Looks like you have trouble starting the right engine on that DC-3 Did you have fuel mixture control set at richest setting? Looks like that engine must burn some oil on start-up, which I assume that the oil pressure is slow in coming up. I could see the blue smoke from the right engine's exhaust.
This airplane was created in wartime out of need to serve a war effort. It was built like a shick bithouse because it had to be tough and supremely airworthy as a cargo plane that could get out of its own way. Keep it flying for historical purposes, and it will last a hundred years. Maybe more. Try that with a 757.
@Walt554 Rgr, good call. To be honest I don't know enough about them at first look, except someting is different about the enging cowling on later variants. Just thought it was really cool to see one in Hawaii. The same company operates Beech 18s throughout the islands.
If I'm not mistaken, this is a Super DC-3. Note the longer fuselage (ahead of the wing) and the bigger engines / cowlings. I believe those are the same 1,000 hp engines as on the old B-17 Flying Fortress. At any rate, it's a great sound and beautiful plane. Thanks for posting the video.
The DC3 is incredibly tough. Even after 60+ years of service its flown all over the world in and out of DIRT strips, hopping through puddles and serviced "al intemperie". Airbus will never have that kind of record. Love those radials!
@lilpep116 This aircraft was introduced less than 30 years after the Wright Brothers' first public demonstrations. More progress in the first 30 years than since.
this DC-3 has two wright cyclone R-1820 9-Cylinder radials right. The R-1830 have a larger engine cowling so these have to be wright cyclone radial engines. I wish they would make all radial engines Fuel Injected would be alot more reliable too
If you want to have a plane crash , travel whit a DC3,DC9, Dc10 or MD80 .They are flying deathtraps. And NEVER fly whit a Comet , they break up in mid air.
That's a silly thing to say. The Comet doesn't fly passengers anymore, and while it did break up because of the square windows, that was resolved. The DC 3, 9, 10, and MD 80 are perfectly safe when maintained, just like any other plane.
Ummm excuse me but the DC-3 has an excellent safety record. They were originally designed in 1935 and many are STILL flying more than 70 years later. The Airbus safety record doesn't even come close. There is even a company that converts DC-3's into turboprops. If the DC-3 was an unsafe plane I doubt there would be a market for the turbo conversion.
you are completely wrong, airbus safety records could not compete with the DC-3's. Why would people still be flying these today if they were unsafe, out at my airport we have a DC-3 and i would not feel unsafe in it.
Like the classic 1970s mercedes saloon cars still in service over rough terrain all over africa. If it's not too fast, the parts don't break. Relaxed...

This is an R4D--8, ie super DC-3,
Yea it has the 1830 cyclones on it, and the main gear fairings too for increased speed,
It has the downsized DC-7C type tail too, and the trimmed elevator's also,
This was what the DC-3 should have been all along,
Kind of a hot rod DC-3,
they are really cool to watch take off,

Thanks! Great! Looks like a Super DC-3 to me. See the vertical stabilizer at 2:00 and at the cowling flaps and landing gear doors.

Yes they use to crash very often too , these old douglas planes. Airbus seems more safe and reliable.

@dmc081 it isnt really, form what ive heard its a bit like shooting an AK-47. As long as youve had decent training, you can fly it....I think....

@Dmasterisin probably. Most DC-3's are..well...its like they lost track of time. XD some are working to carry cargo and people as bush planes!
