I have considered Sarah Vaughan's version the best female vocal recording of "Moonlight...", amongst a very long list of others like Ella, Billie, Jo S., Margaret Whiting. Betty's version is superb and right up there with the best.
I hear a push in that last note. But that just reminds the listener that, no, you have not left the planet. And that Betty Carter was a human being, despite the control of interval she's displayed. I bet everyone around that studio knew that this track was not going to be improved upon; and had to be pressed and shipped as is..
I love the way the great Betty Carter sings. This songs reminds me of Billie Holiday's "Autumn in New York". They both poured their heart into the song. I really feel the myself being in New York during the Autumn. I see myself outside in Vermont's moonlight.
If the planet's strife and unfairness hasn't beaten you down, if you still contain that kernel of ecstasy you remember from age 6 - 8 -10 -, as some track - the one you'll one day think of as yours - played, and if you can occasionally let kernel expand, take charge of you - who then to take charge of the ecstasy itself? Our Ms C. Some spook invented the Internet - and now Betty Carter can be heard anywhere there's a computer. Transcendence 1 -Military-industrial complex 0 - on an own-goal
Her voice IS the "icy fingerwaves", the sweet maple syrup, the meadowlark, falling leaves, soft summer breeze... The mark of a great singer is in the way their voice paints the scenery. A true artist.
There is nothing like the absolutely exquisite Betty "Bebop" Carter. Few Jazz singers have managed to do it like Sister Betty. It also does not hurt to have a song like "Moonlight in Vermont," one of the most beautiful pieces ever written.
Chillionaire, thanks for posting this gem of a song. I felt that Betty's originality was a gift and a curse. She never got the praise she deserved because of the risks she took musically, but that was part of her charm. Although, most people may only remember her as Vanessa's vocal coach from The Cosby Show episode "How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall?", I hope that more people explore her innovative, and sometimes hard to find, recordings.
Ella is and always will be incredable, but Betty's version gives me chills!!! haunting, deep down , I want to be there with "him" ( he knows who he is ) and Moonlight in Vermont...........
Folx, "The Greatest Jazz Vocalist Ever" also did a most beautiful version of this tune. OH that Jazz Singer being the one and only 'Ms. Billie Holiday'.
this is not within light years of the 'best version' of this song. Obviously you have never heard Ella Fitzgerald or her recording with Louis Armstrong.
hi samira! i just listened to your version and it was deeeelightful !!!
i can hear the influence of a "music teacher" in the way you sang. perhaps next time you can do it with more feeling from inside and less technique - this can come from understanding the lyrics and the emotions of the song...but i think when you are older you will find your own real style. i love your low notes! i can only imagine how good you will be in the future !!! you're awesome !
This is vintage Betty. This is the best album that she made, by far. I love it when she just sang melody,,, no over enunciating like she did after this album. I love how far behind the beat she is on this song,, and the arrangement. Absolutely delicious.

Absoultly haunting, singular in style and phrase, Betty Carter defines style.

She would have never won American Idol, now what does that tell you? About America.
She is my favorite.

Thanks, Rick. So rich. An age at least
we can preserve and still appreciate.
Nobody has the soul like the Black and white age of musicians and singers. The literature of music and movies do not compare.

Although a BIG fan of Betty Carter, I would have to agree with you. Ella's version is far more captivating.
