BMW tried so hard just to make this bike "different/standout" from the rest. In my eyes this bike looks hideous as far as styling goes. The front end reminds me of those ants from that Disney movie Bug's Life. I'll stick with Ducati, this bike is wack.
yah this might be great because this is bmw... great engine... but honestly for the over all look.. its ugly... unsymmetrical looks(bad) exhaust(worst)... if i where to choose id go for cbr 1000rr(mpg, looks, price, maintainance, and durability is better)..

Great vid...very informative! Your camera work makes me dizzy though. Why is it necessary to hold the camera 4 inches from the V he is describing to see it? Stand back so we can see what the hell he is talking about. And who films informational vids upside down??
Didn't get any of the optins... Not sold yet on the abs and traction control... I'm still a little old school in maintaining control and feel of bikes..... Back back at you, Be safe.....
@Dan frederiksen....... I've been riding for over 30 years and the most dangerous element of riding is the murderous attitude of car drivers. I've been ran off the road countless times by drivers who are reading, texting, shaving or putting on makeup while they are trying to drive. Not to mention the ones who simply have their head up their ass and refuse to share the road with bikers.
I just wanted to say that you are right. I just had crash 2 month ago ,the car driver for no apparent reason (non that i saw) decided to hit the brakes. He stopped instantly and left me with no choice than to hit my brakes and suffer crash.
After the crash he said quote: "I didn't want to run over a CAT".
Not to mention that police always think it is the raider's fault when they are involved in crash.
Your description of most of car drivers is flawless.
@bmw1000rr I've only been riding 1 year and even now had the same problems. I kicked someones car on the road, while moving, when they ran me off and then blocked me. Probably a stupid move but they did deserve the dent.

Beemerkay I have a question. Do you think this bike Will be COmparing with the Japanese Big 4? Like the Ninja ZX-10R R1 CBR 1000RR GSXR 1000 Or do you think it will be compared with the Italians? Aprilia RSV4 Factory. Ducati 1198 S MV Agusta f4 1000 The Japanese Litre bikes are mostly under 10k While the Italian Litres are at least 20k and up.
Hi, Yes the S1000RR is compared to the 4 Japanese Superbikes. Actually MCN UK already tested these 5 bikes and selected the S1000RR as the best sportsbike for 2010.
@beemerkay This S1000RR is awsome, I've seen the dyno graph between the 2010 S1000RR and the 2011 Kawasaki ZX10R, all I can say is WOW, the power curve is absolutely amazing.
@mistabiggz16 the BMW is 13k which is the same as the Japanese liter bikes(they arent under 10k) and it will probably do much better then the italian bikes because it is made with about the same high quality at a lower price
my local dealer has one in stock and the salesman invited me to take it for a spin this weekend but im afraid to.....because i know i might just leave there light in the pocket lol
I wonder what the horsepower is on the dyno @ the wheel, cause it is certainly not 193, also sometimes people talk for the sake of talking it seems, he says "Particularly in this class where so many bikes look virtually identical" If I'm not mistaken in my perception of asthetics not one single motorcycle in the "class" that this bike is competing against looks like the other. Aprilia, Ducati, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Honda, KTM and Yamaha. I like this bike, just hope they listen to Corser and Xaus.
holy fuck. i can't get over the numbers this thing comes up with!! i am literally shocked. christ, and here i was thinking that the jap superbikes would always lead this class for performance and value. well done BMW
This isn't a novelty bike. its the best Liter bike I've ever ridden. It has everything you want. Ride quality , performance, fit & finish. Its the real deal. I like the distinctive styling even though it may not be everyone's cup of tea. A lot of the sport bikes tend to look like clones of one another. At least BMW is tying something different to set themselves apart.
I know this bike is new and its got novelty factor but c'mon the design is way too out there. Who let the headlights and taillights go to production like that?
im buying one, motorsport colors, and will put LANSHRK on the tag. i guess ill trade the gixxer for it. 13,800 is a great price, i was expecting to see 20k or something
What a perfect bike (sory for my english, I am french). The designers makes good work, I love the diference under the oposite side, great job.
I've had to stop my studies of product-design (no more cash), but my dream is to work for BMW. All theirs bikes are perfect! Great German quality, nice Design, for me the BMW'design is an icon of product design.
Better than Japanise, English ant Italian Bikes, the S1000RR will be the best choice of GP bike.
@TrY2LieAgain Nice bike too, but I prefer the german design...
The VOXAN were wonderfull too, do you know VOXAN? It was French bikes, build in my birthplace). Now, VOXAN is die, victim of bike discrimination in France: 100HP max, police and gendarmerie everywhere, taxes, governement anti-bikers... (fuc*ing Sarkosy).
For example: Imagine I buy the S1000RR, for the same cost of the one sold in german, ... 180kg and ONLY ONE HUNDRED HP !!!!! The half of the power...
The bike is very impressive, can't wait to try it out. One thing is for sure, BMW wants their share of the market. Hopefully they have had the right input while building this thing. Previous 1200/1300K's from them have been "touring" bikes, not racers. Looks great though.
What 1200 size bike is really a racer? I have a K1200S and ride a friend's K1200R and these are not touring bikes. They aren't race bikes either but neither is a Busa or a ZX14. With the K12S you get a street bike with race tires stock and the rear is a respectable 190, adjustable suspension stock, 0-100mph in about 4 seconds. Man, 2nd gear gets to 95mph at redline. I talked to Nate (see video response above) and he said compared to the Honda, Zuki, and Duc the BMW put down linear power.
I respect the power that this thing makes, and the engineering that went into it, but it's just ugly. I like uniform (SYMETRICAL) fiberglass wrapped bullet, not some lop-sided headlights and more gills than a fish.
For the price this is the bike to have. Its only slightly more than any of the big four Jap bikes and less than the 1198 series. Granted, the maintenence will be more expensive than the Japanese ones, but probably about the same as Ducati. And if you trust Japanese engineering, you should know the GSXR1000 isn't and hasn't been the best liter bike for a while. Most people won't even notice the differences in the similar liter bikes on the street anyways, get what you like.
@turbofx10 i agree with u great bike to have all the respect for them and thier riders but i will stay with my yamaha R1, might not be the best on technology and stuff but thats me what i think.
If it's as good as the article I just read says about it, then I will own this bike within two years unless something even more sophisticated and in the same price range comes along.
How would you guys compare this to MV Agusta's F4 SPR??? I mean performancewise the bmw will win but the looks of the F4 SPR is great. This new BMW bike is truly something different.....This bike is the only nice looking bike i can compare to the SPR as far as design and styling...
From a distance (only saw an early model at the Chicago show in Feb), this thing looks and must be the BOMB. Can't wait until they come out. If looks kill, we're all dead. Don't we all get tired of the same thing over and over. Love Ninjas and CBR1000s, but so glad the Germans got into the game!!!
My father and my uncle just ordered there S1000rr or S1000r they ordered it june 18 on a friday they say that they are probably the 1st people in America that ordered this amazing bike. I hope they don't get killed by this "THING" which can go 200 MPH.
I just saw this bike yesterday with Nate Kern. I love the uniqueness and the engineering that went into it. And it is l-i-g-h-t ! I posted a short video response. I haven't ordered one yet, but VERY tempted. I am amazed that there is no marketing for this. No TV ads, no spots on anything. Showing yesterday was intimate to say the least. Some duc guys, bmw guys, no jap bike guys. Too bad. BMW needs to do a little advertising.
Love the review, commentary and the bike's exceptional just standing still. Can't wait to see it reviewed in motion. Well done Shiva for getting this close this early.
Design is just great except right hand side rounded hibeam headlight. But the power and weight numbers Oh god! magnificant. Tail light is awesome to. Remember one thing about BMW products....RELIABILITY and BEST CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY not to mention platinum and diamond jewel like fit and finish. 193 horsepower stock Eliminate three way catalityc converter and install full titanium race Akrapovic , tune ECM and easy you can and up with 210HP CAN U FEEL THIS ADRENALINE BROTHERS AND SISTERS ?
HA BMW has beenracing and building superbikes before the Japanes even thought about building motorcycles!! They have always been about cutting edge technology!!!
Great review but Weird bike. You compare to ducati 1198s , Aprilia Rsv4, Cbr1000rr and R1. BMW needs to learn a lot more about super bikes. Honda with abs is lighter than the bmw. All four also have a lot more aftermarket support and better racing heritage. You do not make a ugly bike just because you want to make it different. Bmw should just stick to RT. LT and GS.
Thanks for your comment. But you got your numbers all wrong. Honda's ABS unit is about 25 lbs, BMW's complete with harness is only 5.5 lbs. BMW S1000RR with ABS is lighter than Honda CBR1000RR. Honda with ABS wet is 461, BMW is 455.
Keep in mind this is BMW's very first year into virgin Superbike territory and I think they have done an amazing job considering. Give them a couple of years and they'll own this market too, just like they own the Enduro market.
I agree about the first year of production. I just wish BMW also priced its bike as a first year of production. I was comparing Honda and Bmw weight on street.( which include norms like aftermarket exhaust. levers, powercommander, etc). You have to give Honda few grand more in after markert because BMW is few grand more. Under $15k Honda will smoke the BMW. Under $20k Honda will smoke the BMW. Under $30K Honda will show its racing heritage and shame the BMW
The new BMW S1000RR will be priced similar to Honda CBR. This is not a 20 grand bike, even though it should be and it certainly looks it. But BMW is pricing it within the CBR1000RR range, maybe just a few hundred more.
Until unless its a few grand less this bike is set to be a failure. Few grand more is ducati 1198. You cannot use first year of production as an excuse when it falls short and not consider it when it comes to pricing the bike. Anyways i still think GS and RT's are best in class. However bmw needs to learn a lot about superbikes before they can charge more than honda and yamaha.
Don't agree. What sets the price is components. MV Oro's asking price is $40K. You think it's that much because they have learned more than Honda?
Sorry, your point is invalid. This bike at about 14K is a bargain. They should sell it for 20K. Check out the components alone, also the power to weight ratio.
yes, the styling is controversial, but it will grow on people. I think BMW wanted to make sure their new superbike doesn't blend in too much with the Japanese.
Also, things to keep in mind that, the Japanese own the supersport and superbike market. The Euro bikes currently haven't put a slightest dent in that market.
MV sales are so slow, that they don't even register. Same with Aprilia. Ducati sales a few more, but too low to matter. BMW is hoping to change that trend.
I hope you're right because, even though I own a Japanese bike, I am in the market for a new (and hopefully) non-Japanese bike. As you know, there's nothing wrong with Japanese bikes. And it's not even that japanese bikes have no "soul" as some say (not their fault they sell well and are common). But it would be great to see some other manufacturer other than Japanese and Italian to dominate some races.
This bike kicks all others aces looks performance mpg durability well done well done BMW don't trash it till u ride it

DanFrederiksen 1 year ago
@DanFrederiksen Well, I've never heard the term "donor cycle." And I work with doctors.
Second, as a general rule, motorcyclists are better drivers. They know their vehicle more and need to evade (choice word here) other cars.
And if you still want statistics, 8.1% of cyclists get into a fatal crash. but 66% are caused by OTHER DRIVERS.
How's that for not smart?

I think this is the first superbike I've fallen in love with!

The bike is very impressive, can't wait to try it out. One thing is for sure, BMW wants their share of the market. Hopefully they have had the right input while building this thing. Previous 1200/1300K's from them have been "touring" bikes, not racers. Looks great though.
popeyepanther 2 years ago
What 1200 size bike is really a racer? I have a K1200S and ride a friend's K1200R and these are not touring bikes. They aren't race bikes either but neither is a Busa or a ZX14. With the K12S you get a street bike with race tires stock and the rear is a respectable 190, adjustable suspension stock, 0-100mph in about 4 seconds. Man, 2nd gear gets to 95mph at redline. I talked to Nate (see video response above) and he said compared to the Honda, Zuki, and Duc the BMW put down linear power.

It's called a Ducati 1198R.

this has to be one of the most beautiful bikes ever made!
love it.. i want one in the green/yellowish color :D
i'm not really a 4-in-line person, I prefer V-twins and L-twins (DUCATI!! (L) ) but this one is amazing

I respect the power that this thing makes, and the engineering that went into it, but it's just ugly. I like uniform (SYMETRICAL) fiberglass wrapped bullet, not some lop-sided headlights and more gills than a fish.
AllenBomber 2 years ago
BMW should put headlights with angel eyes.. too bad Yamaha has already stolen them :(
Atoweha 2 years ago
For the price this is the bike to have. Its only slightly more than any of the big four Jap bikes and less than the 1198 series. Granted, the maintenence will be more expensive than the Japanese ones, but probably about the same as Ducati. And if you trust Japanese engineering, you should know the GSXR1000 isn't and hasn't been the best liter bike for a while. Most people won't even notice the differences in the similar liter bikes on the street anyways, get what you like.

I agree. The S1000RR is an engineering and technological marvel. But I think it's just so ugly... haha
I've never seen one in person though so maybe I'll change my mind.

tis true, but ze germans are still better, they've been doing this longer and better than japanese

193 horsepower stock Eliminate three way catalityc converter and install full titanium race Akrapovic , tune ECM and easy you can and up with 210HP CAN U FEEL THIS ADRENALINE BROTHERS AND SISTERS ?
pinablonde 2 years ago
Well let's hope that 'cutting edge technology' slaton01 is talking about will put BMW on the SBK podium this year.
marcopolorsa 2 years ago
It will. Already 7th at Monza in the first year is pretty good for a brand new bike and team.
number1Schumacherfan 2 years ago
And I sure hope it will, because BMW is offering an alternative from the usual manufacturers, and we should welcome that!
Take that from someone who owned 2 BMW motorcycles, but never really liked them.
But I appreciate the effort and investment from a manufacturer who wants to step out of its image of making boring bikes for old farts.... :)
marcopolorsa 2 years ago
HA BMW has beenracing and building superbikes before the Japanes even thought about building motorcycles!! They have always been about cutting edge technology!!!
slaton01 2 years ago 2
Great review but Weird bike. You compare to ducati 1198s , Aprilia Rsv4, Cbr1000rr and R1. BMW needs to learn a lot more about super bikes. Honda with abs is lighter than the bmw. All four also have a lot more aftermarket support and better racing heritage. You do not make a ugly bike just because you want to make it different. Bmw should just stick to RT. LT and GS.
gwalia4 2 years ago
Thanks for your comment. But you got your numbers all wrong. Honda's ABS unit is about 25 lbs, BMW's complete with harness is only 5.5 lbs. BMW S1000RR with ABS is lighter than Honda CBR1000RR. Honda with ABS wet is 461, BMW is 455.
Keep in mind this is BMW's very first year into virgin Superbike territory and I think they have done an amazing job considering. Give them a couple of years and they'll own this market too, just like they own the Enduro market.
beemerkay 2 years ago
I agree about the first year of production. I just wish BMW also priced its bike as a first year of production. I was comparing Honda and Bmw weight on street.( which include norms like aftermarket exhaust. levers, powercommander, etc). You have to give Honda few grand more in after markert because BMW is few grand more. Under $15k Honda will smoke the BMW. Under $20k Honda will smoke the BMW. Under $30K Honda will show its racing heritage and shame the BMW
gwalia4 2 years ago
The new BMW S1000RR will be priced similar to Honda CBR. This is not a 20 grand bike, even though it should be and it certainly looks it. But BMW is pricing it within the CBR1000RR range, maybe just a few hundred more.
beemerkay 2 years ago
Until unless its a few grand less this bike is set to be a failure. Few grand more is ducati 1198. You cannot use first year of production as an excuse when it falls short and not consider it when it comes to pricing the bike. Anyways i still think GS and RT's are best in class. However bmw needs to learn a lot about superbikes before they can charge more than honda and yamaha.
gwalia4 2 years ago
Don't agree. What sets the price is components. MV Oro's asking price is $40K. You think it's that much because they have learned more than Honda?
Sorry, your point is invalid. This bike at about 14K is a bargain. They should sell it for 20K. Check out the components alone, also the power to weight ratio.
beemerkay 2 years ago
I will agree to disagree. Put a ducati 1198 , New Rsv4 and MV right next to the bmw and ask people what they think about asymmetrical styling.
I was comparing to honda because BMW like honda has always been about engineering.
I guess in the end sales figures and race track will tell the true story.
gwalia4 2 years ago
yes, the styling is controversial, but it will grow on people.
BMW is hoping to change that trend.
beemerkay 2 years ago
I hope you're right because, even though I own a Japanese bike, I am in the market for a new (and hopefully) non-Japanese bike. As you know, there's nothing wrong with Japanese bikes. And it's not even that japanese bikes have no "soul" as some say (not their fault they sell well and are common). But it would be great to see some other manufacturer other than Japanese and Italian to dominate some races.
