Love that bass line, great use of a steel guitar( kenny was the best)..... I used to have this LP, and now I'm sorry I got rid of it...... can't find it anywhere now.
WOW - WOW, Man that brings back memories. The energy that man (TOM) and that group (RED RIDER) could play, 18years ago WOW. AS Tom is a year or two older then me. I wish that we could re- catch the wind and go for the ride again. It's what I call good clean rock.
tom cochrane...jesus how many perfect albums this guy have? /canadian LEGEND ...ive sen him well over a dozen times now ....lousy video for a album i will play forever
EXCELLENT!!! This reminds me of the first weekend we had MTV!!! Love the eerie keyboard intro(Reminds me of Halloween!!)!! When Tom Cochrane had a hit with "Life Is A Highway" in 1992, it made reminisce for this and "Lunatic Fringe"!! Kurdtss, YOU ROCK!!!
Extraordinary song !!!! First time I hear thr whole intro LOL. I wonder what they're doing now. Gotta find out right now.Anybody has a live version of HR?
As far as siam and Neruda kick fuckin ass. I wish these guys would have made more albums like that. These guys were severely overlooked. They could have been Pink Floyd big if they would have kept it up.
Thanks for posting. Everytime I hear Red Rider, I think of the glory days of MTV...coming home from high school, grabbing a glass of milk & turning on the MTV to see videos such as this. Long ago, but still close to memory in the brain.
@adkpeakboy How many MTV channels do you have in the states now? we have about 6 much music channels up here in canada, they are all garbage now too except much retro.
The one I saw was on an old Laserdisc called Picture Music...I was disappointed to see this version of the video instead when I searched for it years later.
The drummer, for some reason, dominated the camera for most of the second half of the video. Weird.
one of those songs that i had just forgotten about. red rider --lunatic fringe and power (strength in numbers) are the two i recall most. in fact searched power and stumbled across human race --great song.
Regardless they are one of the greatest bands in canadas history. they have sooo many great songs and he has sooo many great solo songs too. i put them up with tragically hip and guess who any day
great song! should be inspiration for all going through challenges. knock me down but i'll get myself back up and i'll get myself back in the race again. pedal steel guitar's awesome
One of the best albums ever made by anyone. I wrote this before on this post, but I just have to say it again on this Friday morning at work when I should be working....
I have never heard this song. It is great. I like it a lot! Thanks for putting this up here to be re-discovered and discovered for the first time but many like me.
I agree with you. Even though I was still young in the 90s, I started being disconnected from the current music of the time. Couldn't relate to grunge, rap and the new dance music...
gaee 2000 you are so right, the 80,s was the last decade of great music. I believe you can tell a good decade of music by how many one hit wonders there are. And there has not been many one hit wonders since the 80's, just people taking the music and calling it their own.
@bucky468 I've owned the LP for ages, it was out on Capitol records, which I recently read is the USA branch of EMI, who handled Pink Floyd up to Dark Side, when they opted to sign to Columbia
Thanks for posting this video! This song has haunted me for 25 years. I saw it several times on MTV back in 1983 and then it faded away, outshined undeservedly by "Lunatic Fringe". It's great to hear it again after so long. All I've had to remind me of it since '83 is Tom's reference to it in the lyrics to "Life Is a Highway".
never thought i would hear that song again. can't find "Neruda" album easily, and not for cheap. not on Rhapsody either. Love the song, but forgot how bad the video was.
Great song but some questionable camera work of the band playing together. It held a long time on the drummer and then to the bassist and missed Tom singing the chorus. Ahh, the innocent days before slick video production. Kind of refreshing, actually.
used to book these fellows for concerts..every year at our college in Northern Ontario..they were an awesome bunch of guys and always put on a great show..too bad there's not more songs from their 'Neruda' album on YouTube.."Work Out", "Crack the Sky", "Can't Turn Back", "Power", "Napoleon Sheds His Skin"..all from that album..one of the most psychologically intense albums of its time..I kid you not..go and buy it if you can find it..
This is such a great album. I love Ken Greer's trademark steel guitar. I saw them play in Montreal in 2003, and it was like nothing had changed in 22 years.
One of the best totally flowing albums ever. was looking for lunatic fringe back in the early 80s, buddy bought the wrong one and i have been happy about that ever since. In northern MN.we really got into canadian rock. I'd like to see Napoleon sheds his skin.
I remember seeing this video and Lunatic Fringe on MTV back in the early 80's. First time I'd ever heard a pedal steel used in rock music. I like this song much better than Lunatic Fringe.
David Gilmour uses the pedal steel profusely in Dark Side (1973), like in the song Breathe, and Wish You Were Here (1975), like in the song "Shine On" (Part 5 or 6) so if you like it you can check out these songs/albums too. It is soooo trippy the way they use slide guitar like that !! I ADORE it!!!
Well first of all, David Gilmour didn't play pedal steel. He played lap steel.
There were lots of people who used pedal and lap steel in rock music back in the late 60's and 70's, such as Yes, The Grateful Dead, Blue Öyster Cult, and others.
But at the age of 9, in 1982, I'd never heard any of those bands. Back then, steel was pretty much known to me only in country music. The idea of a rock group using steel seemed so unique. I didn't know at the time it was already pretty common.
I must say that Gilmour did in fact also use pedal steel. He says it (and shows it) himself in a youtube video. Just type in "Pink Floyd's David Gilmour in Studio Playing Breath" in the youtube search and you can see it. It's also my most recent addition to my favorites so you can see it by clicking on my name and checking out my favorites.
I heard this song today on XM Radio and I was floored! It's probably been 20 years since last hearing it. It is soooooo beautiful and sooooo dark. I love it. The intro especially is reminiscent of Pink Floyd at their most melodic and beautiful. Red Rider was a very underrated band. Gotta find this CD.
I've ridden that subway...from Kipling Station...it goes outside for a bit...before hitting Islington...it's a lot of fun...riding in the front car...to see the city at night...Toronto is the greatest city n the world...
ok i know this is gonna sound like a lie but my dad is the drummer in red rider(before they broke up) so thx so much ive been wanting to see my dad on screen!!!!!
Neruda...the finest fucking acid trip I ever took was listeing to this album at level 7 through a pair of Bose 901's(600 Watts unlimited) in my house in Prince George British Columbia...if you had any idea as to the depth of the wordsand music to Neruda you'd just shake your head a hundred times saying "ya gotta be fucking shittin' me!"...yep...psychologically pefect for 'clinical' vacations...
Wow, it's been over 20 years since I heard this. Always loved it and knew it was RR, but never knew the title. AWESOME tune, thanks so much for sharing!!
A masterpiece ! Ken Greer's guitar was what needed Cochrane to solify his ALL sens all azimut songs( By the way the lyrics can be everything...even a person that goes through hard tmes like heavy drug addiction and that say what he sees, feels and triumphs with an awarness that it has been a victory and that it is not over yet ! Few Lyrics...but Naild it ! Bravo !
Awesome song! IMHO, even better than Lunatic Fringe (and that's saying something)! It wasn't a hit in the U.S. (at least not in L.A.) and I only heard it twice on the radio (both times on a syndicated show from somewhere else), but it immediately struck me as a great song! I had never seen this clip before, thanks for posting it!
Been There. Done That. Same times. Same places. How come I wasn't in your video guys? I'm sure I was nearby. Anyways, man, talk about a reflection of my experiences during that time period. Thanks Guys.
Been a long time been trying to say thanks for this one LOL

Unusual video. Everyone in the band gets featured. Very cool song and video. It's like finding an old friend.
