I just love how the official gave the red flag and that ol' D seemed to accelerate and run another 20 - 30 feet just to spite him. I wonder if he'd flashed the flag again if the ol' beast would've found another bite of traction and kept on going?.... Sometimes I wonder if old mechanical things really do get a will of their own...... Spooky
Bloody hell! What a brave old tractor. Talk about never say die! I suppose the radiator has the capacity to provide continuous cooling when working hard at say, ploughing or discing. 8.3L of petrol engine! No doubt a product of the days when American farmers paid just a few cents a gallon for fuel. Farmers in NZ at the time got tax-free petrol for tractors, but it had a dye in it to deter use in cars. A cop, stopping a farmer, would look under the hood for tell-tale staining around the carby!
awesome vid, there was ine in a neighboring town and it was neat because they had two sleds and for some reason drew names of the tactors to pull with each other and a old 1935 D and a 19?? allis 170 pulled against each other . the allis look like it was gonna win but the old D wouldnt give she keeped chugging along out pulled the allis by 5 feet
Nice pull ! ! ! I grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin. Our neighbor had a "D".....I used to ride on the fender (as a little kid) when he pulled a three bottom plow. Still remember it like yesterday. That one had a gasoline tank for starting, and kerosene for running.
Two-Cylinder Magazine and John Deere as well as all the collectors I know refer to these tractors as "EXHIBIT A" MODEL "D" TRACTORS. If you call it by its proper name we would have a better understanding of the information you are trying to convey. "XD"....must be a Minnesota thing. Yes these tractors had the new three speed transmission and larger engine which was rated at 42 HP,weight about 4,000 pounds. Glad to hear you out pulled 15,000 pound, 141 HP model 5020.
As good as the old "D" tractors were they never made one that would out pull the JD 5020. Oh, and by the way, JD did not tag their experimental tractors with an "X" prefix. If your serial number plate is this way, Deere did not do it.
Ah, yes. Great old tractor. We had a 1939 D back home when I was a kid. I loved that thing. As far as starting it is concerned, with the starting petcocks open, you could easily flip the flywheel with one hand.
john deere continued to build after 1960 until they ran out of parts..I saw a 1961 530 it had hood signs similar to the 4020 neat tractor..most are rare though
In my home town they have a tractor pull on the 4th of July week end and this old farmer brings his John Deere D to the pull and pulls the sled. Last summer (2007) he was 97 years old. He lost his right hand in a cornpicker many years ago and has a hook, somehow he starts the "D" by hand.
Haha! Love those old twin-cylinder Deeres! Think they produced peak torque at about... oh, 3rpm. Could count the flywheel revolutions before they'd ever stall!
That guy with the flag must be used to MM pulling. Flipped his flag WAY before the old D was done. NICE video! Thanks for posting it! They are great to watch in the winter time!
Yeah, the two-cylinder JD's just do not give up! One other nice thing too- if you have to work on the engine in the field and you were required to remove the cylinder head, then a huge rainstorm appears out of nowhere- no problem at all, just crawl into one of the cylinders and wait the storm out!
Thanks for posting this! Long live the Johnny Poppers!
That's why the farmers wanted to buy the John Deere two cylinders!! They never give up!! Man, they give you goose bumps! John Deere made the same engine from 1931 to 1953 and the farmers were still mad when they stopped.
The rated engine rpm for this particular year was 900. That combined with 501 cubic inches/8.2L (stock engine displacement for this year of D) would equal a little bit of torque to be sure.
why do u only see dualstacks on D's? why dont we put then on every two popper?
A small cross pipe would do the job of evening out the backpressure

I agree with you! Those were tractors, built to last and nothing else sounds like them. They give me goosebumps to hear them hammer away. LOL

Steiner tractor parts makes a dual exhaust manifold for a D.
