I use to love watching older international tournaments as it seemed each country had their own style of play. The Russians were always high skilled where as Canad hockey was skilled but more of a grinding physical style. Now it seems that most teams play the same style. Its too bad as I enjoyed watching the old soviet teams play
The Russians were certainly more conditioned the the Canadeian players. The Canadian players worked in the summers to make ends met (older days) where Russian players were mostly all military paid players.
I remember watching a Tretiak training segment on TV back in the 70's. The man was an incredible athlete in addition to being a superb goaltender. Placed a great deal of emphasis on leg strength and overall conditioning. I imagine his goaltending school is pretty tough.
There is no denial that both Canada and USA are major hockey powers. For example, the last time all the best players in the world met, at the Torino Olympics, both Canda and USA proved that they are among top 8 hockey nations in the entire world. USA finished 8th, while Canada - even higher - in 7th place, right behimd Slovakia and Switzerland. Awesome!
To all the North-Americans: like an earlier poster said, NONE of the Russian hockey players were allowed to leave the country, let alone participate in tournaments like the Stanley cup... Therefore saying Gretzky is better is stupid, his entire "superiority" is based on NHL stats. If you haven't heard of Kharlamov that's different, so don't go yapping your mouth.
P.s. who remembers when the Soviet team kicked the "NHL all-stars" team ass all over the ice?
2)just because you haven't heard of a player doesn't mean they're bad OR good, it just means you're uninformed
3)goals are harder to come by than assists, last year only 3 guys had 50 or more goals, and 20 had 50 or more assists, 6 more at 49a...there are secondary assists, no secondary goals....can't get an assist unless another guy finishes but you can get a goal without needing an assist. Goals are harder and more important.
few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand(SORRY BOUT SPAM THIS REALLY FREAKS ME)
Kharlamov played a lot less games per season than Gretzky. I don't see Gretzky passing 200 points around 35 games. but you cant hate on either of em, both were amazing players.
its speculation...you cant possibly say that. It was a completely different time period its like comparing apples and oranges. And I agree that Gretzky is arguably one of the best, if not the best to play, but Kharalamov is also a candidate. But the thing is, Soviet Russia hockey team is the best to ever lace em up.
How many world champoins does Canada have? and in a row? and how many does Russia have? thats what i thought! Also gretz mannaged over 1000 points in the age of 13 against his peers, as well he still holds the nhl record for most pts in a season, and most pts in 5 years .. his greatest record
Of course, USSR didn't paly in any international competitions - including hockey - until 1948. And since 1948, Canada won 13 times, while Russia won 24 times.
i kinda agree with you and do not so im nuetral but i think that almost everyone in KHL are around equal skill most of them have played in the NHL for example like andrei kovalenko for the severstal cherepovets or darius kasparitis or alexei yashin. Its hard to compare which league is better. And back then the russians where the better players to score 7 goals against dryden back then was hard its just like saying scoring 7 goals nowadays and the soviets did that.
Yes, Gretsky was called "GREAT ONE" from his very first steps, because of the pun between the words "Gretsky" and "great". But that is his nickname in North America. Europe has its own heroes.
you have to remember that the soviet union didnt let any of their players go over to the nhl, plus 70 % of the year the soviets national team was out on training camp
kharlamov is easily better than gretzky, he could do things with the puck that gretzky wouldn't think of doing. also kharlamov is much faster than gretzky and he could shoot when at top speed, something that most players can't do. i don't know why people think gretzky is the best canadian player, in my opinion bobby orr or mario lemieux were better than him.
Gretz certainly proved that! His greatest record of all time had a crazy amount of assists
and russia rocks that doesnt make any sence at all, why is he called the "great one" but not the greatest of all time? quite contradictory so do us all a favor and shut up retard!
@skullrimer I agree, Bobby Orr is the best all around player I have ever seen (my opinion), but kharlamov was the most explosive. I always felt Kharlamov would score every time he touched the puck. Wish I could have seen more of him.
Hail Tretiak, im american of Russian decent (along with like 7 other ethnicities lol) and i too believe retiak is the best there ever was and thats the reason i wear 20 on my jersey
I agree. Tretiak was probably greatest goalie of all time. If he didn't get pulled in that 1980 Olympic game, he settles down and shuts down the net and the Soviets win that game. I'm glad we beat the USSR, but I have to give credit to Tretiak for being the best goalie ever.
This is an awesome video! Thanks for posting it. I am an American. I grew up in the 1970's and 1980's. I am a Patriot American. That being said. I love and admire the Soviet Hockey Dynasty of 1951-1991. And Vladislav Tretiak was, is, and will always be the single greatest hockey goal tender in the history of the game. Period. He is a true sports hero!
At the Olympics, I took the elevator down from the suites with Vladislav Tretiak after the Czech Republic/Russia game!

also, another important thing:
The Soviet team was by far the strongest TEAM. just like he says in the video, without his teammates he wouldn't be where he is.

Yeah. They were good players. Very graceful, quick and skillful; these soviet players were amazing.
What made their strenght was their team work. Passes and plays. Alone, together.
The Soviet team and nowadays Red Wings makes lie the analysts here who argue that most europeans can't play with energy.
They were and still simply amazing; just check out Kovalev tricks or look for some of Datsyuk dekes. Incredible hockey skills.

tretiak is the greatest goalie ever, the nhl team that got him would have won the cup every year.
But I absolutely love kharlamov. I have his soviet jersey in russian. He was the russian gretzky, no doubt about it. If not better.

Dude not everyone is EQUAL IN SKILL in the KHL, however, NHL are, and they are some of the worlds elite hockey players!
For Gretz, he'd easily dominate the Russian Superleauges, CANADA REPRESENT! THERES A REASON WHY HE IS REFFERED TO AS THE "GREAT ONE!"

Right now, Russia has been the World Champion 2 years in a row.
Historically, Canada's longest streak was 6 in a row. Russia's longest streak was 9 in a row.
