Again, the space needed for free-range life is simply not possible for the ammount of livestock we have right now. And also what if a life-threatening decease breaks out in free-range farming, there may be a chance we never find out right? Opening slaughter houses deals with the problem at the wrong end. Over population of pet animals like cats, dogs, and horses is a PRODUCTION problem not a disposal problem. Cats and dogs don't go to slaughter but the do end up in shelters where they are killed and incinerated. Maybe the proslaughter people feel that's a waste of meat too? People eat dogs and cats in other parts of the world so why would that be any less acceptable than slaughtering horses?

The problem here is not the slaughtering, but the transport of the live horses to slaughter. A number of horses are bred for consumption, just like a cow or sheep. The likelihood of someone's competition horse going for meat is very rare, mainly due to the regulations regarding medical treatment. A horse can't go for meat if it still has drugs in it's system.
And seriously, horses don't have the same emotions as humans. Their behaviour is completely different to ours.

@AntiSpeciesistWorld I guess there is no other way to deal with vast ammounts of cattle/livestock. Again, the space needed for free-range life is simply not possible for the ammount of livestock we have right now. And also what if a life-threatening decease breaks out in free-range farming, there may be a chance we never find out right? At least now we can determine if something's wrong with the animals, and cure it. So there are pro's and con's to free-range, more con's though, in my opinion.

Morgage payments might go sky high, meaning choosing between paying for your house and loosing horse, or horse and being homeless. Some ponies can live over 40 years.

I understand that you people would reject horse slaughter, because they are beautiful creatures. But what happens now? Since slaughter is outlawed in the U.S., the horse market crashed (due to other reasons also), and now what do people do with old, useless, horses? They will many times ditch them on the road, not wanting to pay to board, not wanting to pay for feed. I will probably get a bunch of crap for this, but be real. Not all slaughter houses use such cruel ways, many are more humane.

I've actually called my horse meat butcher, and the slaughterhouse in Mexico that he gets his horse meat from and they both said that the horses are killed in safe and controlled environments by skilled and friendly slaughterers. I give my animals a life in grassy pasture room to roam and a dignified death.We do the slaughter here at home to avoid stress. given medical care when needed.We also use every part of their body, to honor them for their sacrifice for us.nothing goes to waste. Opening slaughter houses deals with the problem at the wrong end. Over population of pet animals like cats, dogs, and horses is a PRODUCTION problem not a disposal problem. Cats and dogs don't go to slaughter but the do end up in shelters where they are killed and incinerated. Maybe the proslaughter people feel that's a waste of meat too? People eat dogs and cats in other parts of the world so why would that be any less acceptable than slaughtering horses?

whats your plan for these horses? do your dogs and cats like to eat. Its just part of life. The slaughter has been shut down for some time now and look at all the horses suffering. the prices have hit rick bottom and now instead of a quick death, they stand out in dry lots and die a slow death. thanks for adding to the pain.

The problem here is not the slaughtering, but the transport of the live horses to slaughter. A number of horses are bred for consumption, just like a cow or sheep. The likelihood of someone's competition horse going for meat is very rare, mainly due to the regulations regarding medical treatment. A horse can't go for meat if it still has drugs in it's system.
And seriously, horses don't have the same emotions as humans. Their behaviour is completely different to ours.

Your spelling sucks and not all the horses that are slaughtered are raised to be pets.... there are farms which raise them just for Meat stock.
If it did not happen there would be a larger number of dangerous and unhealthy horses in the Equine industry. The horse meat industry is around for a reason. Because people breed for no reason and the useless racing horses. Stop racing and back yard breeding and you will be set.
