It's an act. Straight men don't want to be seen as gay. They don't want others to think they are watching a naked man and enjoying it. In a shower it's different. They are there to get clean, not to look. But in a movie theater the whole reason to be there is to look. So they freak out because they want the people around them to know they are not gay. It's all image. If they were alone they would not react at all. In fact, they may well enjoy the sight a little, but never in public.
It's North American sense of "decency". Why do you get huge billboards with topless wrestlers only if those wrestlers have no nipples on the photo? (oh Photoshop, world would be so nipply without you) Why do you have to wear absurd swimming shorts and speedos are a no-no? Because North America (at least US) accepts pretty much anything, as long as it's not public in any way. Cinemas are public places, locker rooms are not. Get rid of your fake modesty, decency, you name it and you're golden. ;-)
It's a bit sill really. North America is so up tight about it. I've never noticed that the wrestlers didn't have nipples in the posters, ha. XD Thanks for your comment. :)
You can see simmilar things in Europe to. About guys not having much trouble seeing other guys naked in locker rooms or showers but don't like male nudity in, say movies. Although it sounds worse over at your place.
I think maybe if you don't show dislike to male nudity in a movie when everyone else is, you could easily be seen as you like it: They think you are gay. While people don't usualy have problems with homosexuality, they don't want peolpe to think that YOU are. especialy if you aren't.
