I was in Katoomba with my 3 children. We started the tail to the Castle Ruins after we did the train. Little did myself or my father know before we started that it really wasn't such a great idea with a 5 year old and 7 year old boys. My 11 year old daughter was legend. We did turn back after about an hour. Then when we saw where we would have ended up I was glad we had. We will do that hike the next time we are in Australia. However, it was the most beautiful scenery.
