@SabbraCadabra789 I think the problem with Gary was that he sounded great in the studio and really struggled live when it came to hitting some of the higher notes he performed on the albums. I'm not gonna be too hard on him here because he re-joined the band only 48 hours before this Reading gig after Bonnet had an epileptic seizure during the warmup gig in Sheffield. Gary had to literally save the day here.
@seriusline Why the fuck do you even bother post that, If someone knows enough about rock to search desert song from Michael Schenker then they obviously know who Jimmy Page is, and the majority loves Led Zeppelin like I do, but posting that in a Michael Schenker video just makes you look like an idiot
@AXEFLYERFV pff i dont have any clues.. i know that it's a great solo.. and when the solo starts the guitar player comes out from a tent and play!!! p.s. it s not november rain!!!
@markos96netfight Look up a band called Badlands. I know they had a desert video, I can't remember the name but it should be one of the first videoes that comes up.

Barden is thé singer for MSG. He's different, unique way of singing and Michael Schenkers' different, unique way of playing just fit together so well.
you're welcome,I appreciate your comment ,thank you much!
check out the video response ,I reposted this video with wider screen, don't know why youtube makes the video come up with the 2 black stripes on each side!
i was at this tour when they played glasgow(built to destroy tour) am i righ in thinking that derek st holmes on rythm guitar was actually michaels guitar roadie
I wouldn't go that far. Yes Schenker faired much better in their solo careers. But Uli with the Scorps and Michael with UFO are pretty even in my opinion. The 2 of them are my favorite guitarist all time. And I have heard tons. The 2 live albums both bands made as their final albums are second to none as far as hard rock live albums are concerned.
Schenker is not far better than Uli. Very even.
Both had superior tone, phrasing, speed, melody and song writing ability. Second to none.
i used to own UFO's Force It on vinyl... that and Obsession are probably their best albums with their classic lineup... incredibly influential group--especially on Iron Maiden--who never really got their due...
I too have been looking for some Michael Schenker with Graham! I found one a few months back but singing only, no footage, just pictures. Can't locate it again. They were truly a great match.
I have also meet Schenker on several occasions and have many items autographed by him, including a Jap mini lp box set and a legends of rock DVD signed by him & Uli Roth. I have seen UFO 3 times with Schenker, twice with Chapman, Twice with Atomic and twice with Moore who I saw on the NYAH tour at BB kings in NY, had seats front and center, Phil was dripping sweat on us. Plan on seeing them this fall at least a couple of times. Saw MSG a 1/2 doz. times, Waysted twice.
On the contraband album Michael does a cover of ALL THE WAY FROM MEMPHIS, I have exchanged Emails with Ian Hunter and he has answered them personally, I just contacted him and suggested that after his show on 6/24 he should drop by and catch the MSG show that night, and perhaps get up on stage with Schenk for a rousing rendition of ATWFM, I figure Mike must be a MOTT fan because he covered a MOTT tune. If it does happen I WANT CRED. Wouldn't that be awesome ?
I have been a UFO FANatic since FORCE IT,I didn't even know who they are, I just picked up the LP, I suppose the hypnosis cover caught my eye. I noticed it was produced by Leo Lyons, who I recognized from Ten Years After. Hell, took a chance and bought it, went home and put it on the turntable, instant love. Bought NHP when it was first released. Been a MSG fan since day one.I have Everthing by these guys, including, sign of 4, waysted, moog/way,the plot, the odd trio, the pete way solos etc.etc.
MSG. Will be at the 6/24 show in New York,NY. At the Blender, hope to catch Ian Hunters "free concert" at 7:00 in Rockefeller Park and mosey on over to see MSG later in the eve.
Hi there AXE-man. Loved the video. I've seen UFO and Schenker live many times back in the 70's and 80's. They were great to see live. Many high times when you could party at a concert. I have the entire albums on vinal and one newer CD called Sharks. Thanks for putting out great stuff. Keep on rockin.
As much as Barden couldn't come close to Bonnet on this album (which was the last Schenker solo record I liked), Ray Kennedy was much worse. After seeing Schenker with Kennedy, the debate after the show among me and my friends was whether or not Kennedy was gay. Way too lightweight for the hard rock genre.
All I can say about your comment is that you don't know what really happened about this times & I can understand how it is so easy to judge but when you know the real facts about how Barden ended singind this song that it is obviuosly not in his range & then Kennedy who it was never a Rock singer but a different kind of singer, you might understand the situations that went on back then & not jump the gun that fast!
Saw MSG so many times in Europe in the 80s, all the way thru McCauley. And yer just flat wrong if you think Barden can't rock the balls off a bull. Wrong. Wrong.
He really destroyed his voice in the Assault Attack Tour singing Bonnet Songs and the songs written for S&D were out of his range too! Derek St. Holmes had to sing some of the high parts live.
The Shuffle BRILLIANT. Who on earth would give their right arm to be on stage with them, even if it was just playing spoons, thats if you dont play youre spoons in your right hand. It was a time I was into Rainbow and they were getting more wooly with every album and thought MSG were better. Great Sound on this youtube too. Thank you x
MSG then were better as blackmore lost the plot long ago.If you want a good laugh watch any Blackmore Night stuff, while I would say look at Deep Purple Space Truckin Live on You tube, yes Richie smashes guitar etc but the energy and tension in purple in the set is amazing.Pity essentially blackmore got lazy and lazier each album especially bent out of shape zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Is the Reading Festival performance? I remember being at Reading, pretty close to the front, and everyone was flabbergasted when Barden came on stage, cos everyone was expected Bonnet. I think the Sheffield thing must have only happened a day or two before and no-one in the rest of the country knew what had happened. Then it got reported in Sounds, and for weeks afterwards readers wrote in with ever more lurid (and fictitious) accounts of the Sheffield gig.
Reading Festival was 1982. I still have the brilliant recording of the live set.
Barden's voice was best suited to Schenker's style - shame about the politics. MSG never recovered from losing Barden - numerous line-up changes is testament to that.
Look forward to seeing Schenker and Barden team up again for the Scorpions gig at Hammersmith this Saturday.
Gary is OK. This is the version I heard 1st in 84. Gary`s voice is rough and raw but it gives nice contrast to Schenker`s distorted tone.Or maybe some-kind-of fills it.Like stemma-voice,you know. Michael is the master of making that V sound so flesh-meaty-nasalwhatever.Hope he`ll play many decades more! Wir alle liebe Michael so viel.Gut,besser,Michael.
Listen, Schenker wanted to make his own music and have his own band. When he left UFO he knew he was the man and to play someone else's guitar parts would never be what he wanted. He said it felt very odd to him. You can tell he is a very emotional player and wants to play his own musical thoughts and not someone else's. Thank God he made MSG.
I was at the gig the night bonnet was sacked it was at the sheffield union he came on stage wrecked and couldnt sing he was booted off stage and the gig was played without him and it totally rocked
I went to the Sheffield show on the assault attack in 83, Bonnet had been sacked a few days earlier when they played a gig at the Leadmill for dragging on the rythm guitarist which pissed off Schenker, Bardon was brought in, I think the drummer was Ian Paice?, the bassist was Chris, the support was Vanenberg, who later was guitarist for whitesnake, that evening was surreal, amazing songs, classical rock and I still play the album as it stands up against any great rock album.
Who, Graham or Michael? They both had alchool problems, unfortunately Michael still have them...Graham seems to have won this battle.Bonnet wrote the lyrics.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Are you fuckun kiddin me Bonnet never wrote a song fro MSG go ask Michael yourself. Bonnets name appeared in the credits because he fucking sang the songs. Graham cant write a song he doesnt know where to begin. Hell Mike had to offer him a Magazine to think of a song, lyrics and words. Thats why Mike fired him plus he dropped his pants during a gig...ala homo. Bonnet is a gay.
This is one of my favorite Schenker songs...and what a line-up...thanks for posting it! I would really love to hear some live MSG with Graham Bonnet singing...any out there?
Unfortunately Bonnet's presence in MSG was so brief it is very hard to find any footage of him with MSG,If I ever happen to get that lucky or blessed to find it I'll post it here!
I think it goes farther back than that...to Chris and Teds days in the S.A.H.B. That's where they first played together...check them out...Alex Harvey was a genious...NEXT is one of my favorites and as good a song as any for an introduction to them. And check out the funky moves in Delilah...lol
You're not cracking up,It is,at a faster phase, also listen to (Arbory Hill) from UFO obsession and MSG Tales of (Mystery) and there are a few more, that's how great Schenker is he can make songs out of his songs!
A Nightmare: Barden singing Bonnet...But this is the Assault Attack song he was able to sing better but he was really forced ..He lost his voice in 83-84 an quit for a while.
me parece increible .

Barden's voice was best suited to Schenker's style - shame about the politics. MSG never recovered from losing Barden - numerous line-up changes is testament to that.
Look forward to seeing Schenker and Barden team up again for the Scorpions gig at Hammersmith this Saturday.

did u fall for it as well as me i thort schenker barden wer the support band an it never happened gutted!!!!!

Yep I fell for it. But Uli's guitar playing made up for it (shame about his singing); and the Scorpions were superb. A great show.

Geoff tate is in a class of his own. But still think Bonnett is one of the best.

the singer totaly ruins it for me,shenkar should of hooked up with ozzy, when he had the chance,
evelskunny 3 years ago
Listen, Schenker wanted to make his own music and have his own band. When he left UFO he knew he was the man and to play someone else's guitar parts would never be what he wanted. He said it felt very odd to him. You can tell he is a very emotional player and wants to play his own musical thoughts and not someone else's. Thank God he made MSG.

Great stuff! I read an interview where Barden said he had difficulty singing the Graham Bonnett songs - but he did fine here.

Gary Barden has always been my favorite MSG singer. What he lacked in actual talent he made up for in attitude and energy.
imthedorf1964 3 years ago
I was at the gig the night bonnet was sacked it was at the sheffield union he came on stage wrecked and couldnt sing he was booted off stage and the gig was played without him and it totally rocked

I went to the Sheffield show on the assault attack in 83, Bonnet had been sacked a few days earlier when they played a gig at the Leadmill for dragging on the rythm guitarist which pissed off Schenker, Bardon was brought in, I think the drummer was Ian Paice?, the bassist was Chris, the support was Vanenberg, who later was guitarist for whitesnake, that evening was surreal, amazing songs, classical rock and I still play the album as it stands up against any great rock album.

this song explains perfectly the mood of a drunk soul looking for a way to escape towards news horizon...

Who, Graham or Michael? They both had alchool problems, unfortunately Michael still have them...Graham seems to have won this battle.Bonnet wrote the lyrics.

They are cracking up about it. It's a joke in a way. It's a move the Scorpions do, a little gesture.Schenker owns!
kingofthedeep 4 years ago 2
