  • My friend dan made a web browser in visual studio when he was 10, he's 13 now and dropped programming all together, im dissapointed in that child.

  • @DKC1011 No big deal when you use the webview component.

  • @patiencebear he didn't though, he read like 3 books and got his uncle (who actually works in application design) to give him tips, I designed all of the buttons :D

  • @DKC1011 That's very hard to believe considering the involved technologies. But if he did he's a very bright kid.

  • @patiencebear I understand that its hard to believe, I wouldn't have believed him myself if I hadn't seen the books and been in the skype conversation at the time of him getting the tips, It was all alien to me but he was mad into, he is a better programmer then I.

  • Only a real programmer can solve this: 010011100110100101100011011001010010000001101010011011110110001000100001001000000101100101101111011101010010000001100001011100100110010100100000011000010010000001110010011001010110000101101100001000000111000001110010011011110110011101110010011000010110110101101101011001010111001000100001

  • @Thehero137 Thank you for complimenting me on my 'nice job' for 'being a real programmer' :)

  • @Thehero137

Binary to ASCII -> Nice job! You are a real programmer!

  • Check out Microsoft's Dream Spark program for students...it includes licensed versions of Visual Studio Professional, 3010, XNA Game Development programs and more. The best part about Dreamspark is that it's free. It's a brilliant marketing move by Microsoft to get people interested in game development and computer programming with their software..

  • Unreal Script > C++ > C# > Python

  • @uruguayitorip unrealscript is derived from C++ though...that's cheating

  • @mariopot789 haha i know but its a game engine language and UE3 is a beast

  • Pythons good

  • @704doon For two-dimensional games, yes. But not so much for three-dimensional.

  • @zortchik True but you can make 3D games with Python

  • haha That kid just loves to breath into the phone.

  • i learned python at school , fun for beginners!!

  • Game Maker is very good for simple games...

  • @TheKingMartin25 Don't use gamemaker, it is VERY limited in what games it can make, and it is very inefficient (slow).

  • @Liferaft09

u r sooo right, but if u wanna make a game like packman or mario, then game maker is good. im using game maker because its the only code-language i know, and i dont wanna spend a year learning C++ language or something. but i guess i learned my lesson: the strategy game im working is laggy and has a few bugs :P

  • @TheKingMartin25 actually you would be surprised i learned C++ before I started using game maker and the game maker code is pretty similar for the most part. Rendering visuals and stuff is more complex for sure but as far as the basic logic if you can make a strategy game with game maker you can handle basic C++ programming structures for sure .

  • @mariopot789

hmmm sounds interesting. my father is a good C++ programmer, and he also has some books about the C++ language, so maybe i should start learning C++ :D

  • @TheKingMartin25 xna + c# are easier than c++ :D, my aunt is a very good programmer, and she is teaching me c#, and she doesn't know it XD

  • @TheKingMartin25 yeah I would definitely look into it, while this guy CLEARLY is going on only things he heard ( and granted he does admit that several times during the video ). the main thing he said that makes sense and is important is that once you get the logic down learning the language is arbitrary.

  • @Liferaft09 i have to disagree I have used game maker and dependent on how much time you put into it you can come out with some pretty good results. look up " 100 games with game maker" and you can see some pretty cool examples of work with it.

  • CODE BLOCKS

  • look at how much vids this guy has!!!!

  • get your quality higher....

  • C# is the best medium between C++ and easier languages...

  • btw, I just thought I'd point out again what a douche this 'Chris' guy is. Focussing on the IDE? That's not the point. Besides, even if it was, visual studio is terrible for beginners since it is cluttered with features for very advanced users.

  • Theres wayyy too much smart talk in these commentts and i would like to know how to program and i dont know where to start point me in the right direction pls

  • @katlable Just PM me and I'll teach you the basics of computer programming.

  • There is no best progamming language for anyone. But for a beginner why choose C or C++? Someone who is new to programming would benefit most from having a language that's easy to make non-trivial programs, and forgiving of errors.

The most powerful and secure programming language is the one YOU know the best.

  • @ZeroDominance I began in C++ after some HTML. It wasn't too hard. You just have to have the right mindset to understand the concepts of programming nature.

  • I personally don't like XCode that much. For Mac development I'd rather use QT editor (I know it comes with the QT GUI library but you don't need to use the QT library to use their IDE).

  • This guy doesn't have a clue what he is talking about. Use visual studio? That's almost as bad as saying, 'use Windows', or, 'use a language'.

    Here are some decent options:

    Use C# + xna,

    use flash,

    use the unreal engine

make mods for games such as half life

    use java + java 3D

    use C++ + OGRE

Or if you want to start at a low-level, affording you complete control, then go for C++ or C# + directx or opengl + a good book like game code complete. But this will take ages.

    Good luck.

  • @steamednotfried

C++ is not low-level programming language, assembly is.

  • @pufixas

This is nonsense. C++ is low level relative to C#. C# is low level relative to, say, HTML which in turn is low level relative to, say, the English language. Assembly is high level relative to expressing computations as compositions of simple electrical components which in turn is high level relative to expressing computations as compositions of atoms, and so on...

  • @steamednotfried

Do you even fucking know what you are talking about?

    Relative?...

We are not talking about html because its not even programming language, its scripting language.

And what do English language have ANYTHING to do with programming language level?

  • @pufixas Is the English language not a programming language? Do you not use it to change the state of a recipient human being? The effect of a particular combination of words is not entirely determined, but it is still quite predictable, otherwise you wouldn't bother communicating. Besides, the effect of commands made to a computer are not entirely predictable; they often depend on the current state of the computer just as the effect of English words depend on the current state of the person...

  • @pufixas Also, a scripting language is a particular type of programming language. Check Wikipedia if you don't believe me. Even the interface provided by an operating system is a programming language. You use it to change the state of a computer don't you? Each mouse-click is like calling some large function. Actually, that is exactly what happens. It is like a specific-purpose, interpreted programming language

  • @steamednotfried do you have like some kind of anatomical problem? maybe there's a medical term for this but shit is coming out of your fingers and onto the keyboard to form sentences that appear like they're in english.

  • @NakedCreep OK, thank you. Here's a tip: try thinking. At least tell me what the fundamental difference is between programming a computer with javascript and changing the state of a human by talking to them.

  • @steamednotfried

    Take English for example:

The English language is a bunch of words, and inside the language exists a programming language.

What is that programming language you say? DIRECTIONS.

What is programming? Directions for the computer.

So the English language as a whole is not a programming language, but a programming language is a derivative of the English language.

You just sound like a 15 year old with a theory that just isn't scientific theory.

  • @NakedCreep OK, think about it like this: when you talk to someone, you might want them to understand something. So you want to get their brain from its current state to the state where they understand the thing. Each word will change their state in some way, depending on their current state and the other words you combine it with. So your job is to work out which combination of words will take their brain from its current state to the desired state. English is a programming language.

  • @NakedCreep If you want to think about it in terms of directions; then consider that every word gives directions to the interpreter of words in the person's brain as to how to change the brain's state.

  • @steamednotfried My tits are hard.

    Is that a direction?

    No.

And no, saying something to make a person think about it is not a direction. You are not directing them, they're processing what you are saying..

  • @NakedCreep

statement. : My tits are hard.

Command : Make my tits hard.

    Label: Gay Boy

Routine: Make my tits hard gay boy ...ohhh...my tits are hard.

    Remark : ...ohhh...

  • @steamednotfried Computers and human brains are good at very different things. A command to a person is just a suggestion and how they will take it depends on their mood.

Humans are great at fuzzy logic and converting sensory stimuli, they are poor at raw analytical skills. Imagine doing a long division problem. While you are "slowly crunching away" the numbers, your brain reads the recognizable scribbles as numbers and tells your hand how to move to write other numbers. It does a lot.

  • @ZeroDominance I dig your explanation, man.

Couldn't have said it any better.

  • @steamednotfried, @NakedCreep, @pufixas You're all arguing over nonsense!

Assembly IS a lower-level language than C++. Drop it.

  • @AndyHarglesis Actually I had dropped it. I realised that these guys weren't going to get it. Come on, of course assembly is lower level then c++. The thing is is that someone said that c++ isn't low level because assembly is lower. To which I pointed out that, by the same logic, assembly isn't low level because programming by physically composing logic gates is lower. And, also by the same logic, c++ IS low level because it is lower than c#. Pure nonsense.

  • @steamednotfried Yeah, that makes perfect sense, but I still kinda get the message that you were trying to piss them off.

Obviously composing logic gates is lower than C++ and a language like BASIC is obviously higher than C++, like Allegro is higher than OpenGL and DirectX.

The levels don't really matter overall though.

What people want to do is learn PROGRAMMING as a whole and how to do it and how it works.

  • @AndyHarglesis Ah, programming. Why didn't ya say so? If you wanna learn programming then there is a palace of gems of a resource for you. Find the video lectures hosted by MIT on their 'open course ware' website under the name, 'the structure and interpretation of computer programs'.

Or if you want a chocolate fountain of a resource, check out Richard Buckland's lectures here on youtube under the name 'higher computing'. In fact, if you are a beginner, I would recommend the fountain first.

  • @steamednotfried thanks. I just watched Richard Bucklands first class and I will check out MIT open courseware in a bit. :)

  • @cmonutube Oh, I forgot to mention, MIT also offer a more conventional first course on Computer Science where they introduce programming via Python. This one is very good and much more strait-forward for a lot of people than 'the structure and interpretation of computer programs'. They are all worth watching though, and 'the structure and interpretation of computer programs' is definitely the most enlightening when you are ready for it.

  • @steamednotfried awesome thank you!

  • lol at end stolen3..gotcha...

  • haha, lota fun when u cant afford collage

  • Do a review on runescape and please tell me wat runescape, minecraft are written in!! Pm me bakk if known?!!!

  • @MusicMaster313 Minecraft is written in Java

  • chris no offense but if you really don't have any idea what it takes to get started in game programming then you really shouldn't make a video on the subbject.

  • Dorkopolis needs slapped. I had to do Alice in my first year of college. it was pathetic.

    It's barely even programming.

If you want to make PC games that can be uploaded to websites easily for people to play I reccomend starting with either Game Maker.com (GML language)ROBLOX.com (Lua language), Byond.com (Dream Maker).

And if you really suck you can try Game makers drag and drop scripting format or Alice's drag and drop scripting format. But it's kinda lame.

    C++ isn't for beginners.

  • @nejihyuga901 fuck you noob

  • @6580006247

    :(

  • try,,,, RPG Maker XP / VX LOL

  • Sorry to say it but this guy clearly has no idea about game development, he's just shouting the only language it seems he's heard of.

If you're thinking about doing this seriously and actually making a large project with your skills, then C++ is really the only way to do it. It may be the largest (and therefore the most intimidating) but if you learn anything prior to C++, it only makes it harder.

Otherwise, Python or Java is a great place to start if you want to make a few cool games.

  • @bla1bla2bla3blah4 I disagree. C# (Used for XNA) is easier to learn and will get you into the right mindset for game development. Once you've wrapped your head around the logic and mindset for programming games, then you should move on to C++.

  • learning c/c++/ objective c. an all in one book. its quite the read

  • Notepad= oh my god!

  • Even if C or C++ are a little hard for complete beginners I recommend those to learn because they are the ones that are used in basically everything. If you learn C or C++ , you can program in everything.

  • @PivotBeguiner Agree. Its every view point of game programming.

  • @PivotBeguiner I am a script kiddie and I approve of this comment.

  • @Digiscat I am learning web development & am learning c++ just cuz I like it! Might use it the future!

  • @webDes33 I'm personally learning C++ and hope to learn OpenGL more specifically pretty soon. I'm planning to be a freelance programmer, and I'm even starting to make a game right now. :3 MLP:FiM based game.

  • @PivotBeguiner Do I need to learn any type of math?

  • @webDes33 Make sure you know your Math 12 at a minimum

  • Anyone interested in quality soundscenes for your games inbox me. i do all genres at great prices :)

  • I am 13 and i can program html, java, and c++ ! :) I have one question, im have an android phone and i want to make apps but eclipse isn't working, please help :(

  • @chickenpoper So you know C++ write me a calculator in C++ !

  • that was the police

  • I can read Chris's mind this whole video. QUIT BREATHING INTO THE DAMN PHONE

  • LOL XCode is wayyyyyyyy better than visual studio. g++ compiled programs are litterally (I tested it) 4 times faster than the VC++ comilped programs.

  • Yes, if you know zip, then a non-compiling language like Python will keep your interest up.

C++ is a harsh road to start on, but that will be your path eventually. C# is a Winblows Java-imitator, but certainly not a place to start. Getting your hands on Maya, to flesh out your characters, etc. is a must. Yeah, there are other ways, but they really don't lead you to Maya which is where you need to end-up.

  • xbox sucks

  • *cough* ps3 fanboy *cough*

  • im a PS3 FAN BOY!!!

  • I actually think Xcode is an excellent IDE. I have no idea what he is talking about

  • i need to make an fps studio thing, we can make FPS games with it, you know what i mean >:D who knows c++

  • i need to make an fps studio thing, we can make FPS games with it, you know what i mean >:D

  • Whahahaha this guy is a jOkE. Nice noobish answer man!

  • He just said what the people in the chat recomended and the said go ask a devoloper.

  • I love how on the chat in @0:36 everbody says c++ right away but I would have said Source SDK.

  • @perplemunkeeez

    Source isn't game programming.

    It's modding...

  • @Heaney5551 The sad part is that I already know that.

  • Whoever is macgamingftw @ 1:45 .... what a retard.

  • if u think 13 making a game is young search up the maker of minecraft and look at hi bio im ten an i know more than my dad in java and c++

  • asp.net, vb.net, shockwave! since i have taken those courses.

  • To develop the game he'd definatly need to know C++. He should start with the book C++ for dummies to ease him into it because it can be tricky to get to grips with. A friend of mine who also knew C++ went on to learn objective C and develped a decent iPhone app. There another guy on youtube, he didn't know C++ or objective c and he learnt and built a game in 30 days for the iphone. Search for "iphone app 30 days" he done a video diary, interesting

  • "How to start as a Game Programmer"

    Never listen to this retard.

I honestly don't know if the caller learned anything. He was saying things like "rob...rob...i just need to know the basics"

  • You can download SDL and program with C++

  • Why is all those fucking geeks in the little chat always trying to talk like they know everything.

  • Blitz Basic is the best Language for begginers !!!

  • @rosslynstationrock Long live Java :)

  • This is painful to watch. This guy really has no clue about what he is talking about.

  • @aidanm101 I am thinking the same thing. I honestly don't know wtf to say to this. This shit needs to be taken off YouTube

  • Breath Harder.....lol

  • Logic is the easy part! The hard part is data structures and algorithms!

  • honestly, in my opinion, game maker is a better program to start with, just for starting, it will help you learn a LOT of game design techniques, it is what i started with, and it helped me with programming, graphics, music, sound effects, and story building :)

  • I dont get why people like python so much >.> Starting off with AS3 (flash with flashdevelop) with a library (flixel or flashpunk) will give you a much better advantage with the ability to embed and share your game better. It is also not a hard language to learn when using a library (although pygame is a library with python).

  • @xXDeadshadowXx Start programming with python. search for a channel named ''thenewboston'' and watch ALL of the tutorials(and you also need to know lots of mathematics) then watch .pygame tutorials, that's what make games. Remember that making games is not easy, otherwise, its really hard until you know what you are doing.

  • Do you even know what youre talking about?

  • Wtf is a handy?!

  • dear chris pirillo how do I become a stock broker .. oh so I should buy a phone. ok thank you very much byyyyyyyee

shallow untechnical softcore garbage advice that constitutes nothing except wasted time

  • He said that he's need to start with something simple... with... C++!?!?!?!

Are you frikking kidding?!?! C++ Is probably most difficult programming language!!!

He dont have any idea what he is talking about...

  • C++ is a way to go. Although it is difficult (especially references/pointers), it is really rewarding. After this you had better to choose a library (DirectX/OpenGL/SDL) for your use, learn to use it (I´m currently learning to use OpenGL, difficult yes, I suck at math, but C++ I know very well). This is how I´d recommend to things. Forget XNA, Game Maker etc, there aren´t just worth it.

  • Take the ad and shove it up our ass

  • Qbasic for life haha

  • c++ is awesome for making your own games :S

  • mr ozio <3

  • @luckykingjordan you sound experienced, and I have some questions.I was reccommended to start learning programming games ( I have no experience at this point) by trying to recreate simple games on my own, like pong and tetris. I understand that c++ is mostly for 3d games, should I use c# to start out? Especially for 2d games. Or python?

  • @Gosox2525 who told you this bro? C++ is for ALL Dimensions, not just 3d. if you wanna do something in 2d, all you need is a basic knowledge of c++ and a 2d gaming engine like "Allegro". I've played around with Allegro and its easy as hell. If you need a good tutorial try "Lussikamage" has good/detailed tutorials. Overrall,Do this: step 1:Learn c++ BASICS(not BASIC, but basics of c++ itself) step 2:Learn a gaming engine(try allegro) step 3:Learn gaming theory & collision detection. combine!
  • @Gosox2525 Oh and if you need any help with c++ issues, I will be happy to help you with any problem(within the scope of my limited knowledge base), just message me.

also, there are lots of programming and gaming forums with top notch people who can help you too!

    good luck!

  • @Gosox2525 start with python. There is a youtube channel named ''thenewboston''that guy MAKES THE BEST tutorials on internet(its free!:))i'm 12 years old and i'm finishing my First person shooter(made in .pygame).Once u download python, download pygame.Watcxh thenewboston introduction to python and pygame

  • @Starcraft2Rogue Fair play to you, I'm a programmer and the earlier you start the more natural it will become to you. I'd be very proud if you were my son.

  • @keano6t9 thanks a lot dude : ) i finished my game in python but now i'm mastering C++

  • @Starcraft2Rogue

Reply to this comment for me so I remember about that program, cheers in advance.

  • @sorryunlucky Download python, after that if you want to develop games, download a .pygame extension to python, pygame. then go to ''thenewboston''youtube channel and watch Pygame tutorials. watch the first 1, even the installing one, because you may get errors. Good luck, and thanks!

  • @Starcraft2Rogue i know thenewboston is the best, i love his tutorials i wouldn't know how to program without him lol

  • @Starcraft2Rogue true i also saw but well i saw the C++ tutorials, well my standard programming language is c++ and im already into directx 10.0 syntax you should try it !

  • @Starcraft2Rogue you made your own game with 12 years? that´s amazing

  • HHHHHH HHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • Oh yeah i use unity btw

  • @luckykingjordan

    Unity is for programming noobs.

  • @DeadSteal say what you like but i just hope you don't use game maker

  • @luckykingjordan

I write my games only in C++.

  • I started learning out of a book, but i found the best way to learn was to start a project, okay, not mmorpg, but sumin u can do in 2 months, so say an fps game, learn to model a gun, to uv map it, how to make terrain, then add more models, then add an fps controller, then add scripts for gui, ammo, animation, lighting, build a game from scratch, when u need code, look it up, if u cant find the code, modify some existing stuff, if it doesnt work, go on the forums, i learnt so much this way, aft

  • #include (iostream)

    using namespace std;......xD

  • I'm trying to learn c++ does anyone know the best book for me to get??

  • @Balo103 "Sams teach yourself C++ in one hour a day" is pretty good. I got it at Borders. They have it on Amazon as well.

  • all of you game developers, I want to start game developing and the only thing i've done at school is Game Maker and that costs some money I think. I want to start with Java because Notch, the creator of Minecraft, makes most of his games with Java and it seems really good for games. Is there anything else that would be easier but as powerful as Java?

  • @EpilepticElbow maybe try c++, game maker and c++ are fairly similar, but c++ is much better. java is also good to, but games usually use c++

  • @koreanmchoi what kind of games use c++? games like the first prince of persia or new generation games? i like video games and i would like to be a game developer, but i have to learn c++ first.

  • @benitoparra you don't really have to learn c++.. game developing isn't all about programming... programming would be useless if there were no models (characters, weapons, trees, houses).. first of all you have to learn the theory.. then you can experiment... but if you are really interested in game developing then you should start by deciding on what you want to do... do you want to make graphics or animate the character or even design models? decide on something and start following tutorials..

  • @Nickolakis21aek I know that, but i would like to start making my own games, nothing big just something to begin with to have some practice so i would have to learn programming too as well as have some of imagination for the plot of the game and all that, but i'd really like to get into programming.

  • @benitoparra Then try a ready-made game engine. Go to Unity3D (.) com (all with lowercase). There's plenty of documentation on the site and lots of tutorials on youtube. Have fun developing. :)

  • i want to start programming games but i can omly code in html-__- im a good in html but not in the c line. my school sucks (hs) they dont teach us nothing

  • @nickdakiller37 html is not programming bro, it's just coding. If you're serious about this, you should look at: 1)what language is not TOO complex 2)functionality and features(how powerful and versatile stuff you can do) 3)cross-compatibility( what/how many platforms you can perform on) Hint: MOBILE DEV APPS/GAMING(Java,OBj-C(Apple uses this!)) CONSOLE APPS/GAMING(C/C++ are powerhouses!) It seems hard AT FIRST, but gets EASY! learn BASICS FIRST! "THE NEW BOSTON" has good tuts. Practice ALOT!
