  • Mark is still the Terminator of bassguitarist :-)...Rulez ! Nr 1 !!! This song makes all of my body move..fantastic !!

  • Mark King is truly the Jimmy Hendrix of the bass guitar!

  • Wow, on par with Stanley Clark!

  • @hurry2014 Not on par. Stanley isn't all that. I have three of his albums and they're boring as hell. Any video of his I pull up on youtube he's just playing that same old riff from School Days- he's a one trick pony. He could never play what Mark just played up above. He has a reputation because he was one of the first slapper but I haven't really seen him do much with it.

  • @Inzo42 You haven't seen Stanley Clarke Live then. Granted some of his albums are duds(Hideaway's good), but he is arguably the best bass guitarist alive. He's as not popular or as well know as say Les Claypool or Flea but he's better. And forget Schooldays, that's his best known song not his best, by far.

  • click on 4:02

Thats the definitive sound of Level 42 :)

    What other band does that!?

  • Why doesn’t this get more views? These guys are great musicians and the bass sound and tempo to this version are excellent! Sadly people would prefer some Saturday night voting crap, with some sad ass saying their singing this song for a long lost dead relative compared to this! Thank you Level 42, you’re real musicians.

  • awesome..................

  • I'm know I'm way off base, nevertheless somehow my mind flashed to Frank Zappa without all the verbal crappa.

  • I'm afraid om mr psyko bassman.

  • easily one of my favorite songs. What's interesting to me is comparing Les Claypool's style with Mark's. Les has such an economy of motion that he often seems to be not moving enough for all of the notes he's playing. Mark, on the other hand, is just flailing about it seems a wonder he has so much precision in his playing.

  • @barkon , I agree with you there. It is strange how much Mark moves about when performing. Look at him at 1:23 for an example!

  • @barkon I agree, though there are mistakes. In certain passages his thumb catches two strings (most noticeable on the intro and outro riff), and he occasionally misses a pop plus other very minor "misses".

But christ, I'm not having a go; it's a hard tune plus he's in the moment buzzing his tits off and sweating his nads off, like you say, flailing about. It's amazing it isn't a car crash. Outstanding stuff.

  • 3:50 - "No talking please!"

  • He's easy to miss behind all Mark's antics, but damn if Phil isn't one completely ridiculous disco jazz explosion from hell! Most underrated drummer ever to have packed Wembley. If I could jam with anybody, he'd be it.

  • @keeef66 1000% correct

  • Mark looks like a young version of Angus Young!

  • Nothing beats the sound of that Jaydee... apart from another Jaydee

  • Brillliant - they were at the top of their game then.

  • The definition of funky methinks.

  • this is great

  • Lang ist es her, haben dieses Stück vor Jahren mal gecovert. War echt schwer machte aber ne menge Laune es zuspielen.

  • Thats what you call pure music

  • Wow... That bass!

  • nice? INCREDIBLE BEst EVER

  • Phil Gould was an assistant in a shop of printers lol

Great version and MK is so wet!

  • Mark, você toca bem pra kraio, mas que você é feio é !

  • Pô ele é bonitinho, rs

  • What ever happened to shows like these..?! Nowadays we have to settle for Idols... :-(

  • Grandiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!

  • my comment was intended as a response to lidesnowi

  • Yep, Phil Gould on drums :-)

  • Phil Gould on drum ?

  • lmw289:

It's a Jaydee bass, made by John Diggins in the UK.

Go to John's website; there's loads very comprehensive info there about the Jaydee basses Mark played.

  • I know someone told me once before on here, but someone please tell me what kind of bass Mark's playing on this video? I know he's played Alembics. But, WHAT is playing in THIS video? Anybody?

  • I think that is an Status.

  • It's a JayDee

  • To bad they went down the commercial path!

  • They had to earn a living for their families just like all of us. Many artists that make highest quality material face an irony -high level of specialisation of their art allows few people to understand it. Many great artists and musicians have to earn a living outside of art or music. They did their time in the pop biz and proved their fitness for that job with repeated successes. Now they can go back to jazz thank God for us and for them. They have never written any low quality song.

  • the best bassist mark king and victor wooten 4ewer

  • YEAH!!!! :)

  • LOL the tamborineist is krys mach the session saxophonist for level 42..he's just doing a bit cos no saxophone in this one....saves him just standing there doing nothing.level 42 getting their money out of him...lol

  • who is the tamborinest? that guy's skills are just sick.

  • loool xD I had my problems to even spot him :D

  • @wyattdawg LeRoy Williams

  • keyboard and bass-wise this is my favourite version. sounds similar to the version on "a physical presence" as well

  • Besides "Theme to Margret" this is the Song why I started playing bass 20 years ago. A friend of mine made me listen to "The Early Tapes" - this and Herbie Hancock´s "Headhunters" album changed my life forever ! Simply beautiful and timeless anyway, after all this years I´m still listening to this music, love it so much !

  • thanks for the life story, ace.

  • Mark King and Mike Lindup Made this band the way it was. I'm not in any way trying to detract from the Gould brothers: they were awesome, too!!! I just can't understand why there are so many -6's to rate them. I've been a fan of Level 42 for over 20 years and will never shy away from being as such! Level 42 will always be awesome to me! Sorry if anybody dosen't think the same.

  • bass at 1:19 bogonkadongo

  • This is just too cool for school :P

  • lol keyboard guy :D way to go!!!

  • he looks a bit to happy!lol

  • Mike's solo is nothing short of amazing!

  • But he makes it funky! Boon with anything but a LP is nothing short of immoral!

  • this is boon gould on guitar ,alan murphy replaced boon he was the one with aids ,sorry

  • 1:08, couldnt be more funky.

  • worlds greatest instrumental!

  • Such an original track..

Boon deserves a slap for that vest thing though !!!

  • ooooooooooo thats FUNKY!

  • This is just like the Early Tapes !! How cool is that !!!

  • Phil realy goes ballistic here.

  • This is the real deal...L42 at their very best!!!

  • What can i say...this is how we love Level42. MK on Jaydee, Phil on drums, Mike on keys and Boon on guitar...playing a classic Mr. Pink, as my friend Simon Cowbell would say. Absolutly loved it!

  • best song !!!

  • tasty stuff

  • I'm going to see them live in October and I hope they play all the early stuff like this one. If you like this there's a pretty good version on the live album A Physical Presence, released way back in '84. Get it now!

  • Kolbola, I'm just catching up with all these Rockpalast uploads. Incredible. Thank you.

  • I always liked this solo by Mike lindup. Guess I have seen this legendary concert at least 20 times on mt friends old video during the years
