflix puts this up for instant, I really wanna get into it

  • Technically, employing punishment isn't negative reinforcement. Negative reinforcement occurs when a negative stimulus is removed as a result of behaviour, thereby making that behaviour more likely (ie. reinforcing it). If he was to cause her some sort of continuous discomfort that was removed when she behaved "correctly," that would be negative reinforcement.

  • @STNeish cooooooooooooooooooooooooool

    im pretty sure everyone cares.

  • @tipttt Sarcasm? I was just providing some information for the sake of interest. Take from it what you will.

  • @STNeish coooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool

  • @tipttt LMMFAOOO

  • @STNeish This is what we humans call a comedy show. Discussing the pros and cons of behavioural modification is, as can be evidenced by other comments, of no interest.

  • @spacecowboy5000 I'd say the fact several people have been discussing it is evidence that there is at least some interest in the subject.

  • @STNeish cool story bro

  • @STNeish woooooooooooow. thats so interesting.

  • @STNeish You mean like harmless electrical shocks?

  • @CocoaNutCakery If the shock was continuous, then yes. However, if the shocks occurred in response to behaviour, it would make that behaviour less likely. That's PUNISHMENT. Reinforcement always makes behaviour MORE likely.

  • @STNeish I am fully aware. However, people (including you) talk about how Sheldon was using that term improperly.

But it's entirely possible that you've misinterpreted Sheldon's words.

  • @CocoaNutCakery Again, it would require Sheldon to administer a continuous shock to Penny for it to be negative reinforcement. That's not likely what he meant, especially considering the alternative suggested was punitive water squirtings, but I suppose he really didn't say one way or the other.

  • @STNeish nerd :)

  • @iateurwifewfavabeans And proud of it! :)

  • @STNeish he already does that without knowing cuz sheldon is such a pain in the ass, if penny behaves the way he like he won't be like that anymore so he is kind of using this negative reinforcement ALL the time :p

  • @STNeish No doubt that this is a regular misconception. I think the show was trying to not dwelling into too much technicality and hence avoided confusion, even in doing so sacrificing some accuracy. Squirting water indeed would be called "positive punishment" rather than "negative reinforcement."

  • @STNeish Bazinga!

  • xD YES. I love this guy. Too much.

  • LOL my class used this for a BF Skinner presentation...BBT in class is awesome :P

  • Build a better girlfriend? I'm surprised they haven't done a show where Howard tries that- the closest thing we got was the robot hand

  • I personally find Penny's laugh adorable!

  • hahaha he fucking succeded!!!

  • sheldon rządzi ;-p

  • i'm soo like sheldon XD

  • People really do respond to the environment, I have seen people take on the attitude problems of television; a war movie, then they must be aggressive; a sad moment, we get strange sadness; the attitudes and words of the character influence current feelings and statements. Our drama of environment is never-ending.

  • Pennys been reduced to a puppy.

  • friki ^^(L)

  • she wanted to laugh so bad

  • Sheldon is a little freaky sometimes.

  • LOL BAZINGA

  • bazinga

  • hahah bazinga!

  • hahaha, rapeface indeed :) sheldon is ma nigga

  • pause at 1:43 sheldons rape face.

  • @kawa1spaz Sheldon's too epic for a rape face :P

  • chocolate?

  • Someone's probably already said this but negative reinforcement is NOT punishment. Negative reinforcement is the removal of bad stimuli (eg. if you're ill, you take some medication, start feeling better and learn to do this in future).

Anyway, I thought I'd get that out there because it bothered me when I saw this episode. Although I know the writers make mistakes, this is a really obvious one.

  • @PsychedelicGroove had to post a reply on facebook cus this system woyuldn't accept it

  • @PsychedelicGroove well they only have a physicist on set, not a psychologist =/

  • hahahaha =)) thnx for the vid men!

  • Oh my god, Sheldon's awesome.

  • omg this is hilarious the way he got pennys voice low XD even she was trying not 2 laugh lmao

haha i love it when sheldons voice is rly low at the endd <3

  • LMAO that's hilarious

  • classical conditioning actually deals with reflexive behaviors, like pavlovs experiments with making dogs drool, NOT voluntary behaviors

  • That's where the original theory comes from yes, but behaviorism's ideas of positive and negative reinforcement are very much applicable to any behavior. Voluntary behavior is definitely included in that.

  • Aha!

  • I figured out what was happening. I want chocolate now.

    I love Sheldon!

  • That smirk Sheldon gave at the end says it all =P

  • Look at sheldon's face at 0:48-0:51 : crazy scientist and that smile in the end means : BAZINGA!

  • Oh come on! It's just a tv show for crying out loud, stop trying to show off your psych knowledge, it's very unbecoming. Or at least find a better place to do it besides a comment wall on YouTube. I mean really! I love psychology as much as the next guy but you're being a little ridiculous there kiddo.

  • Well, I prefer seeing these types of comments rather than the 80% of stupid crap idiots write on Youtube. And BTW those comments weren't directed at you, so why does it bother you so much? Live & let live.

  • @mjcrawford90 lol, Thumbs ub!

  • @mjcrawford90

    Look, it's Penny.

  • LOL

  • Parlov experiment?

    hahahaha XD

  • Do you mean Pavlov?

  • Just to be technical for a moment... "Negative reinforcement" is rewarding something by removing an aversive, not by applying an aversive (like squirting water or electric shock). If you're going to use the terminology of operant conditioning, use it right!

  • No, it's operant conditioning. He's trying to change the strength of a behavior, not form an association between two stimuli. (Or maybe you were joking; it's hard to tell what the "hahaha" is for without punctuation.)

  • @StacyBS oh yeah u are correct. i wasnt joking when i posted i dont think but now that u say that i believe u are correct :)

  • @StacyBS

I have a feeling that the thing that Sheldon is referring to when mentioning R- is the Lovaasian thing in the 60s or 70s when he used electrical strips on floors as a means to provide noxious stimuli to autistic kids in order to get them to behave less autistically... a somewhat unethical thing, in my book.

but your definition of R- is spot on.

  • @psychobollox *Cough* Un-necessary *Cough* nerdy *Cough* Behaviour *Cough.* Excuse me.

  • @TheCookieKing95

unnecessary stupidity.... i don't supposee you can help it, can you?

don't answer that. it was rhetorical.

  • @psychobollox How was that an exhibit of stupidity?

  • excellent!
