  • why do u only see dualstacks on D's? why dont we put then on every two popper?

A small cross pipe would do the job of evening out the backpressure

  • I just love how the official gave the red flag and that ol' D seemed to accelerate and run another 20 - 30 feet just to spite him. I wonder if he'd flashed the flag again if the ol' beast would've found another bite of traction and kept on going?.... Sometimes I wonder if old mechanical things really do get a will of their own...... Spooky

  • Why in the world did the old Tard flag the run at 1:02 ?

  • Bloody hell! What a brave old tractor. Talk about never say die! I suppose the radiator has the capacity to provide continuous cooling when working hard at say, ploughing or discing. 8.3L of petrol engine! No doubt a product of the days when American farmers paid just a few cents a gallon for fuel. Farmers in NZ at the time got tax-free petrol for tractors, but it had a dye in it to deter use in cars. A cop, stopping a farmer, would look under the hood for tell-tale staining around the carby!

  • That guy waved the red flag about 40 feet too soon! lol

  • omg het lukt hem ook nog eens met z'n pop pop pop motertje

  • pop pop pop pop keep on keep on keep on.

  • awesome vid, there was ine in a neighboring town and it was neat because they had two sleds and for some reason drew names of the tactors to pull with each other and a old 1935 D and a 19?? allis 170 pulled against each other . the allis look like it was gonna win but the old D wouldnt give she keeped chugging along out pulled the allis by 5 feet

  • this torque,fantastic

  • glad no ones really pay's mind to the flagger. He wanted him to stop when the D was still going

  • Nice pull ! ! ! I grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin. Our neighbor had a "D".....I used to ride on the fender (as a little kid) when he pulled a three bottom plow. Still remember it like yesterday. That one had a gasoline tank for starting, and kerosene for running.

  • Running that slow, every power stroke counts and this one doesn't miss a lick. Excellent runner. Thanks for posting.

  • Sure pulls hard.

  • nothin like an ole poppin jonny

  • I swear those old Deere twins produce peak torque at about 2rpm!

    What a great sound.

  • look at that old girl just keep going and going.

  • That sounded really heavy at the end there.

  • Those 2-bangers always seem to go about twice as far as you think they would!! The best Deere's they made!

  • I agree with you! Those were tractors, built to last and nothing else sounds like them. They give me goosebumps to hear them hammer away. LOL

  • Nice seat.

  • nothing runs like a deere

  • The flagman was a little anxious there.

  • Mnwelder,

Two-Cylinder Magazine and John Deere as well as all the collectors I know refer to these tractors as "EXHIBIT A" MODEL "D" TRACTORS. If you call it by its proper name we would have a better understanding of the information you are trying to convey. "XD"....must be a Minnesota thing. Yes these tractors had the new three speed transmission and larger engine which was rated at 42 HP,weight about 4,000 pounds. Glad to hear you out pulled 15,000 pound, 141 HP model 5020.

  • Mnwelder,

As good as the old "D" tractors were they never made one that would out pull the JD 5020. Oh, and by the way, JD did not tag their experimental tractors with an "X" prefix. If your serial number plate is this way, Deere did not do it.

  • wow, i sware old D models have about 3/4 million foot pounds of torque

  • Ah, yes. Great old tractor. We had a 1939 D back home when I was a kid. I loved that thing. As far as starting it is concerned, with the starting petcocks open, you could easily flip the flywheel with one hand.

  • My dad owns a 69 JD 2 cyl diesiel, its sounds like a freight train. :)

  • no 2cyl after 1960

  • john deere continued to build after 1960 until they ran out of parts..I saw a 1961 530 it had hood signs similar to the 4020 neat tractor..most are rare though

  • Whatever year it was, I know for sure its a 2cyl.

    Must be a 59 then.

  • it says its a 49

  • I was talking about ours, it's way different than this one.

  • In my home town they have a tractor pull on the 4th of July week end and this old farmer brings his John Deere D to the pull and pulls the sled. Last summer (2007) he was 97 years old. He lost his right hand in a cornpicker many years ago and has a hook, somehow he starts the "D" by hand.

  • who needs lots of revs??

  • Haha! Love those old twin-cylinder Deeres! Think they produced peak torque at about... oh, 3rpm. Could count the flywheel revolutions before they'd ever stall!

  • That guy with the flag must be used to MM pulling. Flipped his flag WAY before the old D was done. NICE video! Thanks for posting it! They are great to watch in the winter time!

  • Yeah, the two-cylinder JD's just do not give up! One other nice thing too- if you have to work on the engine in the field and you were required to remove the cylinder head, then a huge rainstorm appears out of nowhere- no problem at all, just crawl into one of the cylinders and wait the storm out!

Thanks for posting this! Long live the Johnny Poppers!

  • Now thats funney rite there.

Never thought about that. Ill give it a try on my 1937 A.

  • That's my Dad!! He's so proud of this video... and I am proud of him! I Love you Dad!

  • Wow that is a beautifal restoration some one put some serious hours into that one

  • That's why the farmers wanted to buy the John Deere two cylinders!! They never give up!! Man, they give you goose bumps! John Deere made the same engine from 1931 to 1953 and the farmers were still mad when they stopped.

  • Now that tractor has some balls!

  • Hey, who makes the dual exhaust setup? How much are they?

  • Steiner tractor parts makes a dual exhaust manifold for a D.

  • Thanks

  • *laughs* Gawd, those old Ds could sure pull! Maximum torque at about 3rpm!

  • Hello and thanks for the comment.

The rated engine rpm for this particular year was 900. That combined with 501 cubic inches/8.2L (stock engine displacement for this year of D) would equal a little bit of torque to be sure.
