For spearfishing while scuba diving in MI, do you need the PADI Underwater Hunter Cert. or just a permit? Or both? (I'm 16, doing Rescue Diver soon w/ about 42 dives)
@bimbus111 - I'm not up on the MI laws. I DO know that you can only shoot Carp and maybe Freshwater Drum (but don't quote me on that). I'm unaware of a special Underwater Hunter Certification. I think all you need is a Fishing License - but you should check with the MI DNR (or whoever regulates fishing in your state). You should consider Freediving. It's cheaper, more natural and safer. I can dive deeper than most on scuba. We have a class in WI in July 2012. send me a mess.
@Lambycapo - Maybe 10 lbs if your using a 5mil- If your using a 3mil or no- Prob 6-8 ft. If you are staying shallow. Just have to try different weights to see whats going to work best.
@Lambycapo - Depends on how deep you are diving. If I'm diving 30 ft or less - then I usually wear about 12lbs with my 5mil wetsuit. If I'm going past 30ft (10meters) then I wear about 4 lbs. 30 ft is the magical number where buoyancy is determined. For ME, at 30 feet, I weight 180lbs with a 5 mil wetsuit and 4 lbs of weight, I am completely neutral. If I go less than 30 ft I start to float to the top, If I go past 30 ft I start to sink. hope this helps
I have found, that it DOESN'T matter what suit you have on. It's all the Diver. I have a dive buddy that wears a BLACK suit and his "down time" is double what mine is and he always gets more fish than me. He's also a really good shot! Movement while underwater scares fish, i don't care what suit you are wearing.
Cool. Thanks for replying. I don't actually fish myself...well, I haven't for years at least...but spear fishing intrigues me quite a bit. I live in Michigan and I'm in the process of checking the laws on where and when it can be done. I wouldn't mind giving it a try!!!
I know a guy who FREEDIVES over in Michigan and i believe he told me he can only Spear: Carp and Suckers but I'm not 100% sure on that. I haven't gone Regular Fishing since I started this.
and then when you kill them before they lay down the eggs....? 10 years and there will be no more salmon.... please think in the future.
atleast me... i´m 17 from spain and since 2 years i spearfish and i want to teach it my children when im old, cause the mix of hunting under water and seeing beautiful things is just priceless.
sZeRo0Xx - the Salmon are put in this lake every year. Very few can actually spawn and reproduce in this lake. PLUS- IF they ever let us spear salmon - I seriously doubt it would be more than a couple a year. IF THAT.
You can, It's very legal. The only thing you need to watch is with PERCH - they have a smaller limit and a season- Otherwise it's the same regulations as if you were fishing in a lake in WI. You probably won't see many people do it up here in WI- not as popular as somewhere coastal. I kinda wish we could spear Salmon- even if it were 5 a year. It would be extremely difficult but alot of fun!
we cannot shoot Salmon or trout- but we are talking about Lobbing to see if they will let us spear salmon- since it would be really hard and they are not native.
Cool video...I'm from the Michigan side of the lake. What kind of fish are you allowed to spear? I saw a video where a guy shot a perch I'm just wondering if thats legal there. It would be fun to spearfish some salmon or steelhead.
We can spear all Panfish (bluegills, Crappies, PERCH-only 5-, Rock Bass, Yellow Bass, White Bass) and we can shoot all ROUGHFISH (Carp, Gar, Freshwater Drum, Gizzard Shad, Bullheads)

I am just curious...do you find that you are more successful when using the camouflaged wet suit?? Have you ever tried it in just a black wet suit??
Cool videos, by the way!!

I would like to get back up to Sheboygan and check out the power plant. I'm thinking alot of fish would hand out there when the water temp drops.

what gun are you using?
CDAspearfisher 3 years ago
In this video I'm using a " JBL Sawed-off Woody " - I prefer a thinner shafted/euro style gun - The one I use now is a HammerHead Evolution 75cm

I have a 3 mil suit with no head thing and was wondering how warm it has to be to swim with one? without freezing
josef2424 4 years ago
I would say you would need at least 70 Degree water. But if you did have a hood of some sort you would be able to stay in the water longer.
