I graduated in '89, and was there when Egbert was transformed. One of the biggest changes was the bookstore moving from the Towers to its new location. It's hard to believe it's been more than 20 years. It stays in my mind as being new. Same thing with the Park Center. The Class of '89 was the last TV/R class in Dillingham, and would never experience the Park Center. Now it too has been fixture on campus for two decades. Unbelievable.
Yes-- I'd get a kick outta seeing those photos I spent so much time on. If you ever use those old photos of the Union I took that you found, please send me a link.
Also-- do you edit these video's? If you use a mac, as I do, I could send you a cool (and free!) morphing software. It adds an extra nice effect if you were to morphe from an old still to a current still. Lemme know-- And keep up the good work!
@VideoJeff65 That sounds really cool! Glad to talk to another college historian. Do you know what happened to those photographs? I wish I had added them to this video, but these were the bulk of the photos we had in the archives.
I was a Student Manager in 1986 and 1987 when the biggest rennovations were done adding the whole Emerson Suites section. I remember when the new sections first opened including the snack bar and new campus pub on the lower level. It was a pretty amazing transformation!
It's always odd to think of how the things students take for granted were once new and exciting. I remember the first time I learned that the Campus Center wasn't just one continuous building. I always wish I could travel back in time and see what the campus looked like in the times that I make these videos about. It would certainly make visualizing the location of certain photographs easier!
I took 2 years worth of Before & After photographs every week for the (then) Egbert Union while under construction in 1985-87. Roger Eslinger, the Director of the student union, purchased "bricks" of 35mm black & white film for me each semester. One of my Egbert Union photos became the front cover to the student handbook for '87-88. I was a film student and 1 of 3 AV Managers my senior year in 1986-87. I worked there since Fall of 1984 & have fond memories of the building and it's staff.
@VideoJeff65 I have an update for you: I just paid a visit to the archives, and we think we've found the photographs. They are in black and white and color and feature many shots of the Egbert Union building and the progress of the construction of Phillips Hall. I don't think these have been digitized yet, or I would have found them for this video!
