It was moses to blame not o'malley. O'maley tried to work it out but typical for the City of NY and moses they blew it. Moses was a very difficult person.
O'Malley made tons of money in the move so i don't think he was really too broken hearted about going to LA. He is in the Hall of Fame but Gil Hodges is not. Guess they don't look as much at integrity as they are suppose to when they vote someone in. Gil Hodges had impeccable character.
It is horrible that Gil Hodges is not in the Hall of Fame with Robinson, Snider, Reese, and Campy. He was as much a part of that great infield that won the WS in 1955 as them but because he was a quiet guy he didn't get the recognition he deserved. Please all Gil fans write to the Vets Committee at the Baseball Hall of Fame, 25 Main Street, Cooperstown NY 10036 and let them know you support Gil for the Hall of Fame. He has come so close in votes so many times.
The 1957 season was probably the greatest era of baseball in New York. During the 3 previous seasons from '54-'56, all 3 baseball teams in New York had each won a championship. Sadly, 1957 was also the unexpectedly painful and cruel end of the era.
I wish I had been alive to have seen it. I would prefer that era to even the Ruth/Gehrig or DiMaggio/Gehrig years.
@vivascargill Probably about how O'Malley cheats at cards, even there. I'm sure Bob Irsay and Bob Short (who moved the Minneapolis Lakers AND the "new" Washington Senators) would agree. Jeffrey Loria, Art Modell, Norm Green, Peter Karmanos and Howard Schultz, you're still alive: Repent!
@UncleMikeNJ yeah you are right! BTW who is left? The Duke Carl Branca I think--as for the others there is no forgiveness no repentance--Koufax but I am not sure he was a real Dodger--I know he played in Brooklyn
@vivascargill Of the 7 starters, only Duke Snider remains. Keeping in mind left field was continually rotating, they've actually survived a long time: Gene Hermanski, George "Shotgun" Shuba, Andy Pafko, and Don Zimmer. Pitchers, Don Newcombe, Carl Erskine, Ralph Branca and, if you want to count him, Billy Loes. Preacher Roe was the most recent one to leave us.
@UncleMikeNJ - Billy Loes just passed away on July 15th. Loes actually threw a terrific game in game 6 of the 52 series.... It is often re-broadcast on the MLB channel. He shut down the Yankees until Berra homered in the 7th .... then later that inning came the famous "ground ball lost in the sun". Loes should have on that game - instead he's known as the "the guy who lose a grounder in the sun" BTW - the afternoon Oct. sun DID pour though the stands at eye level that day.
@wjb4341 Carl Erskine has often defended Loes by pointing out the Ebbets Field sun problem. But Loes also predicted the Yankees would win the '52 Series in 7, and said, "I was misquoted, I picked them in 6 games." Of course, Newk was in the Army (Korean War), but so was Whitey Ford. And Jerry Coleman, if he'd been at second base instead of Billy Martin, the Dodgers might've won that Game 7.
Omalley had choices and did NOT have to move at that particular time. He could have chosen to keep trying but couldn't pass up the freebies LA was giving him that money hungry devil bastard!! And Moses that old scumbag didn't help!!
@brooklynbum66 I have been watching interviews with Caro (not just Ghosts of Flatbush) I have hatted O'Malley for so long and I almost vomit when I have to say it really was that Bastard Moses--those damn highways O'Malley could have waited but for how long ah waited or not he was a greedy bastard--Moses offerred flushing meadow should they have taken it do you think? I hope both of them are rotting
Ebbetts Field was no older than Fenway Park or Wrigley Field, which are still big league parks half a century later. I agree with Uncle Mike...O'Malley wasn't pushed out; he ran out, and he got Stoneham to take the Giants out too. Los Angeles gave him the parking and concessions, even oil rights under Chavez. Loyal fans, screwed again.
No one wants to hear this, but if it wasn't Walter O'Malley it would have been somebody else at Chavez Ravine in all due time. Kay O'Malley was a great owner's wife. Her husband was a boozer much like McPhail before him. Peter O'Malley brought some real class to the organization and just ran out of time. To say Dodger Stadium was built on a Jewish Cemetary must have really been some kind of schmoozing at L.A. City Hall back in the 1950s. Just ask Kenneth Hahn................
If Walter O'Malley was such a "visionary" for moving the Dodgers west, then he should have been "visionary" enough to get around Robert Moses. He was a "visionary" when it came to further lining his pockets, and he didn't give a damn for the fans. He never installed water fountains at his Temple of Greed in Chavez Ravine, because why should anyone drinkn water for free when they can buy drinks at the concession stand? O'Malley tried to stay in Brooklyn like Bush tried to stay out of Iraq.
The move began when O'Malley tried to secure a new stadium. Ebbetts Field was in a state of serious disrepair. Robert Moses blocked him from acquiring a parcel of land that was available in Brooklyn, instead offering him a location in Queens. Of course this didn't work, as the team was the BROOKLYN Dodgers. At the same time, Los Angeles had contacted O'Malley with FREE land in an attempt to lure a team out west. And the rest is history...
o'malley and stonahm claimed they were losing money even though the dodgers and giants were one of the richest teams in the bigs, but they could make more profits in cali-forn-i-a

@UncleMikeNJ ---excellent point. Both O'Malley and Bush are in the same pathetic, unscrupulous class---one corrupted by money, the other by power

The Dodgers never really moved to Los Angeles. They are just on one helluva extended road trip.
