  • woah! i only knew the inferior version by The Chocolate Watch Band...this is great

  • This song is written by Alton and DiTosti, but which band were these guys members of? Who recorded it originally?

  • ahhh the first roots of punk ...

  • Trippy goodness

  • The fuzz guitar!!!!!!

  • They are all great versions, is it only me though that can hear "black is black" bassline?

or was this song before said song?

  • @tatunkha

It does sound like it. The riff is a common one, but this just happens to be in the same exact key, is very close to the same tempo.

  • I think this version has the strongest vibe, and bit slower smoldering kind of tempo, like their 'Rari'. Pretty good pop anyway...I guess the Watchband more specialized in the acidic, whereas these guys mostly sang about girls. Maybe they were aiming top 40, and trying to be metaphorical?

  • Watchband's much better.

  • In 1984, THE VIPERS did a wonderful version of this song from "Outta The Nest!" It actually sounded more sixties garage than this version or THE CHOCOLATE WATCH BAND's version. No dissing at all intended. All I am saying is that THE VIPERS were so good at recreating the atmosphere of 1966 & 1967 that it is worth noting...

  • Saw these energetic dudes last night at 229 club , they were ace!

  • Good version but I really love the Watchband's.

  • @monkeeman1966 i think they are both great in their own kind of way i love that they sound different.great bands

  • @DharmaInitiative420 I prefer, or love the Watchband's version, but, if I heard this on the radio I wouldn't turn the dial. lol It's good.

  • @monkeeman1966

Yes. I have to agree. The Chocolate Watchband's version is incredible.

I have it in my collection. That band, CWB, really catches the mood of this song.

Their lead singer, Dave Aguilar, really gets into the songs. He used to do Mick Jagger better than Mick Jagger.

  • cool band, thanks Melanie for sharing this awesome video !

  • I like both versions, Chocolate Watchband is a little more psychedellic.

  • When Dick Dodd arrived in 1966, everything changed in the band.

  • Tremolo is My Medication

  • Feels Good !!

always loved these guys...best of all the60's groups !

  • I disagree. Standells best

  • chocolate watchband best version

  • one of the greatest songs of the 60s. definitely the standells masterpiece!!!
