I don't think that cats have the cognitive abilities to differentiate between people. Humans juxtapose their emotions on cats, giving them a range of emotions, including "love" that they most likely don't feel.

This dog does deserve sympathy for the fact that's it's allowing an aggressive animal to attack it without it defending itself.
