As was said in the video, the most widely known commercial application was in the use of Titanium. As impressive as this plane was, it became obsolete very fast when the spy satellites appeared. The primary idea for the development of this plane was spionage
I live near Castle Air force Base- ( Atwater California ) We own the United sates strongest WW2 bombers, Vietnam war helicopters, and one of the Sr-71 Blackbirds. we also have the nations longest run way
During my 8 1/2 years at Edwards, there was no mention of any Blackstar programs (granted, Edwards is not Groom or Papoose Lakes), but NASA was and is testing an outer atmospheric, hyper-sonic spaceplane prototype.
The SR-71 was, and still is, the fastest air breathing aircraft ever built. Some cockpit footage shows the plane easily slipping thru MACH 3, while the pilot is only pushing about half throttle.
Well, the SR-71 throttle quadrant is different to most 'fast jets.' The AB range starts mid-way through the quadrant. Most of a sortie was flown in AB. You wouldn't get much more than about 0.9M at full MIL, so AB was required for supersonic flight. Even during air refueling you could be power limited taking a full load, requiring full MIL on one engine and min AB on the other. What you saw was advancing from min AB upwards.
FASTER? optional satellites with X and gps technology are the norm for black projects to star wars and end conflicts.....but all that weaponry is not only there to protect but to entertain,

That could buy me a joy ride on a SR 71 or a russian new fighter jet.
Dude, that's a bit racist...but you do make a point...
The actual reason the named the A-11/SR-71 "Black Bird" was in fact two reasons: 1) The plane was the only one at the time that was black. 2) It was a secret plane and all secret projects are refered to as black projects.
Thats not a fair comparison. The X-15 is rocket powered, the SR-71 was a jet. Besides, NASA still flies the SR-71, the air force doesn't fly the X-15 anymore.
If the definition of a plane is: "An object which is able to fly by being supported by the air, or in general, the atmosphere, of a planet." the clear winner is the X-43. The X-43 has reached 12,144 km/h or Mach 9.8.
The fastest manned aircraft is the X-15.
The fastest manned aircraft, capable of taking off under its own power is the Sr-71/A-11.
PS. although the Space Shuttle has a top speed of ~28,000 km/h and fits "my" definition of a plane it did not reach that speed in the atmosphere.
It went 6400 Km/h and it's not a JETplane..It is a manned (250Kn thrust) rocket and was purely experimental in the 60's. This was also never intended to catch missiles with.
Johnson was such an idiot for divulging this information at this time. At the time of this news coference this information was some of the msot highly classified information in the world. Why he let it be known to the world is beyond me. Jerk.
The US government (not Johnson) released this information to the world for a very good reason. If you think about it for while I'm sure you'll realize why?
The SR 71 Blackbird isn't a bomber anyway! It was built as high speed, high altitude spy plane.
Also...do you think the military or government would retire this place without having a superior replacement? U can argue that there isnt a need for a plane like this and that satellites can do it, but not in real time!!!
I assure you we have a pulse jet spyplane in the air and operational!!!!
Exactly. For example the F117 flew for around 9 years before the public knew about it, just think of the kind of classified stuff their cooking up these days!lol
nah theres nothing over mach 7 i mean its probably possible in time but at the moment nothing big enough to transport a human in is faster than i think the blackbird yeah sr-71 is the fastest thing on the planet and unfortunately they will all be gone soon
my uncle works in the airforce and hes told me that the air-force has jets capable of achieving speeds over mach 7 but the problem is thats too fast to bomb
Mach 7.... That would be so funny to try to see it bomb something. The bomb would fly like.. half way around the world before it landed. But I don't think anything goes mach 7. lol
it would be lol trying to bomb a tank and instead you end up putting it in orbit lol well the space shuttles travel at 13000 miles an hour and scram jets make it possible to go over mach 7 so maybe it is possible
I highly doubt that. The heat friction over mach 3 is immense. You know the SR71 is just about 1m. shorter when it lands and cools off after having done mach 3.2.
Scientists have problems finding materials even coping with the heat temps over mach 4.7 in suborbital space.
True, but after the metals cool down they expand into it's normal shape. That is how the SR-71 works. If it didn't do that, the metals could begin to crack.
ummm, actually when things cool down they contract, they expand when they heat up, the panels of the sr-71 fit very loosely on the ground and expand to fit in flight when they heat up. Why do you think you put ice on your ankle when you sprain it, the cold contracts the swelling.

you are correct....a friend of mine who used to work for Lockheed as an electronics specialist flew several times in the back seat and told me about flying from denver to la in LESS than 20 minutes...approx 800 nm....did the math...works out to be over 3k an hour...whew..thats hauling....
This video partly misrepresents it as a supersonic interceptor, and A-11 is the incorrect designation whereas the A-12 was the aircraft (thirteen total) used by the CIA, not entirely a prototype. The confusion of numbers was probably for counterintelligence purposes. The photo shows the YF-12 interceptor, a development from the A-12 spyplane model, identified by the ventral fins below the engines and the cone nose, only three were built. These were the design basis for the later SR-71.
"After development and production at the Skunk Works, in Burbank, California, the first A-12 was transferred to Groom Lake test facility, where on 26 April 1962, Lockheed test pilot Lou Schalk took the A-12 on its shakedown flight. The first official flight occurred on 30 April. On its first supersonic flight, in early May 1962, the A-12 reached speeds of Mach 1.1."
Best spyplane who's existence has been reveled to the public.
It started life as interceptor but with the shift from bombers to ICBMs and high speed Russian bombers never materializing it had no mission so it became the SR-71.
The missiles off the YF-12 ended up being reused on the F14 tomcat as the phoenix.
hey u guys have an idea about X-136 ( or F-136 we can say ) i have it on my sim somehow though it's still a project but i can not ride it without using flaps :D i would like to talk about it
yep that one was what i mentioned indeed n e ways finally u got the point though i don't know other crashes but anyways still the habu rules and remains as my fav pşane i have a zippo lighter which has the habu figure on it and i use the sim add on for fs9 i love habu a lot u take care of yourself too
pls correct me but as far as i know there is only one blackbird which is crashed not shot down and it was in 1981 i guess a11 is the previous one of blackbird. Did any of them really get shot down?
Hi. There were 14 A-12, 2 M-21, 3 YF-12, and 32 SR-71 manufactured. None were shot down. However, one A-12 came close(ish) during Black Shield mission BX6734 over North Vietnam in 1967. A post flight inspection of the aircraft found a fragment of metal embedded in the lower right wing. Between 8 to 10 SA-2s were launched at the aircraft during that mission. 'A-11' is simply an attempt at hiding the true designation of the aircraft.
it was in 80's one blackbird crashed i guess it was not the blackbird but one of the previous ones i had watched the video the captain recorded on another plane i guess it was A-12 if i find the video link i will pm u
Ah, I think I misunderstood your comment. Thought you meant that only one aircraft was ever built, lol. Sorry. There were 20 'Blackbird' crashes in total. Most in the 60's/70's, and one in 1989 (an SR-71). I think I know the video you mean. It was an M-21 test launching a D-21 drone. That was in 1966. :-) The video is called 'SR71 Sistership, The MD21 Blackbird Accident.' Take care!
its doubtfull. and more likely they discontinued the project then reworked it and called it somthing else, this happends all the time, many projects will be top secret and unavalible to public
No, the A-12 never made any overflights of the USSR. You're thinking of Frank Powers in a U-2. He spent nearly two years in prison before being exchanged with a Soviet spy.
Francis Gary Powers was his full name. Though he's often referred to as Gary Powers, most called him Frank. Rudolf Abel was the Soviet spy in the exchange.
The A-12 at Palmdale at the blackbird airpark? Similar but different the YF-12 was an experimental interceptor that never made it into full production, you can tell them apart by the lack of chines on the nose.
Lol I just looked this up, it was supposed to say "All weather interceptor" on the speech but he said A11 istead of all. It was about the YF-12, which was a development of the A-12 which later became the SR-71 blackbird.

RemoRa2826 3 years ago
pls correct me but as far as i know there is only one blackbird which is crashed not shot down and it was in 1981 i guess a11 is the previous one of blackbird. Did any of them really get shot down?
RemoRa2826 3 years ago
'A-11' is simply an attempt at hiding the true designation of the aircraft.
stevel666 3 years ago
it was in 80's one blackbird crashed i guess it was not the blackbird but one of the previous ones i had watched the video the captain recorded on another plane i guess it was A-12 if i find the video link i will pm u
RemoRa2826 3 years ago
Ah, I think I misunderstood your comment. Thought you meant that only one aircraft was ever built, lol. Sorry. There were 20 'Blackbird' crashes in total. Most in the 60's/70's, and one in 1989 (an SR-71). I think I know the video you mean. It was an M-21 test launching a D-21 drone. That was in 1966. :-) The video is called 'SR71 Sistership, The MD21 Blackbird Accident.' Take care!
stevel666 3 years ago
its doubtfull. and more likely they discontinued the project then reworked it and called it somthing else, this happends all the time, many projects will be top secret and unavalible to public
wannabeastarrover 3 years ago
They actually did it. It was named SR71 Blackbird.
virel9000 3 years ago 3
they followed it up with the a12 then the sr-71 which was the final version

isnt this the plane that got shot down by the russians? yup thats it,the piolet died and the plane got shot down.
gamefanboy 3 years ago
no pilot got captured and pow for a long time but russia both soviet and new is better than america in everyway
vlad1m1r1 3 years ago
No, the A-12 never made any overflights of the USSR. You're thinking of Frank Powers in a U-2. He spent nearly two years in prison before being exchanged with a Soviet spy.
stevel666 3 years ago 2
I think that was Gary.
Maybe the Russian spy was called Frank? It's a well kept secret that 'Frank' is a common name in Russia.
thesublimemoment 3 years ago
Francis Gary Powers was his full name. Though he's often referred to as Gary Powers, most called him Frank. Rudolf Abel was the Soviet spy in the exchange.

this is the plane that became the sr-71 blackbird
beloon1970 3 years ago
What the hell happened to this plane?.. Did it ever fly or what?...
Nonsequitor415 3 years ago
She was retired as she was not economical. now NASA, does test flights with the left overs.
shararath4u 3 years ago
She was retired because Dick Chaney didn't like the plane, and the SR-71's strongest advocate, General Halloran, was not around this time to stop it!
This would be a viable reconaissance platform if put back into service today!
pacbelt 3 years ago
There are lot of inside stories that we might not be aware of, but SR-71 was a masterpiece, no other place was so beautifully built.
I would love to see them in action again. i hope they fly her in the air shows?
shararath4u 3 years ago
that would be awsome

Aeeeeeee wrong Sebster, 3 x the speed of sound at 767 MPH is 2,301 MPH not 2500 you goober.
redhorse36 3 years ago
i thought it was 714 mph.
IntrepidKartRacer 3 years ago
Speed of sound is determined by both attitude, hence, depending on the attitude above sea level, the actual velocity can vary.
sphinxrising58 3 years ago
3x speed of sound is 2500mph not 2000mph
sebster0105 3 years ago
depends on altitude, temperature, humidity, everything. The speed of sound, when talking about an aircraft, is not an absolute.
ref36guy 3 years ago 2
Point at 0 FT obove sea, mach 3, would be 2500, at 15,000 it might be 1,900
sebster0105 3 years ago
Thats a YF-12 the only one still in existence is at the air force museum at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio, the others crashed.
AdmiralShat 3 years ago
Your Wrong! There is one here in CA desert! saw recently!
MIKIBOB 3 years ago
The A-12 at Palmdale at the blackbird airpark? Similar but different the YF-12 was an experimental interceptor that never made it into full production, you can tell them apart by the lack of chines on the nose.
AdmiralShat 3 years ago
omg we have an sr 71 blackbird(this plane)in our town of hutchinson its one of the two exsisting today

speedgeek123 3 years ago
Lol I just looked this up, it was supposed to say "All weather interceptor" on the speech but he said A11 istead of all. It was about the YF-12, which was a development of the A-12 which later became the SR-71 blackbird.
